South Korea got dismantled by Brazil, but what was more interesting was how good Japan looked on the field except for penalties. Those were weak penalties that Japan shot except for the one that scored... The players looked super nervous... Cruel way to exit, but they played well in this tournament!

Hi,

I kinda wondered if Japan actually thought that they would have to take a game into overtime, and then into penalties. I imagine that we can say that the Japanese players were not prepared to take penalties, or (likely) ever thought they would have to take one!

It is a cruel way to go, but Croatia showed how well they have been in so many competitions for some time ... and even the penalties didn't bother them.

The Brazil game, was over quickly, sadly enough, but Brazil came ready to play and to make sure that their game could flourish, and it did ... it's a wow game in this WC. Specially when you got to see 4 different players score ... that is not only impressive, it is scary!

Hoping for a Morocco win today. I believe they've got a real chance against Spain today.

Hi,

Spain did not score a penalty ... Morocco scored 3 of them!

Another penalty scene of incredible proportions!

Spain's players looked horribly nervous during penalties. I'm always amazed that a professional footballer at this level can't just put the ball in the top corner where the keeper has no chance. It's always a yard inside the post on the ground, that gives the keeper a 50:50 chance.

For the kind of football Spain is playing you need creative geniuses, the likes of Iniesta and Xavi. Germany took on the Spanish approach and had the likes of Ozil, Kroos, Mueller, Schweinsteiger, Klose, Hummels in their best form in 2014, who could pull it off as well. Since then both Spain and Germany try their WC recipe again and again but the players are not up for it, so it fails. At least Germany isn't quite as boring as they have some creativity but lost the ability to control, which makes for some entertaining but often losing football. Spain have control most of the time but lack the ideas.

I agree on six of these but think that Japan and Switzerland will make it through. The USA have a good chance but... just not.

Underestimated Portugal, overestimated Spain & Switzerland (too influenced by the Euros where Spain and Switzerland were great and Portugal not so much).

Great that we have still an African team with Morocco. In fact I have loved Moroccan football for a very long time but in the past they mostly went for attacking football with a sloppy defense. Now the only goal they conceded was an own goal (even including a penalty shootout!!!). That's quite something. I give Portugal more than 50% against them but it'll be interesting.

OK; let's go for the quarters
winners
NL - Arg
Braz - Cro
Fra - Eng
Mor - Port

not taking much chances - safe bet, but I went 7-1 last stage.

Yeah, Portugal looked great against Switzerland. That header goal, blew me away.
However, my heart is with Brazil and Argentina.

Can't help think how important Roman Saiss is to Morocco although must admit I didn't see the game. The reason I say that is that he left my club at the end of last season and we have been terrible since. I would make him one of the most underrated defenders in the world.

Portugal were fantastic although the Swiss chose totally the wrong tactics going for a back 3 system and leaving midfield too empty. Southgate beware!

Only Brazil are a safe bet in that lot! IMO

Netherlands have to be 'Dark Horses' with no pressure on them and a fantastically experienced coach in Van Gaal. France I believe are only slight favourites against a good England team. Morocco will not collapse the way Switzerland did and could be tricky although admittedly Portugal certainly won't mind not having to play Spain!

Hi,

So many studies have been made about penalties and they all say the same thing ... the shots that are the hardest to stop as the high ones on each corner ... and that is the part of the penalties that is least studied and tried ... kudos to Gareth Bale to rip one for Wales against the USA, but in looking at many of the other penalties taken, that were seen online ... the bad results made the tactics and abilities show up real quick. The one study I just read, somewhere on the ESPN site, was that the shots to the upper corners are a better than 80% chance of scoring. And everyone goes for the bad fakes and stupid little pauses, half of which fail!

Lastly, the bad/worst side of it is the guessing side of it all ... bizarre that at this high level, you can not have a better focus than guessing which is a 50/50 thing, and likely more like a 30/70 thing, specially when you have moved left before the ball even got touched and on the way to the right. I would say that this is the side of the penalty thing that is worked on the least. If you can take the guess out, I bet you can stop at least half the penalties! But too many keepers are just size, not intelligence per se. The best of them, are not exactly guessers!

Hard to argue with that. Nothing in football can be taken for granted, but I'd have picked the same four. In fact I expect most of these to be tight, except that Croatia are past their prime and Brazil should have the easiest task here. The thing with Morocco is their top defence, not such an easy job for Portugal, but they are harder to predict than Spain.

The keepers aren't guessing, they have the data on all the penalty takers tendencies on them. Last Euro's England's keeper had it taped to a water bottle, it's in a sock or somewhere.
