I know this will sound redundant, but yes, my favorite movie of his is "Citizen Kane" but I'd say I'd rather watch a 2-hour interview, as opposed to a random 2-hour movie of his.

The man was a maverick, and if it meant one less movie, oh well. An artist shouldn't be a salesman, although Orson said movie-making was "90% hustle, 10% film-making". The false modesty gets annoying, but there's some really good stuff out there, including the BBC Sketches he did on Hollywood, Police, Travel, etc.. which I'll include later if this thread gets going.

Of his films, my favorite is the one that is not as well known, and probably deserves some better appreciation. The film takes the pulp that was so much Shakespeare, and creates a complete story about Sir Falstaff through at least 2 plays, and the whole thing is fantastic, and has in it many things that eventually we even saw several film makers copy ... and the ending, is one for the ages. Luis Bunuel had a similar ending, but this one was special, and you end up throwing a tear just as fast.

I don't dislike CK or a lot of the other films, but while some of them are good, and interesting, I never thought that the "spunk" that CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT had was not more valuable than a lot of different things out there. His problems with various names in the business are legendary ... but then, he could finger them all ... he is remembered, and they aren't!

Admittedly, I've never seen an Orson Welles movie, but I do remember him introducing a memorable Moonlighting episode: The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice, just three weeks before he passed away. Broken Heart

Certainly one of the great artists of the 20th cen.

For me his finest moment was Halloween 1938 with the Mercury.  To actually create an alien invasion in real time and make it completely legit in the minds of thousands...  Fantastic~

Hi,

Start with CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT ... and then see CITIZEN KANE. That one film with Charlton Heston ... something about Evil ... is also worthy. Not sure about many of the other films ... But these three are probably his most fascinating.

I wish I had a recording of his original "War of the Worlds" broadcast ... which went on to create some rules for radio (and then TV) that are still in place today ... well ... Mr. T not withstanding, of course! Confused

I would like to give a shoutout to the last movie he acted in, "Malpertuis" by Belgian director Harry Kümel. Welles played Cassavius, a bedridden and extremely wealthy man. he steals every scene he is in.

another shoutout has to be given to the exceptional performance of Susan Hampshire, who plays three different leads in the movie (Nancy, Alice and Euryale). she does it so well (with the help of wigs and sophisticated make-up) that you don't realize these three very different characters are played by the same woman until you see the credits at the end
