The World Cup starts in 4 days! Who is looking forward to it?Big smile

Will Brazil win for the 6th time or will Messi win Argentina their 3rd tournament or will a black horse like Denmark win it all? Embarrassed

Feel free to discuss!

I'm not looking forward to it... This World Cup is a real shame and I think I'm gonna boycott it. Quatar should have never gotten the right to organize it in the first place, beacuse it is too small a country and the event had to be moved from June/July to Nov/Dec because of terrible climate (they said they would have been able to ogranize it in usual dates but they lied)... They spent a lot money on bribes to get it and building of the infrastructure cost the lives of many labourers from poor countries who had to work in awful conditions. Not to mention that Quatar is an autocratic country with opressive laws (towards LGBT e.g.), so...

Sorry to spoil the fun.

Fair enough.. I was anticipating this to being posted. Mind you, other World Cups were also held in countries where the policies of their governments are not agreed by everyone either...Confused..... I won't name them, because that'll start a political discussion here...

I don't want this thread to become like another one of those Progarchives political threads like the ones we have seen on Ukraine.....

I'm not very excited either, I'm sure I'll get excited once the games start, I'm not that excited about England prospects either. It's hard to get past the politics and human rights issues.

It's a shame that Turkey (my country) and Italy (my favourite foreign national football team) are out. It was quite normal that Turkey couldn't qualify but we had great chance to attend this year! And Italy... It was a major surprise.

Among the teams that participate this year's World Cup, I'll be supporting; Argentina, Mexico, Denmark, Croatia, and Serbia.

Argentina looks like a great team this time around! Denmark are IMO the real dark horses. They have a complete team. Just not a great bench...

I can't get excited about it at all... to be honest, we still have Division One, Two and the National Leagues playing over here and I'm more likely to watch out for FC Hereford's results than England's..

I’m looking forward to it and I’m sure going to hope that England do something in this tournament.

I've just noticed, you've beaten Scotland 2-1 in a friendly, and one of our centre backs, Mr Soyuncu, who has been out with a calf injury for nearly two months has mysteriously just put in a 90 minute shift for you tonight... Confused meanwhile one of our ex-players, Under, scored your winner... Clap

Qatar? No thanks, boycotting that. I'm following RL, RU and cricket anyway, the three sports I prefer much more over football.

Nice memory!

Edit: Oh, this is a recent thing. I've just realised that. I didn't know about this match!

We were almost gonna eliminate Portugal and afterwards we could've pretty easily joined this World Cup. It was a really sad and dramatic loss against Ronaldo's team...

Another one here on my high horse. The award of the tournament to this country was a disgrace, and the wearing of rainbow armbands to “show solidarity” don’t cut the mustard in Lazland.

Desperately ironic that Sepp Blather has came out and stated that it was a mistake to stage it in Qatar.

I'm actually pleased to have a break from the domestic football season as my team (Wolves) are not doing great. Also it's just another excuse to go down the pub for a drink.

Putting my serious hat , England have a real chance. the squad is chocked full of experience and quality and Southgate has realised that only major tournaments matter. In a sense we have adopted a more German like mentality in that regards. The group is deceptively tricky though as England have never performed well against Wales and USA and struggle to overcome minows like Iran. However this is good time of year for England players who won't be exhausted from a long PL season as normally happens. Hopeful.

Him & Platini should've gone to jail on more than one occasion for all the crap they've done in the last 30 years

===============

I also can get excited about this WC, but nothing to do with Qatar (though that certainly doesn't help), neither does the time of the year). I've stopped believing a while ago that Belgium's golden generation will ever win anything.

==================

I'm a little surprised that everyone states South American teams as winner, when clearly in the last 5 cups, it's all been Europa.

Are they the football commentators saying that? I don't have any guesses, BTW.

I've seen Argentina beating Italy 3-0 in the Cup of Champions and they were fantastic. Way better than any European national team I've seen in the last few years. Of course that's just one game so you never know, but if they play like this they could well make it.

Personally I'm torn - I love football and WCs are usually great for me, but giving it to Qatar has tainted it a lot for me and the Nov/Dec period is also worse for me workwise than the usual timing. So chances are I'll watch something here and there but not remotely as much as normally.

Looking at your squad, it's still incredibly strong, but you get the feeling it's now or never. We have four Belgians in our first team who have hauled us out of the mess we recently found ourselves in; three are of course in your squad. I hope Wout Faes gets a game; he was a snip for £15m and has been superb for us of late... seems to have boundless energy and gets his body behind just about everything.
