The idea for this thread is to be shameless. Songs that you emidietly, inwards "shouts" "THIS IS THE GREATEST SONG EVER" and it does not happen to be the greates song. But it just fires all your parameters of greatness/ egnites all your cyllinders. It can be a comercial song / a short song or long song, which emidietly sparks nostalgia/ or a feeling of this is it.
I got that feeling with mamy songs/singles of the 60s Like the Kinks super nostalgia song "Waterloo Sunsett" that is a song that just gets my brain and heart to egnite. You emidetly understand, this is songwriting perfection, or "Good Vibration" by Beach Boys, is such a song if played in the local bar/pub, i emidietly stopp any conversation im in, it stops me in my action. And i emidietly enters a reactin to the song. Becouse it is a masterpiece. But this rule does not need to be a 60s song, but the sensational feeling (for me) is stronger for one reason regarding 60s dittys. The cataclyst for this thread title is Simon and Garfunkles (mostly Simon) "A Hazy Shade of Winter", which is also magnificaly covered by thr Bangles, whom is equaly gets the erousing feeling in me when its played in Stranger Things, season 1, episode2. That song is a stroke of genius. A highligte onn an already quality filled album. I love the richness and playfull instrumentation. But the heavy rock cover by the Bangles are eaualy effective both groups known for amazing vocal harmonies. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bnZdlhUDEJo Edited by Icarium - November 14 2022 at 08:18 |

Most of the song writing exemplefied in A Hazy Shade of Winter, makes me inspired. It is a composition which have so mamy details, which i I puts highly in my parameter. The short snappy and intricate starts and stops whenever the courus begins. There is a lot of song within its short runtime. It is packed with both meaningful lyrics and cool oboe breaks.

I got boosted for listening to this song by Just JP whom have had a run through with Bookends, i love the albul previously to hes discovery of it. But i am also able to put myself in the shoes of a firsttime listeners energy and curiosity. Listening to songs you allready are familiar with through the "lence" of a "first time reactioner". Makes me appreciete songs on an even more estranged way. I am actualy able to hear things with new perspectives.

Hi,
I'll stick with Purple Haze. I also wanted to include Janis and her "Me and Bobby McGee" which was stupendous. One of those wake up calls about what music means, and if you have the stomach, get the long cut on the other side of the LP ... it's a massive blow out and then some!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Just ONE and only one single, solitary composition??? As others have mentioned, that's just way too difficult! I've boiled this topic down to SEVEN (7) possibilities:
Two album-length tracks: Anthony Phillips's "Slow Dance" and Mike Oldfield's "Amarok" (both from 1990). One side-long track: Mike Rutherford's "Smallcreep's Day" (1980). Two Yes songs: "Hold On" (1983) and "Parallels" (1977). One masterpiece from the "Great Amercian Songbook": Bernstein/Comden/Green's "Some Other Time". One that should be far-better known: Eric Woolfson's "Don't Let the Moment Pass" (as sung by Marti Webb). EDIT: How could I forget Jane Monheit's stupendous cover of "Over the Rainbow"?

^ oh it does not need to be only "one" can be any song that emidietly causes yo to think, "this is neat".
Imagin, one sitts at a place were music is played, a cafe, a beer place, student bar, songs that you in any other situation might deem overplayed, tired songs. But suddenly the familiar sounds of the guitar strumming in the speaker, anounces the presence of "Stairway to heaven" (just an example), the unprepared ears reaction to something like that, is pretty interesting. Oppessite to when one puts on music by own choise, you are then more prepaired, and the listening becomes more prepaired, oppesite to being unprepaired for songs suddenly being played when you least expect it to (from a playlist made by the bar perhaps). That experience is quite different, suddenly the intricate neatness of a song like f.eks "Stairway to Heaven" or the amazing guitar riff that introduces "A Hazy Shade of Winter" or any other song realy, which comes from masters of songwriters. For me, "Bennie and the Jets" would satisfy all of the parameters of the OP.
