I have just now discovered this powerful album, probably may favourite album of this year. I consider this album to be a piece of philosophical and artistical experience in the purest way. New wave and synth music is to me one of the most preplexing genres when i keep digging in in the 80s rabbit cave and realise there is so much treassure to discover. Every song carries strong harmonies and cold chiling instrumentation. Produced by Trevor Horn and gusting Steve Howe, this album is topped to the edges with artistery.
Is this the best new wave album of the 80? The first song is a kneffing 9 minuts epic https://open.spotify.com/album/3gPehgpPd4KsNfxJk1t4BJ?si=qG5dIX4ZQGOg6bPt0u3nOQ&utm_source=copy-link Edited by Icarium - November 07 2022 at 14:56 |

Ooh yeah. Been a fan of this album forever. That first track is a doozy!

I saw the film clip for "Dr. Mabuse" when it was first released and immediately got the album "A Secret Wish". The first track "Dream Within a Dream" is still my favorite track from the album. That track is a poem by Edgar Alan Poe put to music, and as such reminds me of "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" by The Alan Parsons Project.
David Sylvian also plays keyboard on "P-Machinery". There is a remix album of tracks from "A Secret Wish" called "Wishful Thinking" that is also worth a listen. Edited by Hugh Manatee - November 07 2022 at 18:23 |

Agreed! Also a top album from the 80s/1985--one that I consider to be progressive rock music (just as we all assume Yes' 90125 is a prog album).

I've had a proper gander through my Synth Pop CD collection and the magnificent debut by Propaganda still remains one of my favourites.

I don't rate it quite as high as some apparently do, but it's a good album and P-machinery is a monster of a track. I also love Duel.

If you think "A Secret Wish" doesn't get enough attention, their second studio release is even more obscure. After Claudia Bracken left the band they were joined by Derek Forbes and Brian McGee (both from Simple Minds) and released "1234" which was completely ignored by the music buying public. For me this is a bit of a shame as I consider it well worth a listen (despite a rather ordinary album cover). |

1234 is very different, but I enjoy it too - though not nearly as much as A Secret Wish & Wishful Thinking.

Indeed, although I wouldn't say it's up there with "A Secret Wish" or "Wishful Thinking" I still think it doesn't deserve to be as completely ignored as it was.

Has long been one of my favourite albums from the 80's although not surprising as there is quite a lot of prog clout on this with the likes of Steve Howe, Ian Mosley and Trevor Horn involved. It might be the perfect meeting of prog and punk in some respects.
Heard Duel on the radio back in the day and it was a wtf was that moment. Immediately tracked down the album. Not a bad track in sight although as pointed Dream Within A Dream is the prog nugget. Other tracks like p.Machinery take us into a German industrial landscape that normally I'm not in to but it all works incredibly well.
