In the years 1975-88, cassettes were my main medium, and most of them also recorded by myself from vinyl source. In 1988, when I became an audiophile and decided only to play LPs from then on, I gave all my cassettes (about 100) to a friend. But today, I wish that I kept them as a memory and to know exactly which albums I listened to in those years, and especially in the 70's.

I became audiophile in 76, when I broke my piggy bank (13 at the time and delivering the Toronto Star) and bought a Yamaha CR-1010 and a YP-4B with Hitachi speakers - to which I added a Mitsubishi tape deck some 18 months later.
Before 76, I'd bought +/- 100 albums (from spring of 74 onwards) which I played on my dad's 3-in1 Phillips "hi-fi" (it had the regular 43 cm width) - but there was a conflict about sharing.
My dad was supportive of my acquiring a "real hi-fi" and was impressed by the sonics, but he never bought a real c hain, sticking mostly with those all-in-one Phillips system (he had four of them in his lifetime). If I'd not crossed the pond, I'd probably still own that Yamagha chain (I know it still exists & works in a cottage around North Bay)

===============

Always thought that pre-recorded cassettes sounded crap (apparently the magnetic tapes were recycled and erased from computer tapes) and were of poor quality: I bought a few of them (Seger, Foreigner, Boston, Journey, Styx & stuff) and quickly lost them all inside tape decks (both hi-fi, portable players and car decks).

Cassettes were not a good solution, but they allowed for portability (walkman or ghetto blasters and cardecks), but even the XL-IIS was never as good as vinyl or CD.

Cassette decks were quite hot stuff in the mid-70s, when I got one. I enjoyed also borrowing LPs from libraries and recording those I was fond of. Actually in my "cassette-years", borrowing LPs from libraries and listening to them was not least the way I got acquainted with new-to-me music, and I enjoyed much this way to do it.

Only when I used type IV tapes did I thinkt they sounded as good as my records. When I dubbed CDs to type IV those sounded pretty darn good!
I still have all those tapes as well cassette albums, my tape deck died 20yrs ago.....I've been thinking about buying a deck again but if you want something really good they are spendy.

I already have a reel to reel deck that is killer sounding, but blank tape for it is expensive.....but I love it!

My order of the four coloured vinyl by Church Of The Cosmic Skull arrived this morning. But I’ll have to wait to giving them a spin till tonight or most likely tomorrow.

I just got Voivod's Nothingface, the original German vinyl release from 1989. An expensive matter, 78 Euros incl. shipment,
but in M-/M- condition, and I got it cheaper than the average price online (Discogs). Something else is that I for
the time being find very little of albums I want to add to my collection, so I still spend only little money on that.
The recording and mixing of this album is digital, and the sound quality is rather horrible, and thus a good example
of the typical sound quality of the digitally recorded and mixed albums in the 80's - at least as I've experienced
it for the most.
Still, I'm surely fond of having got it, even the artwork horrifies me a bit as well - at the same time, I find it
to be very creative and one of the very best from the 80's.

But anyway, I surely find the sound on Nothingface to have its own attractiveness and special character , while many prices
online for used vinyl have got completely mad, and at the same time, the prices for shipment have increased very much. Unhappy

Glad you got something you wanted, that's the key. If you look around pretty much any prog pre 1990s is pricey, especially on LP. IIRC the bulk of the top collected or wanted albums on Discogs are prog in nature and carry hefty prices, especially originals.
Any record store owner I have spoken to will proclaim the highest prices he gets for albums are the 70-80s prog records. The value of those records supersedes the sound quality...

CAN~Ege Bamyasi is one of my holy grail to find an original German pressing in NM condition or better...but that will run me $500-$1K.

I think that the prices for used vinyl in the street shops follow the online prices, and have increased much too, but maybe not so much everywhere.

Well all prices of used records have increased......I remember 10yrs ago paying $4-5 bucks for used records. I bought a NM Genesis~The Lamb for $8, they go for $25 for VG and NM are $40 today.
You have to hunt for deals, they exist. I focus on used record stores that mainly are into metal, punk any prog they get is usually priced really well.

When talking about productions in the 80's, I've seen with quite a lot of mainstream Rock, say Born in the USA, that the pure analog ones were not so good either when compared to the 70's, and not least concerning sound quality of drums.
I wonder how come, the usage of limiters? Or maybe just other sound preferences in the age of Synth Pop?

^Depends on what you listened to. The Phil Collins gated drum sounds were in style.

Yet the drums on... Allan Holdsworth, Pat Metheny, Rush, Dixie Dregs, Chick Corea Elektric Band, and others sounded superb to my ears.

This specific album was mastered by Bob Ludwig at Masterdisk who is easily one of the most respected mastering engineers ever. Anything with "RL" in the deadwax is highly desirable as well high values.

I'm going to guess you might have a version that is not RL stamped.......

This is the 2015 Analogue Productions reissue remastered by James Guthrie. This is probably the only solo album I can tolerate by Waters. Somewhere in a box I have the cassette from 1992......Have always read how amazing this version sounds.
I can attest all that hype is spot on! This album sound quality is spectacular, it will test your analog setup, if your setup is off you won't hear the benefits of the mix and the 3D effects. That QSound really gives a surround sound experience, it's more evident on this record than it is on Pulse.
