Arrival (2016): This was politically like The Arrival (1996), in that the Americans politically are the good guys and there are antagonised countries. In The Arrival, Mexico was giving shelter to the malign aliens; and in here, Russia and China (among others) are behaving in a way that doesn't please the good (?) Americans. How typical... Anyway, this was a very good movie; excellent entertainment, really. Even if I don't like the political aspects of such American movies, there's some plausibility in their reflection. At least, the Americans see the world like this. I respect that, eventually. 8.5/10
Dark Skies (2013): Another alien movie, but this time the beings are familiar: the Grey aliens! A fine film, though nothing spectacular. 7/10 Dream House (2011): Back to reality... Or does the perception of the protagonist reflect the actual reality? A decent mystery/thriller. Not a standout film, nonetheless. 6.5/10 |

The Beatles Get Back Documentary 6/10 Wow, took three nights to get through this 8hr film. While I acknowledge that it was whittled down from the 60 hrs of footage that was shot, I truly believe it could have been parred down to 4 hrs without loosing any of the interest or importance of the event. If you're inclined to sit through hour after hour of tedious rehearsals and mundane conversations, have at're. |

Everything, Everywhere, All At Once (2022) Wildly inventive, a bit silly and deeply profound...just watch it! 10/10 Edited by Hugh Manatee - September 12 2022 at 17:38 |

^ Agreed, it's my film of the century thus far. It's brilliant.
Watched Thor: Love and Thunder the other night. Pretty good and some funny bits here and there. It sort of fizzled out at the end but enjoyable overall nonetheless. Some nice cameos too - I'll give it 7/10

Tenet (2020)
finally got to watch this and boy what a mess it is. Totally unintelligible plot about objects/people that can become time inverted (wtf) and then Kenneth Brannagh turns up as the total cliche of all cliches a Russian oligarch up to no good. Even funnier director Christopher Nolan lifts part of the plot for the BBC series The Night Manager and installed the same lead actor Elizabeth Debicki playing more or less the same role. I found it difficult to take seriously at all and the big set pieces very underwhelming. Maybe it's time for Christopher to go back to writing with his brother Jonathan 4/10

I agree on Tenet being a mess. Nolan is either brilliant (Memento, Interstellar) or very poor (Tenet, Inception even Dunkirk).
I'm watching Top Gun: Maverick this afternoon - hopefully good.

I actually liked Dunkirk a lot, found Memento baffling but enjoyable for me possibly because of the Noir-ish approach . My favourite may be Insomnia , a remake of a Norwegian film (With Stellan Skarsgaard) staring Al Pacino and Robin Williams. I was underwhelmed by Inception but didn't hate it while being a fan of sci-fi helped a lot with Interstellar probably.

Just got round to watching Top Gun: Maverick. The flying scenes are spectacular and quite incredibly done. The rest of the movie is pretty average though - then again I think it was supposed to be like that: gung-ho fly-boys disobeying direct orders whilst the hero gets the rewards (and his gal) - eugh. As my old man used to say "as far-fetched as a bucket of s**t from China". Tom Cruise is good though. 7/10

Elvis Despite a heartfelt depiction of Elvis Presley by Austin Butler, this flamboyant bio is more glaring fantasy than compelling reality, and that's a shame. The music, so central to the story, is not respected or given optimum treatment, the pace & editing is frantic and disconnected, and Tom Hanks' performance as manager Tom Parker is so ridiculous as to make us wish Hanks had had other things to do when he was offered this part. Not recommended, and there are better Elvis films. |

Sidney 2022
An important documentary film about the late great black actor Sidney Poitier. He blazed a trail for the likes of Denzil Washington and Morgan Freeman, they and others contribute their thoughts to this excellent film produced by Oprah Winfrey and also featuring contributions from the man himself before he died. it told me a lot that I didn't know , for instance he was born in the Bahamas and had six children. By 1967-68 he was one of the top film actors, equally popular with white and black audiences at a time of massive social change in America. Later he became a film director almost by accident and directed the 1980 comedy hit Stir Crazy that starred Richard Prior and Gene Wilder. Certainly worth a look. 8/10

Que la fête commence... (1975 - France): The IMDb users say that the story here is historically correct. The Bretons (or a couple of them) versus the French. Guess who won. Lol. It was a good movie. Good directing, good acting, and an engaging storyline. Not a striking or outstandingly impressive film, though. 8/10
Ne le dis à personne (2006 - France/UK): It has a very impressive scenario, very complex. A bit convulated but it is probably because the past events were unfolded somewhat hastily at times. Truly convincing acting is seen throughout. Some cool action scenes, the most prominent one being the protagonist being chased by the police. A must-see flick for the people who are into action-packed crime/mystery/thriller stuff. 8.5/10 The Empty Man (2020 - US/South Africa): Well, kinda generic American horror with some of its qualities, but the cultic aspect adds to it a lot of mystery and intrigue. This had been done before for sure, but this movie did it like stupendously. Some movies crossed my mind like The Candyman (a horror figure that you summon), Pickman's Muse (the cultic element) while watching it, but this movie stands on its own with many of its qualities; at least I haven't seen any movie that is too alike. I think what happens there can happen in real life (at least it is not impossible for me), which makes the movie different from many of the ridiculous supernatural horror flicks. It is a really powerful movie, so if you get scared while watching (some) horror films, you had better think twice before deciding on watching this one. 9/10 |

Seems like everyone either loves or hates "Everything, Everywhere, All At Once"... I'll keep my eye out for it, and if I see it, I'll check it out. I'm running out of movies, and I'm even trying to watch movies I couldn't finish in the past, like "El Topo" (I gave it a few minutes today, but... I'll try something else first)

The Greatest Beer Run Ever 2022
Do we need another film about the Vietnam conflict? As a Brit I've never been that invested in the subject. The only 'Nam' film I've watched all the way through before this one was Apocalypse Now. I've seen bits of the Deer Hunter and Full Metal Jacket but that's it pretty much. Based on a true story this is set in 1967 and focuses on a chap called John ''Chickie'' Donohue who leaves New York to track down his army buddies in Vietnam. His idea is to take them a beer and thank them for their service. He has no idea though of the total chaos he is about to be confronted with. Its quite watchable and does have a few proper gritty moments but if you are looking for something like those afore mentioned moves then forget it. However Zac Efron does a great job playing the main character while able support is provided by film legends Bill Murray and Russell Crowe. 7/10

Thor: Love and Thunder 2021
Pretty much ticks all the boxes for this type of film. Just under 2 hours and mostly kept light with lots of humour despite a cancer sub plot. There is a decent baddie (played well by Christian Bale) who actually has a good point - why not kill all the gods if you can? What have they ever done for us? 7/10

Snake in the Monkey's Shadow In the context of old-school 1970s chopsocky flicks ~ the grainy,
twitching, slightly yellowed picture; vaguely period settings with people
wearing yi-fus; two young pupils (or old masters) insisting their style
of gongfu is best; and an incomprehensible mash of ambiguous wushu ~
this one from '79 is just about exactly what you want and expect. |

A movie last night. Day Shift with Jamie Foxx about a modern day vampire hunter in LA. The story is typical Hollywood garbage and the script isn't much better. But these serve only to showcase the tremendous effects, particularly in the fight and chase scenes. I read that many of the vampires were played by out of work circus performers (to give them work during covid) and you can see how well this translates into the packed action sequences with some mind-blowing contortions. In the car chase scenes drones are you to embellish the filming that I've never seen before and it certainly adds another dimension to these stunts (though I think it will become common place in time). Story 2/10, effects and action 10/10, so an average of 6/10

Raymond & Ray 2022
starring Ethan Hawke and Ewan McGregor as half brothers who together make the trip to their estranged father's funeral. I expected it to be a road movie but actually it's much more about the funeral. I won't say too much for fear of giving away too much but it's a bittersweet comedy, quite light and easy to watch. A scene involving the coffin, the grave and McGregor's character is priceless in itself and worth the price of admission alone. Apple TV+ are building quite a nice roster of films currently. 7/10

Snake in the Eagle's Shadow Jackie Chan's 1978 film just before Drunken Master is an archetype of classic kung fu cinema as he learns Snake style from an ancient hobo and uses it to teach the bullies of Eagle style a thing or two about which form is superior. Still developing his slapstick approach, Chan is good but hasn't quite arrived yet, his breakout film to be released later the same year. Yuen Siu-tien, a legend in Hong Kong cinema (and the director's father), is brilliant as the old man. |

The 36th Chamber of Shaolin Regarded as one of the greatest kungfu action films ever made, this 1978 landmark in Hong Kong cinema was a sophisticated take on the legend of San Te, a student rebel who used martial arts to fight the ruling Manchu. When his fellow pupils are murdered by the royal family, the young disciple hungers for fighting skills at a Shaolin temple in order to seek revenge. |
