Who are some of your favourite contemporary/modern/ current female music artists, especially ones who will play, sing, write/ compose their music? And please mention any favourite albums and or songs focusing on music from the the 2010s until now.
Some of my favourites are: Anna von Hausswolff Julia Holter Lingua Ignota (aka Kristin Hayter) (thanks to Sap...). Uboa (aka Xandra Metcalfe) YAYA Kim With Anna von H., I like all of her albums, but have been fixated on Dead Magic the last few days. The Miraculous and Ceremony are both terrific too (as well as live music). With Julia Holter, Aviary is my favourite now. Have You in my Wilderness is the album that first hooked me. Lingua Ignota: I like all of hers, but despite the screams, Caligula is the one that really wowed and enthralled me. that said, hearing Sinner Get Ready made me an instant fan that wanted to hear more. Uboa has similarities to Lingua Ignota, but one will find some similarities with all of these. At this time I favour The Sky May Be over The Origin of My Depression. YAYA Kim. Really like very long with 33 tracks album of this year, a.k.a YAYA Here is a track from each that I love: This past decade until now has been such a great time in music -- the decline of music has been greatly exaggerated imo. Please share your favourites. Edited by Logan - August 16 2022 at 00:09 |

For me Susanne Sundfor is the best female artist around at the moment. This song is from a few years ago, she must be due another album soon.

I like what I know of Hanne Hukkelberg, although I don't know her most contemporary stuff. I love most Laura Veirs' albums although she is already around for long; what counts as contemporary? At least she has a 2022 album. Barbara Morgenstern is in the top league for me together with Kate Bush and Björk, and top league means on a par with the very best bands. Her most recent album is from 2018 though.

Thanks, there are a few mentioned by others that I also have really liked, some of which I found on my own and others through people's posts at this forum (like in the post a youtube video thread or interactive polls...). I have listened to and liked Chelsea Wolfe's Abyss album, Susanne Sundfor is great (been a while since I last listened to her). Weyes Blood I had heard music from before (love the track posted), and I liked what I had heard of Juana Molina and and Kahdja Bonet. One of my children exposed me to Billy Eilish thinking I would like it (big name, and I liked the music). Barbara Morgenstern I had heard and liked Laura Veirs. As for what counts as "contemporary/modern/current" as I put it in the OP, that is open to interpretation and I'll leave that up to you. As long as you think the artist has been creating original music from 2010 up that is relevant, fresh, still with it and hip with today's hep cats maybe, then I'm okay with it as long as we are focusing on the more recent music. I do think of, say Kate Bush and even Bjork as more classic artists. I was thinking mostly of one's though that found their greatest success in 2010 up even if they have been around longer music career-wise.
By the way, I really love that Jorja Chalmers. I like Sylvaine a lot too! Thanks all. This is the YAYA Kim song I brought up for potential nomination in the latest Interactive Poll (just beautiful I think). Providence of Providence Edited by Logan - August 16 2022 at 18:14 |

I haven't gotten around to listen to YAYA Kim yet, but will. Marissa Nadler is another great artist, and of course Kit Sebastian (with Merve Erdem) |

From those mentioned I very much like Anna von Hausswolff and Julia Holter, the last album of Lingua Ignota, and what I've heard of Susanne Sundfør and Weyes Blood was good too. Artists who, I think, deserve to be mentioned are: Hildur Guðnadóttir, not very prolific as a solo artist, but she is in many collaborations that I like too. She doesn't sing, but especially plays the cello and some electronic thingies. Agnes Obel; I must admit that I don't have any album of her, yet, but that might change because everything I hear from her has that magic enchanting side - a kind of nordic dream pop. Anna Calvi; to put some pepper in things. Great singer (what a voice!)/songwriter and a wonderful performer. And she did a reprise of another wonderful song of hers with... German violinist, Johanna Burnheart makes music at the point where modal jazz and techno meet. Mopo is an instrumental trio from Helsinki; it was formed by jazz musician and composer, Linda Fredriksson (sax, clarinet, flute). The trio draws their inspiration from jazz and 70s punk. Fredriksson is persuing several music projects and is doing some solo work as well. I was considering both acts for the current Interactive Poll but due to the release date they were unfortunatelly not eligible. Btw. I can highly recommend our polls, they are great! It's about all kinds of music styles that you can share and discuss (see 'general music discussions' section). Edited by Mila-13 - August 18 2022 at 04:35 |

Speaking of the Interactive Polls, I suggested a recent track by S.G. Goodman there and she's one of my current favorite female singer/songwriters. Definitely rooted in Americana, country, blurs. Outstanding voice. From her 2020 debut.

Surprisingly, I like Weyes Blood too. I have two of her albums on CD, so we do share something in common musically after all.

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

For psychedelic, Rosalie Cunningham. Her two solo albums are quite good. Also fronted Purson.

I like many of the artists mentioned, especially Julia Holter and Anna von Hausswolff, but need to add
Cicada (pianist/composer Jesy Chiang has led her band of fellow Taiwanese chamber rockers in over six studio album releases since 2009, several of which have earned places in my Year-End Top 20s and one of which, 2015's Light Shining Through Sea, earned my Album of the Year title.) Demen (her 2018 debut album, Nektyr, has become one of my Top 50 all-time favorites) Hands of the Heron (their 2021 debut, 13 Moons, came in at #4 on my Year-End Album of the Year list) Infinien (I"ve loved all of their albums and hope/wish they'd come out with something new) Hannah and the Moulettes (led by the supremely talented singer & multi-instrumentalist, Hannah Moule) Five-Storey Ensemble's Olga Podgaiskaya (genius composer, singer, pianist for Rational Diet and Five-Storey Ensemble has created some of the 21st Century's most beautiful, interesting and refreshing music.) Wish I had samples to share with all of you but my ancient computer will not allow it. |

My latest interest is Jenny Hval, especially for her album Blood Bitch (2016) (thematically involves vampires and menstruation, which pretty much sums up all of classic Prog, not).
Here's some of her music: From her 2022 release: Such a strong time for time for female artists (composer-musicians-singers-producers). |
