 The Black Phone (2021)

share-call

I've just finished watching this one. One of the better horror films of the recent years, I think. Lots of things in the movie didn't make sense to me, howbeit I tend to watch the movies that are cinematically impressive but logically frivolous as if I'm having a dream/nightmare; now that this is a horror flick, it is the latter in this case.

Paradox (2016)

para2-orig

A low-budget sci-fi with a high entertainment value. The second part literally dragged me into the movie's world. There were subpar scenes here and there, but broadly speaking, this film was very well done. Imaginative works pertaining to the theme of time travel are a real treat for me, if intriguingly done; and I'm exceedingly glad that this flick was one of them. 8/10

Tenet (2020)

This was really good. It has an intriguing plot, very good cast, excellent directing and truly superb utilisation of music. I wanna emphasise the use of the music, as the rhythmically driven tunes really were configured masterfully here which proportions the tension and designates the pace of the movie. Nolan redeemed himself with this movie for me, given that I had colossally been disappointed with his Batmans and Inception.

The Grey Man 2022

Directed by the Russo brothers and starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans. An espionage thing, involving a covert CIA cell that seems to be imploding with agents killing each other to cover its own path. Well I think that's the plot but quite honestly it doesn't matter. Its fast paced and lots of sets pieces. Virtually no character development and Gosling phones in his performance or otherwise forgets that he's not playing an android anymore. Chris Evans is very good though and just about lifts it above the mire. A generous 6/10 maybe.

The Mule 2018

Clint Eastwood directs and also acts in what is probably his last film. He plays an 80+ who has badly let down his family over the years by being absent and gets one last chance to make amends, taking a job running drugs across state lines (as you do). Apparently loosely inspired or based on a true story so I shouldn't be too cynical.
Eastwood is as watchable as ever and its hits some satisfying emotional notes. Bradley Cooper is also very good as a DEA agent who finds he can learn a thing or two from Eastwood's character. Worth your time. 8/10

I've dumped Netflix but before doing that watched these movies

Kate 2021

Set in Osaka and starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead as 'Kate', this is for fans of John Wick. Lots of balletic Kung Fu inspired fight sequences. Kate is an assassin for the CIA (her handler is played by Woody Harrelson who seems like he would rather be anywhere else than in this film) who is poisoned by the Yakuza in revenge for her taking out one of their high ranking people. She then decides to take them on single handed and a great deal of mayhem ensues. Turn off brain and enjoy stuff 7/10

The Power Of The Dog 2022

A Jane Campion directed western starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst . Well you know how westerns tend to be slow, well this is virtually going backwards. Normally there is great scenery to make up for it but there is precious little of that even. 2 hours later and something sort of happens but it's so underplayed it would be easy to completely miss it. Cumberbatch is good, the cast is good and its all okay. Fans of the genre with enjoy probably but High Noon it aint! 6/10

Rogue Agent 2022

Thank god for a well made British made movie. Inspired by a true story. James Norton plays a con man pretending to be an agent for MI5, somewhat ironic as he has been often linked with the now vacant role of James Bond. Just to keep the connection, ex Bond girl Gemma Arterton also stars. Norton character is particularly vile ,allbeit well hidden by his looks and charming manner. I enjoyed this a lot, well told story and excellent acting. One up for the Brits! 8/10

I very much enjoyed "TeneT also. A little convoluted for some tastes I would imagine, but I do like a movie that leaves me pondering. As with "Inception" Nolan seemingly has a desire to include big set pieces in his movies at times, that although part of the plot could be considered unnecessary but that is a minor quibble in the scheme of things. Btw, the title is a palindrome Wink. 9.5/10

^ As I recall, progaardvark gave Tenet a 7/10; me an 8/10 and you a 9.5/10. All are fine by me. I could have given any of these ratings in different periods of my time.

The Black Phone - A horror/thriller set in 1978 follows the story of child abductions by 'The Grabber' and focuses on one boy involved in the crimes. The feel of 1978 is captured brilliantly (much better than the 80s of Stranger Things). The two main child actors really are superb. One scene in particular of the little girl being 'belted' by her father is just so realistic and disturbing. Ethan Hawke exudes evilness and is great in the role. A definite recommendation - 9/10

Jurassic World: Dominion. More of those roaring dinosaurs (did dinos really roar - doubt it?), It's long and I had low expectations after the lacklustre reviews, but it's actually quite good. I mean how can you mess up with CGI dinosaurs? It looks spectacular on an OLED TV in HDR10 and the spirited story keeps the momentum throughout. Laura Dern, Sam Neil and Jeff Goldum are back too, which is nice. 7/10

Anyone seen Prey yet? Apparently it's a prequel to the original Predator film. I'm thinking of subscribing to Disney+ and this might be a reason although I'm a bit torn between that and Paramount+.

Moonfall 2022

Written and directed by Independence Day's Roland Emmerich , it does what it says on the tin. The moon has moved out of orbit and is heading for earth. The reason? Well it's a seriously barmy plot and very much a 'Friday night film', large helpings of popcorn required. Nice to see Game Of Thrones John Bradley in a significant role , he gels well with Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson. 7/10

Fourth of July - 7.5/10
Best American movie I've seen since "There Will Be Blood".. Well done, Louis CK... It's been out since July 1st, yet only 500 ratings on IMDB. That's the way it is, I guess.

Prey. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11866324/ A Predator origin story set in 1719 Comanche country. It's not overlong and pretty much what you'd expect, but it is very well done. It's quite a slow build up, but the last 30 minutes of battle is spectacular with some original, well-enacted scenes. Overall an enjoyable action/horror movie and a great addition to the Predator series 9/10

Nope https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10954984/ Jordan Peele directs and Daniel Kaluuya stars. From those 2, you can probably have an idea what to expect. But it's crap. There is not one redeeming feature of this film. Daniel Kaluuya mumbles his way through and the actress playing his sister is the most annoying ever. There is a ridiculous side story about a chimp that goes berserk on an old TV show and has absolutely nothing to do with the plot. Also a wild west show run by Steven Yeun that also has little bearing on the main storyline. The story itself is ridiculous and if you do suffer all the way through, you'll be gobsmacked at the 'monster' - it's just all too silly and terribly told. And the title 'Nope' - no idea unless it's because it's the most used word in the script. Honestly don't bother - awful. 1/10

Night Hunter 2018

watched this on Amazon when I keen to watch something not too long. This is about 1 hour 40 minutes long but could probably have been shorter. It's a serial killer thing and stars Henry Cavill , Ben Kingsley and Stanley Tucci. Cavill is woefully miscast as a cop while Kingsley plays a retired judge who likes to hunt paedophiles and surgically remove their testicles (yes seriously!). Tucci plays the only credible character as a police chief and just about manages to anchor this nonsense. It does have an obligatory twist that all thrillers of this ilk seem to need. I didn't guess it so that's something I suppose. Passes the time 5/10

The Ruins (2008)

The-Ruins-2008-DVD-Cover

An OK movie. The actors really tried too hard to be convincing. However, the presumably "horrific" aspect of the film was rather comedic for me; it has many disturbing as well as ridiculous scenes.

6/10

El buque maldito (1974)

MV5-BMTM0-NTYx-Mj-Ez-M15-BMl5-Ban-Bn-Xk-Ft-ZTcw-Mj-U0-Nz-Yz-MQ-V1

I really loved this film. The pace was easy to go along with, as a viewer. The ambient sounds and the music added a lot to the atmosphere. The skeletal monsters were impressive. But come on, those wooden sarcophagi should have floated; it was ludicrous that they sank like iron chests.

7/10

Day For Night - 5/10
This movie has been up my sleeve for years. I've tried to see it before, wasn't into it -- movie within a movie. I had it automatically recorded from TCM, but this time I finished the movie, but there wasn't anything I liked about it. I wasn't attracted to either girlfriend/leading lady (as actresses, too), and think the better and more attractive (by far) were Nathalie Baye and Nike Arrighi, who had minor roles.

I think I'm "done" with Truffaut. Seems like his best movies were his first two. JPL hit it with "400 Blows", and liked him in the Kaurismaki hit-man movie, but I think I've seen enough.

I Came By 2022

Just landed on Netflix and starring Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) and Kelly Macdonald (Line of Duty). Good to see a solid well made British thriller. The idea is that a retired judge has his house broken into by a graffiti artist/terrorist who discovers something in the basement he may not like. The problem with thrillers is that often the characters make stupid decisions in order to advance the plot. For the most part that doesn't happen here and its well nailed down. Nothing stunningly original but good to be reminded what an excellent actor Bonneville is when removed from the comfort zone of period drama! 7/10

Recently watched "October Sky" (1999) based on a true story of a young American adolescent boy who experiences the birth of the space age with the launch of Sputnik, and decides he wants to "build a rocket", much to the chagrin of his coal mining father, as the family lived in Coalwood, a small American mining town in the mid 1950s. It is a touching and moving story as this lead character develops his interest in rocketry with his hero being Werner von Braun. At the end of the story, after some technical and social trial and error, he and his rocket building friends win a science contest and get scholarships and finally, the boy's father comes around and accepts things. Then the boy tells the father that he is his "real  hero". I found this story quite touching, and give it 9/10.
