If I remember right Nimzowitsch once threw a bishop at an opponent.

I played a bit through my high school days, but certainly don't know all the rules. So what is, and/or is not, allowed in the context of distracting your opponent during a game. clearly touching pieces is out of the question, what about the board it self? could you drum your fingers on the edge in front of you? Can you scream, sing, belch or juggle your opponent into submission?

It's not as impressive as it may sound. That Bishop was Pontian the Puny. He was slight enough that the impact barely even distracted Nimzowitsch's adversary. Now if he had thrown a much more sizable Bishop like Ambrose the Obese at the opponent, then it would be more likely that they would have been playing Squash.

Touching pieces is not disallowed actually (as long as you say 'J'adoube' before) but anything that generates noise is never tolerated.
