Mila: I still have difficulties to get into this black midi album apparently everybody is raving about. (Seems I'm not alone here at least.) On the other hand some time ago a friend sent me some older Brandt Brauer Frick stuff and I was immediately sold on it. Not disappointed at all by their 2022 music. The Adigery and Pupul one is big fun, very original. I like the Lalalar track, too, but its fun factor is somewhat lower. OK I realise I should score Chassol not black midi. I like this but just a tiny little bit less than the others. Or maybe even as much but it gets rated down because of late nomination, who knows? Getting toward the end.
Christian: Some intriguing and varied pieces of music that I liked. Hard for me to pick a favorite. Depends on what I am in the mood for. I first dismissed Laura Veirs but it has crept in. So Sner is captivating listen through the headphones. Had Red Snapper as an early favorite. I like the industrial soundscape of Lucy. This one was hard for me to rank. Due to work this week, I’ve not really had the time to properly listen to the tracks I’ve not yet ranked. I apologise for my tardiness (especially as this is “my” poll), and will endeavour to catch up tomorrow. I think I am the only one to not have ranked everything yet, so once I’ve done so, I guess we can probably open up the voting?

You are absolutely not the only one, and I will once more emphasise that for me always slower is better, particularly for a task like this where there is much stuff to listen to. There is zero hardly any chance for me to finish by tomorrow. Of course it's your poll, I'm not asking everyone to wait for me, but you're apparently yourself now in a situation in which you can well understand that there's something to say for patience.

Well, at least I try. Greg: Strong symphonic/classical elements in all these, which I like. Ultimately this is all great music, but Current 93 is let down by the voice. I had checked out two Yaya Kim tracks earlier and wasn't quite convinced, but the one you picked is just wonderful. Kees: Yeah, you know what I like. Actually (as you may guess) I'm not a big Big Big Train fan but respect to them, this is an enjoyable listen. It doesn't reach the class of the other three though. Not a lot between them really. I think I surprise myself and give Mondkopf the third rank; I'm for sure up for this kind of stuff, but I'm a flimsy voter and today I'm more in the mood for Lisa LeBlanc fun (maybe because I'm so happy I can still understand some French lyrics). And then I'm always up for a well done straight instrumental so Yokai is really up my alley. Still I know Mondkopf could well win this for me on another day. Personally, I have always thought these polls too rushed, so I’m more than happy to not go to the voting stage yet. I’m just aware in the past that some people have been rather impatient (at least, as far as I’m concerned. Obviously I run on a slower timetable to them, and don’t understand the need to rush through these polls. So long as others are happy to not go to voting yet, then I am very happy to leave it open. I’d be quite happy it there was only one poll a month, rather than one every couple of weeks, I very often feel like I’m rushed, and that’s why I don’t always participate. |

Thanks so much guys. There has often been such a rush in the past (or so it has seemed to me) to get through the poll. It sometimes seems to me that a poll has barely begun before someone has posted about speeding things along so the next one can be started. I’ve never understood the need to get to the next one, when people are still active in the present one. It’s really neat to see that you guys are on the same page as me, here. So yes, no rush! No rush at all! I can’t help but think of the Medici motto (because the album I’ve been listening to most recently is Rise of the Medici, by Imaginærium.

It doesn't bother me if this goes on considerably longer. This kind of poll can be more demanding. I liked the idea of having timeframes so they worked a little more like clockwork with set deadlines from the beginning, but mostly because we had a lot of participants early on who might have wanted a turn to make a poll, and it can be nice not to wait months to do so. I didn't see a problem with two polls overlapping with activity, nor with having polls which don't have very many participants. I'm very on and off with these polls anyway.

Here we have two gentle
folky ballads with female vocals, whereof one with a medieval music flavour to
it incl. the use of traditional musical instruments such as the Scandinavian key harp. Then
we have two rock tracks, an atmospheric art/post rock and a mid-tempo alt rock one.
They are all enjoyable in their own way. So, in order to do justice to the
musical diversity of your offerings I will give the higher votes to my
favourites of each category. 5pts Midlake 3pts Ana Alcaide 2 pts Returned to the
Earth 1pts Mary Fahl Greg's choices An interesting and
modern selection that also reflects your preference for atmospheric music. In
terms of genre Perfume Genius and Yaya Kim’s songs are similar to some extent imo, also in mood. So
it’s not easy to decide between the two. I’m familiar with both artists but
Yaya is less known and her music features this exotic extra element. The dream pop tune by Melody’s
Echo Chamber, on the other hand brings in this typical French summery lightness.
This balances the melancholic and mysterious mood of the previous two tracks very
nicely. Current 93 is certainly an interesting band but the track that you have
chosen I find less convincing. So here is my final ranking: 5pts Yaya Kim 3pts Melody’s Echo
Chamber 2pts Perfume Genius 1pt Current 93 Lorenzo's choices Some Sanremo vibe in PA,
a fun surprise! The live-performance videos would convey the atmosphere even better imo. Like it or not, but it’s the oldest pop music contest in Europe
(since 1951) and the most talked about event in Italy. Numerous Italian artists
known today have participated at least once, be it only as composers. - I did
watch the show – it’s an old family tradition – so I already had my favourites: 5pts Elisa 3pts Mahmood & Blanco 2pts Irama 1 pt Achille Lauro I liked Mahmood’s ‘Soldi’ from 2019 a lot. I think that Mahmood's Soldi was Better than Brividi. And you are right,It Is an innovative entry but I Guess there was even a political orientement of the jury that helped Mahmood tò win. Anyway I like Soldi so and so ( I cant stand that kind of singing,not Mahmood as Person). I dont like Brividi. And I was Surprised It won. But this year the qualità of the songs of the festival was very low. Usuually I like 2 or 3 songs per Festival,this year I didnt like none. (…continued) Me and my big mouth - “there is one track yet to come, but whatever it is will have to be good to displace…” It wasn’t just one track to come, because with black midi out of contention there were two more, and yes, they were good. And good enough to displace. So what I hoped would be easy is not at all. I pretty much like all four equally, but I think I’m inclined to interpolate the two pairs, old and new, in an attempt at “fairness”. I do probably like the Brandt Brauer Frick best, I think, so that can have the top spot - but really there is nothing between the remaining three at all. I really like Chassol’s take on the Morricone, and am surprised by how much. This soundtracks a particularly tension filled and tragic scene, and the original score portrays this wonderfully. All tension and tragedy is lost in this warm and jazzy rendition, and I feel like I ought to dislike it - but I actually really love it. I’m not at all worried by what has been “lost” in this rendition, so much as luxuriating in what has been added. No, I lie. There is one thing lost, which I wish could have been kept.
