My 2 cents. I enjoyed the last poll and the format, but agree the format takes up time and limits participation. It's okay to have once in a while, but having two polls in row is too much.

As for the current theme, I like it but would have to think and check what actually was 2022 release and not 2021. Much new music I have gotten is more well known, but do have a few lesser known favorites.

I didn't take part in the last poll, but I enjoy this one, found it easy to come up with ones (but my tastes have never been more modern/ recent than now) and ranking others is easier than when I would comment on all of the songs. I had the same idea before to make it more interactive for all, but thought it might be a burden to too many. Then I thought maybe I would make it optional.

It wasn't nearly as easy as I thought it might be, as it took multiple listens before I even felt somewhat comfortable suggesting an order for Nickie's songs (one favourite of the bunch is easier, but that can be tough too, as is the final vote tough often). If it's moved down to three, which I don't expect Nick to do so, then I would remove my Current 93 (I liked having Current 93 as it is a "current" poll). While I like to try to respect and honour the OP's wishes, maybe it could be open to people who wish to mention less, and perhaps who say that they won't have time to rank other's songs. Then those who did not rank others songs could be in the poll as a bonus "un certain regard" vote.

I like the poll as is very much, but can understand why it would make it too difficult do some and limit participation (the last poll did better than I would have expected -- with this as just 2022, that might limit things more -- I love the idea of a really modern poll).

@Greg, this is awesome! I'm sure your effort payed off. Music can go a long way, it increases our vital energy. I've seen your recent threads about the albums of the last two decades. I was on vacation and couldn't join in but I'm very interested in what you're doing. Keep it up!

@Kees, the voting system consisted of a preliminary and a final vote. I was referring to both.- I'm always in favour of trying new things but running such a time-consuming voting system twice in a row is too much. It affects the number of participants, also in view of potential new people btw.

I have no interest or intention in changing my poll, and will be leaving it as is. I have never made a poll to attract new people to the interactive polls, nor am I worried if people don’t want to take part in my polls.

I find it is a lot easier and less time consuming to rank four videos, than write about them, I probably wouldn’t have been able to take part in the last poll if it were a more “normal” interactive poll.

The “complaintsl about the last interactive poll (if you can really call them complaints) were not about the ranking of videos, so much as it being limited to ‘70s music, and to prog - when so many of the people who take part in interactive polls are often not greatly interested in older music, as they are into exploring newer sounds - and very often sounds that are not that prog, or not prog at all.

I loved the last poll, for the differences, and while I can appreciate the changes recommended, the whole point of this poll was to replicate the last, but for modern music and not restricted to prog. If you don’t want to take part, that is fine. I won’t be offended. I will try and post my videos on Sunday (as it is my first day off work since returning from holiday, and so pretty much the first time I will have time).

^ Oh really? You can also draw conclusions from an experiment, you know. The number of participants has been decreasing for some time now.

The series is rather long-in-the-tooth now even though it still has plenty of life in it and I think it will continue to do so for a very long time (at times it will be busier than others). Enthusiasm about topics often wanes over time, such as "What is Prog?", "Which is better, Genesis or Yes?", "Has PA lost its way?" and "Who is hotter, Geddy Lee or Steve Howe?" The answer was always too hot to handle. Forum participation and active membership has been quite steadily declining for years. Come summer it is often less busy methinks.

I'm really enjoying this current poll about current music (not the AC/DC kind of current). Numbers of participants don't matter much to me, and actually I tend to favour smaller more intimate gatherings IRL (which includes smaller venues for music performances).

I am a romantic when it comes to music by the way, music is life, music is love. It is my joy. Vive les polls interactifs.

Well said, Greg.  And yes, the polls were created pretty much right in line with the epidemic, so people had more time originally, as well.

Summer and also Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year seasons all see slow-downs in many forums, at shows chats, etc.

And, just like winning doesn't matter as much to me as sharing, the numbers are also not too important to me. As long as there are enough to make it interesting, and I get to hear some new-to-me music, and get to know what others enjoy, that is what I'm here for.

Do you like Steely Dan?

if you're interested, here's to you my review of Aja.

I hate that album... and I like it!

Excellent review, and you really caught the nuances of their comment on society of that time.  I worked out of The Village Recorder for a time, where they did much of the recording (Donald Fagen had a permanent office/studio there, when I worked there).

Here is a link to an amusing story about Aja, and their perfectionism.  Near the end, you'll see a photo of the second engineer, Lenise Bent, with a fun anecdote about working with them on this very recording.  The story was legend at The Village.  Smile

I think the next poll is Mila's. From Switzerland with fury!

Premise: Mila can organized it as she sees fit,

however

I think we should open a discussion on the rules to give to the next polls, because lately the poll scheme has changed, and it has become more demanding, and I don't know if it can go on like this.

I don’t believe any discussion is necessary. Some polls may be more “demanding” than others, but if any one poll is too “demanding” for any one person at any one time, they can sit it out.

I absolutely love Greg’s poll premise, and the only reason I’ve been unable to participate, is because I have simply not had time. But I absolutely have every intention of providing my decades as soon as I do have time - even if the poll is “officially” over. The point for me of the polls is the fun and enjoyment I get from the topics, and the discussion that arises. I don’t really care about rating and voting, and these are incidental to me.

As for “demanding”, that is always going to be very subjective. I find it less “demanding” to have limits put on me, than for something to be too open. So, for example, I would probably never have cared much for the very first Interactive Polls, which seem to be just to put forward a non-prog piece that one enjoys. That sort of broad and open, and near limitless, premise is far more “demanding” to me, than being asked to share something more specific (relatively speaking, because I’ve not yet seen a poll that is still broad and open to a degree - just within a narrower scope).

I find, for example, Greg’s polls to be some of the most interesting and enjoyable. He clearly puts a lot of thought into his polls, and it shows. For some people they might seem more “demanding”, but for me they tend to be the least “demanding”.

TL;DR - Why discuss? Polls are fine as they are. Too “demanding”? Sit it out.

Why discuss? Because that's what forums are for! Tongue
In principle, I agree with you, Nick, but I wouldn't mind if the next poll would be a bit less time consuming (especially now my listening time is mainly limited to the weekends). It would probably draw more participants (and the more there are, more time consuming it will become again), which will lead to more exchanges than when there are less participants. I've liked all poll themes and concepts so far, and since I joined I never skipped one, but I wouldn't hesitate to do so if the theme is too "off" for me or if it would be too time consuming at that moment.
Some "regulars" have not been participating now (probably for different reasons) and it would be nice to have them on board again...
