That old chestnut.  The big six are those who dominated their contemporaneous charts while transcending the genre, so...

Pink Floyd
Genesis
Yes
ELP
King Crimson
Jethro Tull

I love Embryo, and own most of their albums. But there were literally hundreds (maybe even thousands considering their "world-approach" was quite modest up until their 1973-release We Keep On) of jazz artists  ahead of them in that department. Sun Ra, Yusef Lateef, Sabu Martinez mm... started fusing jazz with all kinds of music from all over the world in the late 1950's (and Les Baxter before them, really). Ever heard Ahmed Abdul-Malik's albums Jazz Sahara (1958) or East Meets West (1959)?

Jethro Tull
Le Orme
Gentle Giant
Camel
Oblivion Express
Van Der Graaf

I always forget a band lol
I have Yes just outside my 10 and Genesis just in
Pink Floyd probably 20
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

That’s an impressive number of LPs (big CDs, as my niece once said). It is so cool to see all those Big 6 album covers. Also, it makes me miss going into the store and seeing LPs, where each one was a real work of art.

My list would round off a Big 10 with Rush, Kansas, Sky, and UK.

Are any of those 4 bands in your Top 100? I’m pretty sure I know the answer to at least one.

Rush and Kansas are definitely Top 10 bands for me!!!

UK is Top 50 (only two albums...)

And Sky is cool but I'd rank them a little lower.

I did a Top 100 Prog Bands series on my YouTube channel (over five episodes a couple weeks back.)

Thank you!

Not sure if I ever commented on this earlier, but:

Genesis
King Crimson
Rush
Pink Floyd
Jethro Tull
Yes

Gentle Giant and Moody Blues would be very close runner-ups Smile

Won't you take me down, to the underground
Why oh why, there is no light

King Crimson
Yes
Genesis
Pink Floyd
Emerson Lake & Palmer
Gentle Giant

That's the run-down for me.

So, these bands are the Big Six of prog rock, in my view:

Yes
Genesis
King Crimson
Rush (most successful out of the Big Six during their prog phase and they had a wider appeal than other bands probably due to hard rock roots/elements)
ELP
Jethro Tull

I would not include Rush since they were not part of the original English wave of prog (I don't like leaving them out myself but to me it makes sense since they were influenced by the other bands). So I would have it as:

Yes
Genesis
ELP
King Crimson
Jethro Tull
Pink Floyd

If PF should be omitted due to not being prog enough then I would put in Gentle Giant instead. Wink

As for Paul's list it's weird to me that IQ would be included but not Marillion (or even Porcupine Tree for that matter).
Totally agree with your "Big Six", although my personal preference would be to substitute Camel for Jethro Tull, and on the subject of Marillion and Porcupine Tree, at least they came top of the PA poll in a list of favourite modern prog bands.  Thumbs Up

I would argue for the bands whose presence and popularity led to the creation of the term "prog" and "progressive rock" and not for a definition or list that is based on how we now choose to define the term, 50+ years later; i.e. the bands that lent themselves to the phenomenon of "stadium rock."
ELP
Jethro Tull
Pink Floyd
Yes
and, eventually, the Kings of the Heap,
Genesis and Rush.

Neither King Crimson or Van Der Graaf Generator could ever sell tickets in numbers like the above six.
