Hey all - I've been lurking on the forum for some time but haven't posted yet.  I've gotten some great exposure to artists/bands here...so thank you all for your contributions!

Wondering if y'all can recommend any other artists that are similar to Subsignal/Sieges Even?  Subsignal is probably my favorite modern prog-ish band of the last ten years and really dig thoughtful, melodic, somewhat spiritual/melancholic/whistful styles of writing.  Not hugely into long songs/instrumentals.  I'm familiar with all the really popular "prog" artists newish (Steve Wilson/Porcupine) critics darlings so really looking more into the obscure kind of stuff.

Thanks for any recommendations!

Both Cristi and I love both Subsignal & later SE and he's made a reasonable effort at directing you toward other bands, but ultimately, their sound is unique and there is nothing that will quite fit the bill.

You might like to try a US band, Hourglass?

hey gents - thanks to you both - i will definitely check some of those new names out there.  and, Jared, i concur: nobody (yet) quite hits the mark for me in this admittedly wide open genre as Subsignal does.  their very best songs are as good in all pop regardless of genre as any that i generally consider faves (from The Church to Iron Maiden to Depeche Mode).

Riverside is the only one mentioned that i'm familiar with...so have some digging to do!  cheers!

In the field of AOR / neo-progressive rock:

-The albums of Mystery (Canada).

-Cryptic Vision: Moments Of Clarity.

-Cyril (Germany).

That’s definitely a good list, and I would have recommended half a dozen of those myself, if Cristi hadn’t already.

Perhaps also some Votum and Wolverine?

Again, they are roughly there or there abouts aren't they? I enjoy Wolverine in particular and there's no reason the OP wouldn't either, but my brain doesn't seem to draw a direct line between the two... Ermm

Either way, I really do think Subsignal should be removed from PA's Neo-Prog label, I've always found that rather improbable... Smile

I agree, they should be under progressive metal.

Your brain likely can’t draw a direct line, simply because there isn’t one. The closet direct line one can draw from Subsignal is to, well, Sieges Even. As you’ve said somewhere above, nothing else really fits the bill. So my suggestions (and, therefore, presumably Cristi’s also, since he came up with several I would have, too) are more of a “if you like this, you’ll probably like this” than “if you like this, this also sounds like it”. 🤷🏻‍♂️

And yes, another vote here for Subsignal being moved from Neo to Metal. 👍🏻

yes, i agree that Subsignal is pretty "light" prog by my esteem.  i just don't fee like i'm listening to a prog band when i listen to them...i think it's their very conventional/straightforward sense of melody in the vocal phrasings despite the, at times, very proggy percussion structures.

all, thanks for your thoughtful suggestions and insights - extremely helpful and brings out the music nerd in me to obsesses about a relatively obscure band like Subsignal!  not unlike my countless hours gushing over the The Church on boards 25 years ago!

Drifting Sun, maybe? They are darker, but they are also catchy, you may like them:

ok so i really like that Blind Ego album - thanks @ Cristi!  one listen and i dug it - that's a sure sign of a good album.  haven't gotten around to anything else yet but will, guys.  forgot to add - another "obscure" prog-metal band that i do like quite a bit if that helps - Circus Maximus.  two or three really good albums from those guys.

CM can't be described as obscure round these parts! If you like them, try (probably in this order) Dark Water, Seventh Wonder, Anubis Gate, Beyond Twilight, Pagan's Mind, Pantommind, Mind's Eye (A Gentleman's Hurricane).... Cool

Ha, true!  Yes, not obscure I guess in this little nook of the world.  Have some of those bands you mentioned but others I will have to check out thanks !

From what I've heard of Subsignal, and from your OP, I'd like to suggest Sky Architect and Lazuli. You might like them, although it is further away from prog metal, but there is some heaviness in their sound...

The razamataz is a pain in the bum

I'm totally good with less heavy stuff...it's the strong melodies and complicated structures without being overly clinical that make SubS really compelling.  Will add those to my (long and growing!) list of new bands!

I love Sky Architect so much! They are such a great band, and absolutely incredible to see live, if you get the chance. I’d definitely agree with Kees about giving them a go. Very different from the other bands recommended, but I can understand why Kees has recommended them, and I’m almost kicking myself that I didn’t. 😄🤪

Lazuli, I also love, but I definitely wouldn’t have thought of them, in terms of a recommendation. I guess because, even though they do have a different sound, in particular down to the unique instrumentation, in my mind I equate them to a whole heap of French bands that exist on the periphery of prog metal (eg Nemo).

This whole thread, with the varied recommendations, has been a really interesting read, as it’s quite cool to see how people try and come up with bands “similar” to Subsignal. 😄🤪

I have to say this thread has been an interesting read for me too, as I often move seamlessly between Subsignal - Sieges Even - Riverside - Indukti - Anathema - Wolverine - Porcupine Tree but rarely venture much beyond these bands, before I head back toward Neo or Symph for a while.

My initial problem is the sizeable and growing listening pile I still have to negotiate... Embarrassed

But believe me, this thread has been duly noted... Approve
