I'm familiar with three titles here, I can't vote. Maybe I need to watch a few of these.

^ Ditto. They certainly live up to the 'cult' status as I've seen precisely one from the list. Abstained.

Gosh, Paul, you do what you want, but when you want to compile a list of cult films compiled by one guy who clearly doesn't know what "cult films" are about, you really do expose your ignorance about cinema. I've seen 9 of these 12 films and most of them are just bad films (not even B films, but at best C films...) and not, definitely not "cult" films. I know that your obsession about lists and rankings and ratings is stronger than you and that you don't give a damn about definitions that generally guide some of our understanding of categories, but here you are just adopting someone else's ignorance about cinema. Do what you want, but please don't consider this is about cinema. This is just about ignorance. EDIT: BTW, I love Goldfinger, as I love most of the James Bond films, but none of them can be reasonably considered "cult".

I have only seen two of these that I recall, which are The Ipcress File, which was I thought quite a well-known, fairly mainstream and respected espionage film and the the extremely well-known and hugely respected Goldfinger from one of the most successful movie franchises of all. I guess one could call James Bond fans, of which I am one, a sort of cult, but then it's a massive cult. When it comes to cult films, often not only does it have a very loyal following, which can be quite sizable, but often there is seen to be something transgressive about the film and anti-mainstream (sometimes things that were quite mainstream are considered cult classics later due to the loyal followings).
Those two choices, especially Goldfinger, do make this listing dubious to me as cult films. In the 80s I a had a book on cult film which I loved, which included things like The Wicker Man, Basket Case, The First Nudie Musical, Sleeper I think, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Eraserhead maybe. Not spy drama, but for a Sean Connery film, I'd much sooner mention Zardoz as a cult film, and I am the leader of the cult. I know I shared this before (more than once), but... I'll vote for The Ipcress File. EDIT: By the way from what I have seen, it doesn't seem that Video Hound's Groovy Movies book is making the claim that these are cult films, and that may just come to down to Paul's designation (and he does classify things in rather unorthodox ways ways quite often). I've seen Goldfinger and probably a couple of others as some of the names seem to ring a bell. But not enough to vote. Since it seems this is part 1 out of 20, I'll be looking forward to the rest before making judgments of the cultness of the poll (though at the moment I tend to agree with the last two posts).

To avoid any further controversy over what constitutes a "cult film", I'll change the poll title to "Groovy Movies" instead, the same as Video Hound's book title. I love that Bond/Zardoz mash-up. By the way, Zardoz is coming up in Poll #7 (or Chapter 7), titled "Far Out, Man".

I wouldn't have cared that much about how you titled it, although of course one should not be surprised if one is expected to justify or explain one's reasoning. I mentioned that about Videohound's Groovy Movies not claiming these to be cult movies based on my preliminary research (cult is not in the book title obviously form the image you posted) because I thought there might have been and could be some confusion about that, I mention in case it wasn't clear. I do think when getting a list from something it is better to be more faithful to how they titled it, so I think it's right to change it. That said, I would love to see a cult movies list from you (your own picks that you consider to all be cult films). I think of Clockwork Orange as a cult film despite being a very well-known director, but Kubrick also kind of has his cult of fans. It has the transgressive quality that I find common in cult films. And yes, that mash-up is fantastic. |

^ Well, I know and love almost all of those movies. The Logan in my name, as many know, comes from Logan's Run. Many of those I have on my PVR as I had this commercial free movie channel and liked to record many of my old favourites, and quite few of those I have on DVD and VHS tapes. That's like my films "comfort list" right there.

Hi,
I don't even feel qualified to vote ... only seen 4 of those films! I'll try catching a couple more since you added links .... thanks. And I'm not a Bond fan, and never have been, and the Playboy printouts of the ladies was a lot better than in any of the films! Less teasing, if we can say that! Three of the films are the Harry Palmer series, which I have seen all 3 of those films with Michael Caine in his early days, really showing off his accent to very good effect. You almost needed a sub-title many times.

I've seen seven of the movies in the poll, but regrettably, I still haven't seen any of Michael Caine's three Harry Palmer movies, although I'll add the links if and when they pop up on YouTube.

You're right. I think most of the bizarre and sometimes obscure sci-fi films coming up in Poll #7 are far better suited to cult movie status. Alphaville Barbarella A Clockwork Orange The Day the Fish Came Out Fantastic Voyage The Illustrated Man Logan's Run The Omega Man Planet of the Vampires Seconds Silent Running Soylent Green The Tenth Victim 2001: A Space Odyssey Zardoz |

I've always liked what I call '60s Romp movies (or 'screwball comedies' as they're termed), a cousin of the British Spy genre--- The Party, What's New Pussycat, The World of Henry Orient, There's a Girl in my Soup, Casino Royale , etc. ... all of which include Peter Sellers one way or another. |

Now this is down my alley! The Ipcress File, Funeral in Berlin and Arabesque are on my cult list. But George Segal's flippant lead in The Quiller Memorandum just kills me every time (as well as a terrific cast with icy Max Von Sydow, Alec Guiness, George Sanders , the wicked Gunther Meisner and the lovely Senta Berger).
