Podium:

1. Comus (the album is a masterpiece)

2. Gnags

3. XTC.

Very good poll

happy to see Mike again
Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

A lovely theme with so much to discover! This edition, however, was a little less musically diverse imo (PA-listed artists) which didn't make it easy for me to make a choice. But ok, this is where my votes will go to (in no particular order):

Greg: Comus - Winter Is a Coloured Bird A soulful, delicate and finely crafted 70s style acoustic psychodelic folk/progressive rock piece, with poetic lyrics which together create a melancholic wintry mood. Is there an implied sociocritical message, maybe? I particularely enjoyed  the interplay of female and male vocals with a rich instrumentation including i.a. acoustic guitars, violins and flute.

Anders: Gnags - Endnu et efterår Rock with a strong influence from reggae and other caribbean music styles (steelpan). Despite the title and lyrics (engl. Yet Another Autumn) there is a summery, laidback vibe to it which I really enjoyed. I think this is the first time I hear reggae music in these polls.

Pekka: Tavaramarkkinat - Kevät Some girl power here but girls who won me over with their feminine charm. A soulful and melancholic rock ballad. A harmony of vocals, acoustic guitars, piano and subtle drums. What's not to like here?

Honorable mentions:

Kees: Agnes Obel - September Song  A piano piece where Agnes skillfully creates a dreamy autumnal soundscape and carries you off into her musical world. I mainly knew her through her nordic style indie pop ballads but wasn't aware that her talent went far beyond that. A really nice surprise!

Lorenzo: Paolo Fresu - Luce d'autunno  A major figure on the Italian jazz scene with international reach. Fresu's style is obviously based on the classic early Miles Davis sound. Here he collaborated i.a. with a classical string quartet which gives this nostalgic composition an individual touch. Maybe with an extra pinch of innovation it would be even more convincing.

Christian: Mick Karn - The Sad Velvet Breath of Summer and Winter
An atmospheric, melancholic and misty soundscape which is becoming increasingly experimental and also darker. A transition from the somewhat lighter summer into the darkness of winter. In terms of genre I would classify it as experimental rock with an unusual intrumentation which caught my attention. Besides the combination of electronic and acoustic instrumentation I find the interaction of two different keyboard insturments particularly remarkable (electronic organ and piano). It is definitely an interesting and stand out composition but right now I'm rather in a spring mood and my heart desires a bit lighter sounds.

I am glad that the young French composer, Camille Pépin, was able to convince some of you, even though only an excerpt of her concerto 'The Sound of Trees' was presented.

Thank you all for this enjoyable journey through the seasons of the year!

My special thanks go out to Cristi for suggesting this beatiful theme, to Greg for taking over and saving this poll and to everybody who took the time to comment, esp. Anders of course!

^ Thanks Mila. I'm sure Cristi would have put it together when he got the chance, but I was happy to help (your efforts made it easy). I like the collaborative aspect of the series. As long as we are helping each other out, appreciative of each other's contributions, and generally positive and encouraging, I think this will have life in it.   You did what I find the harder part with compiling the list of contestants, the nominations, and pointing out the undecideds, as well as creating the playlist. I agree that including the playlist in the OP would be helpful so that it's less likely to be missed, and more easily found.   Glad you and Lorenzo appreciated the Comus, and I really appreciate your comments.

Indeed, above all, it seems essential to me that we continue to support each other as we have in the past. I love these polls and I appreciate this community very much!

Btw. I'm celebrating my first anniversary as a member of the IP community! I found out about the PA Forums through Anders who I know from another music forum. It was thanks to you, Greg that I was able to join Lorenzo's poll last minute which Nickie kindly took over because Lorenzo had this terrible accident at the time. You shared the last spot in the poll with me. I will never forget that and the warm welcome from all of you! The theme was 'Emotional Songs by Female Singers'. An ideal topic for me to start with! Smile

Renaissance's A Song For All Seasons is an iconic masterpiece, but already known to me. In order to make the task easier, I will also not vote for the bands/artists I already know, and that's Comus, Peter Hammill, and XTC, even though I hadn't heard the latter two songs and they're very nice.

That leaves me with two choices from the more classical realm, namely Camille Pepin and Agnes Obel, wonderful music here. And then I'm prog fan enough to be drawn to the Anima Mundi opus. I'm not always keen on contemporary bands doing symph or neo prog, but there is much in this one and high musicality. Vey enjoyable. (XTC and Hammill would probably have deserved my vote as much, but there's less of a discovery factor.)

Finally got to listen to the nominations - my quick take on them:

Anima Mundi - Spring Knocks on the Door of Men: A Vivaldi-esque start before the Squire-esque bass sets in and a very retro-symph prog sound takes over. It is nice, but it also sounds a bit too formulaic to my ears.

Gnags - Endnu Et Efterår: Nice rhythm section here, which makes this track very rich sounding, with the subtle guitar touches. I'm less convinced by the vocals, though. But the percussion is really great!

Paolo Fresu - Luce d'autunno: Now, I could imagine myself on a warm summer night sipping a cognac under the stars... It must be an Indian Summer then, looking at the title. Warm soothing music, very pleasant, but it is also a song which make you understand that it will be the last one of the night... Grab your coat and go home!

Comus - Winter Is a Coloured Bird: One of those "cult" prog bands that I discovered only a couple of years ago. A wonderful track, that combines the enchanting with the unsettling. A very narrative quality to the song with the vocal harmonies and wonderful acoustic guitar sounds. Rightly so a classic!

Tavaramarkkinat - Kevät: Oh, I immediately fall in love with the vocals (it must be Spring!)... The song is rather basic, but perfect: piano, guitar, drums, vocals... they're all spot-on throughout. A really great and pleasant song!

Mick Karn - The Sad Velvet Breath of Summer & Winter: Now this is a surprise - I wouldn't expect this from Mick Karn. Wonderful, very classical in a way (through the instrumentation) but at the same time very modern and sonically rich. Great discovery.

The Flaming Lips - My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion: A great melodic rock song, rather gentle and somehow easy going. I don't hear much rebellion in it, but it is a very nice listen.

Camille Pépin - The Sound of Trees, mvt 4/6: And now for something completely different... Great contemporary music; this is my garden put to music ;) It proposes a kind of bridge between Steve Reich and more "classic" chamber music. Very captivating.

Naxatras - Spring Song: Hmm, lovely song... the gentle side of Spring. Nice soothing vocal supported by acoustic and electric (slide?) guitars. Drums and bass are rather conventional, but the ensemble gives it all a nice psychedelic touch.

Peter Hammill - Summer Song (In the Autumn): A short but powerful track, very Hammill. Wonderful.

Renaissance - A Song for All Seasons: Ah, a classic rock song by one of the giants. A bit too well known to me but it is not for nothing a classic, although Renaissance has never been on the top of my personal charts, somehow... A pleasure to listen to, though!

XTC - Season Cycle: Another band that I know and like very much, but I don't listen to them that much. A great track from a great album, here with their beatlesque touch.

Hmm, not easy to choose just three out of these... I'll be back...

Thanks to Cristi for putting up this wonderful poll idea, which brought forward a great diversity of music suggestions, some of which I discover here. Thanks to Greg for putting up the poll when Cristi was away and thanks to all for participating in this music exchange!

Now, my podium is a bit arbitrary, because I liked all of the music, but in the end my votes go to:
- Tavaramarkkinat - Kevät
- Mick Karn - The Sad Velvet Breath of Summer & Winter
- Peter Hammill - Summer Song (In the Autumn)
