Here is your annual reminder that this song appeared on the 1984 album Grace Under Pressure, and they shot a video for it.
Clearly, Neil wasn't done with "sci fi" lyrics (in this case, dystopian SF). One humanoid escapee One android on the run Seeking freedom beneath the lonely desert sun Trying to change its program Trying to change the mode, crack the code Images conflicting into data overload One zero zero one zero zero one SOS One zero zero one zero zero one In distress One zero zero one zero zero Memory banks unloading Bytes break into bits Unit One's in trouble and it's scared out of its wits Guidance systems break down A struggle to exist To resist A pulse of dying power in a clenching plastic fist One zero zero one zero zero one SOS One zero zero one zero zero one In distress One zero zero one zero zero It replays each of the days A hundred years of routines Bows its head and prays To the mother of all machines |

For some reason I was just thinking about a rumor back in the 80's (late 80's) that Neil had cancer. At the time that turned out not to be true but the weird thing is when you fastfoward 30 years or so that's what he died of. Strange. Does anyone else remember that rumor?

I'm generally quiet about HYF since soooo many feel it is such a weak album. Like all of those I bought on release and simply enjoy that record so much, still do. Back then I found it so fresh of a record, the musicianship quite mature and the lyrics and "feeling" of where these songs come from also very mature.
Tai Shan for me has such a great vibe, I love the melody and sound of it. I also think Geddy's vocals sound fantastic, my main complaint was not too much of a fan of Neil's snare sound, too much echo/reverb I guess. For example on Open Secrets too much air/echo chamber dynamics, it is a 100% digital recording and from 1987, so still trying to figure out that whole digital thing, it sounds great though for a DDD release. Mission is also a great track......Over all not a bad tune on the album. It does not get enough attention, the height of Rush going thru the electronic/synth era and the height of a lot of displeasure for those that only wanted the prog metal of 2112. Again for me HYF is a very mature sounding Rush record.

To me that was a bizarre mentality, bolstered by the fact I got into Rush in the '80s (but I had no issue with "pre-synths" Rush when I worked my way backward). That started with Signals, where everyone felt the guitar took a "backseat" (which I continue to disagree with). The friend who got me into Rush (he was into them way earlier) even recounted a review where some guy lamented the "new sound" and "longed for the Rush of old"...and it was a review of Moving Pictures. I agree, I have pretty much lived thru all the eras of Rush, I started with them around '76-'77.....It's called PROGRESSION, something all bands strive for, not to be stuck in a world of sameness. That was NEVER what Rush was all about, I just don't understand why people back in the late 80's had problems. Any interview, print back then, they spoke of moving forward and diving into new areas especially with the new wave sounds like The Police that was a huge influence. So I guess people thought they were lying in interviews back then......sheesh. Rush pretty much said what they did and did what they said. From a performance and recording perspective very little peeling back any onion layers was needed, you didn't have to go "WTH hell were they thinking!!!" That ended with Think I'm Going Bald

"...Bald" is a true oddity in the Rush catalogue. But they did do it as a joke-response to Kiss's "Goin' Blind" (they were opening for them at the time). Neil coined the title because Alex was obsessed over the possibility of losing his hair later in life. Either way, I'm glad they never did anything like that again, though other songs like "Anagram (for Mongo)" and "Dog Years" also put forth off-beat topics and showed they liked to have fun, too. |

It's kind of boring but other than that I don't really have a problem with it either. Why do Geddy and Alex dislike "Tai Shan?" Are they jealous of Neil for going to China or something? |

"Dog Years" is "boring," but you don't have a problem with it? Are you sure, Mike?

I also like HYF a lot. Not as much as Power Windows, which to me is their 80s synth peak. I do agree with Geddy though that by this time they had gone a little too far in that direction and needed a reset. I think he talks about that in the documentary. I could be wrong and misremembering it from some other interview though.

I like Test for Echo in general-It's the last Rush album I have really gotten into. I enjoy some of the later releases like Snakes and Arrows and Clockwork Angels, but for some reason Test is that last one to connect with me at a visceral level. Driven is a song I really love-I think it's the way Lifeson gets his guitar to scream. Very heavy feel.

Driven is even better on the Different Stages live album For me, the best of Test For Echo is Driven, Totem and Time and Motion. Limbo is good. Virtuality starts out with that killer riff and then falls off. I can take or leave the rest of the album.
