I don't know if many people here know bands like Iona, but i find that the blend of celtic/progressive is very interesting. Do you know any progressive-celtic band (or any band with celtic influences)? This track by Iona it's outstanding Dave Brons also released some interesting stuff (his last album is prog-rock plus celtic and the lyrics are based in Lord of The Rings... magic). Dave Bainbridge (guitarist of Iona) recently released "To the far away", which is prog-celtic as his finest, featuring vocals of Sally Minear (yes, the daughter of multi instrumentalist Kerry Minnear of Gentle Giant). |

Dave Brons, Dave Bainbridge, and Sally Minnear (among many, many others) are guest musicians on Cronofonía’s rather good eponymous release from last year. It’s not Celtic prog by any stretch of the imagination, but I imagine you’d still rather enjoy it.

The kings of Celtic Prog were the Irish band Horslips, who are credited with creating the genre called Celtic Rock and spawned two full blown concept albums, The Tain and The Book Of Invasions. Here's a sample.

Hi, Was going to mention Alan Stivell, whose work is probably more than just "celtic" in that there is a lot of material that is rock, some with a taste of jazz, and even some with classical motifs. Dan Ar Braz had been with Alan for quite a while:
All of these albums are magnificent with a nice rock edge, and AGAIN, I think was done with American tastes in mind, and it rocks out really nice in a lot of places, specially some of the "standards" in Alan's repertoire. Highly recommended.

I particularly like The Moors, due mainly to the authenticity of the Celtic music... The Moors are a two person band from Boston, with one self-titled release in 2004 (re-released in 2007). Their music can be categorized as prog folk, with heavy Celtic, pagan, and medieval influences. Their music contains beautiful, soaring vocals, driving percussion and bass lines, and virtuosic fretless guitar riffs to create lush, enchanting soundscapes over a prog backdrop. The primary driving force behind the band is Sharynne MacLeod NicMhacha. She is a Celtic scholar, singer, musician, and author, trained in Celtic Studies at Harvard University. She is a direct descendant of Clan MacLeod, long recorded as having connections with the “Fairy Folk.” Her work focuses on preserving the indigenous shamanic wisdom of the Celtic world. Sharynne presents at colleges and teaching centers in Ireland, Scotland, and North America. Guitar wizardry is provided by Scott Dakota. Says Scott of his guitar work: "The songs were all arranged around live looping to build the layers and textures, and no keyboards, synths, or basses were used. Everything here is fretless guitar, tuned drum machine, and vocals. What functions as bass is the low range of the wide-range fretless guitar, which covers bass through guitar range. It's tuned low to high starting from Eb a half step below bass guitar low E, up in open 5ths. Eb Bb F C G D. The idea being, with careful part writing and some looping assist, I can cover most of the octaves needed for rock orchestration." Bandmembers: Sharynne MacLeod NicMhacha: Lead Vocals, Backing Vocals, Chanting, Flute, Tin Whistle (Irish Pennywhistle), Harp, Viol, Recorder (Tenor), Flute (Tibetan Wood), Viola, Bells, Percussion. Scott Dakota: Guitar (Wide-range Fretless, Self-modified), Effects, Viol (Bowed Two String Fretless), Percussion, Drum Programming, Backing Vocals, Overtone Voice, Tape Loops, Drone, Noises. I have to second the wonderful recent album from Dave Bainbridge - To The Far Away, featuring Troy Donockley and others on a variety of pipes and whistles.
