I've listened to some of it and it's all fine and good, not sure I'm going to buy it yet. I do like the singer, she has a good presence. Unfortunately for Alex I think he will be going on the road soon to play this stuff live, although still would not be surprised if he does not as so many will be expecting Rush material as well. But he can't deny the other younger band members the opportunity to play live......I'm sure he is torn.

I'm not gonna post all the stuff in the massive MP 40th Anniversary Box Set, but here are a couple. So glad I bought this, I kinda waffled back and forth about it originally. It is now sold out from Rush Backstage, maybe still available on Amazon or record stores but I've seen it on Discogs already for $400+ on secondary market.
The live material is excellent! Neil's kit is right up front in the mix and so is Alex's guitar, I always felt on Exit...Stage Left Alex was a bit lost in the mix, not here. The hardback book is a massive treat, all those pics from 1981 MP Tour just bring back sooo many amazing memories of that tour. I was a 16-17yr old teen in total fascination of Rush at that time, saw that tour at the Forum in LA. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Rush were undoubtedly one of my favourite bands until 2112 "dedicated to the genius of Ayn Rand" came out. The right wing anti com'nist stuff put me - and a lot of my mates - off. I appreciated the musicianship but not the politics.
Moving Pictures was great, but after that, it becomes "not my kind of music" any more. |

I’m guessing you never looked into the reason behind that Ayn Rand credit enough to figure out Rush are not at all in alignment with her politics? Neil put that there for a couple specific reasons: 1. because he really enjoyed her novels, and the whole band felt inspired by her idea of artistic freedom and not catering to what society would seem to want you to create, and 2. The plot of 2112 is highly reminiscent of the plot of her novelette Anthem, which Neil only came to realize when the album was nearly complete, so in order to avoid a plagiarism accusation, he gave her credit in the liner notes. If you read up on Rush’s and Neil’s politics, especially some years down the road when Neil had gotten past his Ayn Rand phase in his reading hobby, you’ll find that they are absolutely not aligned to her super right wing views. In fact Neil’s more humanitarian world view came out very clearly in a lot of his lyrics post Moving Pictures. You may not care for the music, but take a look at the lyrics to songs like Second Nature, Heresy, The Garden, and Nobody’s Hero. Neil wasn’t at all like Ayn Rand in his political views, he often wrote about wanting to help people who were less fortunate, and about the importance of human compassion and empathy. Ayn Rand forfeit those values in favor of pure independence. All Rush ever wanted was artistic independence. |

Pretty much sums it all up.....You don't have to dive too deep into the lyrics to understand where Neil's mind was at while writing for Rush.

Moving Pictures re-enters the Billboard 200 chart at #11. As well #18 on Artist 100, and #1 on the Top Rock Albums chart.
All due to the Moving Pictures 40th Anniversary Box Set released 2 weeks ago.

The Arrow instrumentals still make me think they should have done an album without vocals. This kicks so much ass! Rush fans would've lapped up fifty minutes of this kind of stuff.

I just received Hold Your Fire in the mail today. Recently I also received Power Windows and Presto. There's only one other Rush studio album I don't currently have and that one, Grace Under Pressure, is on the way (I had to order it from discogs). I've heard and owned all of these in the past (except for maybe HYF which I borrowed from my brother's friend but not sure if I ever owned it). Anyway, HYF sounds good and maybe even better than I remembered it.

Hold Your Fire is nearly as good as Power Windows (a song like "Big Money" is hard to top) and a few notches below Grace Under Pressure, which, pound for pound, delivers consecutive knockout blows myriad bands wish they were capable of (prog and otherwise). The live version of "Turn the Page" from A Show of Hands is even better. Geddy's bass punches through the mix more. I like "Prime Mover" a lot. Now that's an underrated Rush song. "Open Secrets" probably has the best lyrics on the album (I know, it's debatable).

^Lyrically, I think Rush reached their peak on PW and HYF. In fact I was never a big fan of "prime mover" but I think the lyrics go a long way to saving it. However, I can now honestly say that I don't think there are any weak songs on HYF not even "tai shan." Power Windows has some songs (actually same thing with HYF) that I initially thought were kind of weak (like maybe "emotion detector") but I think they have all grown on me. It's interesting how these albums still sound fresh all these years later.

I feel Neil flexed lyrically like a beast on Vapor Trails. That will always be their "comeback" for me. "Freeze" (Yes, I prefer the original mix!)
The city crouches, steaming Slipping through the dark streets Sometimes I freeze until the light comes Coiled for the spring or caught like a creature in the headlights The menace threatens, closing I can't stand to reason or surrender to a reflex Sometimes we freeze until the light comes Blood running cold mind going down into a dark night Sometimes I freeze, sometimes I fight |

Neil saw the world around him so clearly and was able to put it down so vividly on those two records in particular. More and more my favorite of his lyrics come from the mid/late 80s.

Yep. Not that the other albums didn't have good or even great lyrics but for me personally that was Neil's peak. I think part of it could have to do with interests. I'm more interested in philosophy, psychology and sociology than I am in mythology or science fiction, otherwise the earlier stuff would probably be more to my liking. So to a degree I think it has to do with what you find interesting.
