In that case, it's a good thing I didn't include Dream Theater too or that would've really skewed the poll results. As things turned out, Ayreon's first and last appearance in this series of polls really was The Final Experiment, ironically.

I finally discovered what Aesma Daeva actually means today..... Apparently, it's "the Younger Avestan name of Zoroastrianism's demon of wrath as a hypostatic entity", so there you go, although I always thought it sounded more like an ancient Roman name for an Olde English town.

I've just posted all of the ratings and albums links at the top of Page 1 if you want to check out any of the other albums in the poll. I was surprised to see that Ayreon were still in the poll, after Cristi managed to convince me that they're NOT Symphonic Metal and should never have been included in the poll in the first place, in which case, it's a good thing I didn't include Dream Theater in the poll too.

It's because they are (more or less) the only ones who appeal to a prog audience, you nana...

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

It's good to see Ayreon eventually went on to win this poll by a wide margin, even though they were never meant to be here in the first place.

I've just finished listening to Aesma Daeva's intriguing third album: The New Athens Ethos, which sounds like no other Symphonic Metal album I've ever heard before, but in an entirely good way.

There's nothing wrong with a healthy dose of off-topicness now and again and I haven't seen anyone "trolling", which seems to be your way of describing friendly banter.

Yes,this long-running thread has definitely got "Legs"! That could have something to do with Cristi disagreeing with my loose interpretation of Symphonic Metal, where many of the original bands in this debut albums poll didn't make it through to the second round. Too bad I couldn't include ZZ Top here too, as I'm saving them for a Boogie Rock poll. |

Whatever, I like AD's first two albums. They're very different from each other and I like them for different reasons, but I have to listen to them playing the tracks in another order than the original and skipping some.

also which people are you talking about? Symphonic metal fans are quite devoted to the genre. Other metalheads enjoy a little bit here and there, myself included.

And Aesma Daeva doesn't fit well in that pattern, so it could be a problem if this band mainly has been promoted as Symphonic Metal.

I'm not sure I understood what you said here. What else is there to expect for symphonic metal?

Right, not so few people seem to be happy with that, nowadays.

When done right it works, just balance the heaviness, skill, melody and I'm good.
