I've since divided prog into three main eras in my recent series of Top 12 lists. ![]() Classic Prog Era:- 1967-1979 Neo Prog Era:- 1980-1999 Modern Prog Era:- 2000-2022

Neo-prog is not an era but a sound, a style/genre of prog. You should know that by now. Classic era and modern era in your classification at least make sense.

^ I'd love to have seen Ayreon in the poll too, but sadly, they didn't pick up enough points to make it into the final list.

I've tried to give the Cardiacs bizarre debut a fair chance, but my heart wasn't really in it. The album sounds like a bunch of circus clowns performing at some manic carnival. The punkish "singer" sounds terrible and the tuneless music has been described as "Pronk" (Progressive Punk). This is crazy waltzer music which is likely to give you a headache. Stop the ride, I want to get off. ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - April 04 2022 at 01:57 |

^ Each to their own I suppose. Tim Smith (RIP) was a genius to many and their music is unique. First stumbled across them at Stonehenge in 84 around 2 am. It was wonderful!

^Colour me envious!
Then again..I was two years old in 84 ![]() Funny how tastes differ but once you get your head around other members’ style, it can actually be quite helpful. I know quite a few reviewers/members here who have almost the complete opposite tastes compared to mine…but it’s something that I can count on it. If they feel something is poor (say 1 or 2 stars), well there is a good chance I’m going to love it. Also works the other way around ![]() |

Stop using the "thumbs down" emoticon after explaining why you dislike something, it feels aggressive and also arrogant in this particular context. Plus you used the "dead" emoticon already, that's hatred abuse TBH.

Listening to bands and albums that others enjoy here is a great way for me to discover new music, even if it's not always music I enjoy too. Vive La Difference!

There's no need to get all emotional about emoticons. The green emoticon was supposed to mean I felt a bit queasy after taking a crazy waltzer ride with the Cardiacs manic debut. ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - April 04 2022 at 04:05 |

Adore Cardiacs, Tim's writing is genius, one of my biggest regrets is not discovering them in time to see them. Calling the singer terrible and the music tuneless is ridiculous. So you don't like it, so what.

I'm not familiar with Cardiacs debut album, but I do find it interesting that you describe Cardiacs music as "sounds like a bunch of circus clowns performing at some manic carnival" because I recently suggested on the forum that the homogenous combination of prog and punk probably sounds like carnival music. |

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

I haven't heard carnival music as cranky as that since Fred Karno's Circus, and that's going back a good while. Some people have criticised my favourite YES album - The Quest - but I just think, so what, get over it.
