Yes, and I might learn something too. I already know I should avoid like the proverbial plague, the cookie monsters running rampant in the music of Dimmu Borgir and Opeth, having listened to both bands now. Thumbs Down

On a positive note though, I already know I'm going to love listening to every album by Ayreon in this series of polls, even though they're not Symphonic Metal. Thumbs Up

Like Nick told you, Opeth have several albums that have no growls and are basically retro-prog, you might enjoy those. Starting with their 2011 aalbums Heritage, Opeth gave up the death metal in their music and became a retro-prog band. Also their 2003 album Damnation is Camel and Gilmour worship.

^ I'm sorry, I can't get past the first Opeth album, so it's better if I leave them well alone and move onto a Symphonic Metal band that's more to my tastes, like Nightwish for instance, who are coming up here tomorrow. Smile

Again, I meant in the future you can give Opeth a chance, just stick with the albums that are not progressive death metal.

Just try listening to:

Damnation
Heritage
Pale Communion
Sorceress
In Cauda Venenum

Thanks for the suggestion, but it's either all or nothing with me, where I'll either listen to all of the albums by a band or none at all, depending on whether or not I like the first album. The video below is a sample of  the dreadful racket I heard on Opeth's first album, so I've now saved myself a lot of time by not needing to listen to any further Opeth albums. Smile

I can think of a thousand bands I'd rather listen to than Opeth, so why would I waste time listening to a band I don't like from the outset? Ermm

^ Opeth's debut is awesome.
I don't listen to artists and albums that way, there are bands I enjoy just an album or two.
There are also bands that have a lot of albums, some of them not so good, I'm skipping on those.

Check this out, I dare you Evil Smile

I must admit, Opeth's first album started off well enough - with its Iron Maiden-style power chords - but as soon as I heard the cookie monster growling vocals, that was it, I just couldn't stand to listen to any more of the album. and anyway, Opeth aren't included in this poll, so I have a perfect reason to give them a wide berth from now on. Smile

Forgive me for asking, but does this thread have any point or purpose now, or has it dissolved into some form of chat room?

Well, it's just that we are allegedly in Symph Metal Heaven... everyone who has any interest has voted and are at the point of losing interest in the subject, or faith in there ever being a follow-up poll for a 2nd album.. they've picked up their jackets and gone home, leaving you two in the corner, discussing the merits (or otherwise) of Opeth, who are about as Symph as Nine Inch Nails...

... would that be a reasonable assessment of the present state of affairs??

It's dissolved into some form of chat room, but to keep you entertained - hopefully - here's the first album from Nightwish, led by operatic soprano, Tarja Turunen. Is she Finnish?
No, she's only just got started. Tongue

I concur with Dr. Spock's entirely logical assessment of the situation. Big smile

Paul, whatever you do, please don't try to sign up for the Diplomatic Corps, will you?  Embarrassed

It may be the case that you are in fact introducing yourself to new material, and are learning while you post... but you must understand that many here (myself included) have been familiar with this repertoire for the past 15-20 years and you aren't telling us anything new...

^^ well, would I be correct in assuming that when you joined PA 16 years ago, you were already very familiar with Nightwish?

If I remember right, I listened to Nightwish very early 2000s.
