And now with the late additions:

Mila:  Pikkardiyska Tertsiya “Plyvne kacha”  Very beautiful choral piece, quite fitting for the theme.

tigerfeet:  Lucas Vallim “Breathe”  Faithful cover of this moving song.  Makes me want to listen to more of this artist.

OK, let's see what nominations we have already:
jamesbaldwyn: Piccola Orchestra Avion Travel - Sentimento
Archisorceros:  Falconer - The Clarion Call
nick_h_nz: Giorgi Mikadze
Logan: M. Gira - Blind
JD: Big Pig - Hungry Town
mathman0806: Cloud Nothings - Wasted Days
Snicolette: Pearls Before Swine - There Was a Man
Mila13: Pikkardiyska Tertsiya - Plyvne kacha
I prophesy disaster: Van der Graaf Generator - Emperor In His War-Room: The Emperor/The Room
tigerfeet: Lucas Vallim - Breathe

Their only suggestion, so the nomination unless I hear anything else:
suitkees: Lluís Llach - Campanades a morts
Cristi: AudioPLastik - Distant Skies
Catcher10: Funkadelic - Maggot Brain
Meltdowner: Jorge Palma - Monólogo de um cidadão frustrado

Nomination still expected (I believe this will come soon Wink):
dr. wu23

My own will be the first: The Grassy Knoll - Unbelievable Truth

Tell me if I have missed anything!

Although the theme was not interpreted in the same way by everyone, this is a pretty good collection. I actually managed to listen to most (will do the rest today) but unfortunately had not enough time to write on them all. The one that best reflected my feelings in the moment I listened to it was actually the Funkadelic one. I love the Waterboys song but knew this already, so in my view you made the right choice there Nicky.

Probably you only went for the part of the lyrics that I had translated, which is about 1/3 of it. Chances are that wasn't enough. I think the lyrics are meant in a more general way, bringing together the idea that Jesus died for us and our sins (not necessarily from a religious point of view), and how it hasn't made the world a better place because still so many die, killed by others, without a chance from the beginning. Kunze is probably one of the best lyricists in Germany, and his lyrics are hard to translate. He has something of a prog connection, (a) doing a tour and live album with Anyone's Daughter, and (b) translating some of Peter Hammill's songs into German for Hammill's German language album "Ausgerechnet Goldfisch".

You are correct in that those were the lyrics I referenced.  Tom Rapp (Pearls Before Swine) often referenced Jesus in the same kind of way, enough so that I think he (Rapp) may have experienced visions at times (maybe lysergic ones, maybe not always).

Thank you for your deeper info on this and also for the thumbs up on my choice.  It is simple, but also has depth.

Voting is now open!
If you want to do it in a slightly unusual way, vote for the ones that fit your feelings best in the moment you listen to them, except of course your own. As always, three votes everyone!

Logan, do you want to open the next poll?

My votes are for the first nomination in the poll, and the last two, but it could easily have been others. Lots of good stuff, although in my present mood I’d probably be more inclined to listen to A Perfect Circle’s cover of What’s Goin’ On from their anti-war album, eMotion, than Gaye’s version. Or any of the songs from that album, really. I might have to go and put it on. I know a lot of APC fans don’t like that particular album, and it is quite depressing, I guess. But I really like it. I particularly like their cover of Lennon’s Imagine which sucks almost all optimism and positivity out of the song, making it more funereal and dirge like.

Alternate playlist (Europe)

The video of the piece by The Grassy Knoll is not accessible here due to youtube country restrictions. So here's an alternate, European playlist. Wink

Re Christian's choice of choice track, I did add an alternate video to the playlist soon after you posted, Mila (So is the last one in the list), but the alternate doesn't show up on all of my devices/ browsers.

Anyway...

I've listened through quite a few times, and choosing just three will be really hard. I have discounted ones I already knew and loved, so "Maggot Brain", which is a big-time, long-time fave of mine, and the Pearls Before Swine's "There Was a Man" will be out of the race So will VdGG (one of my favourite bands in PA) and Marvin Gaye. While I know the Pink Floyd song really well (would anyone here not know it well?) but as it's a cover and I really like it, it is understandbaly includable. By the way, I wouldn't always discount music that I know, but when I already have trouble choosing between new-to-me ones, which is usually the case, at least it limits my choices.

I'm down to six new-to-me options that are still speaking to me the most:

Giorgi Mikadze - Moaning
The Grassy Knoll - Unbelievable Truth*
Cloud Nothings - Wasted Days
Pikkardiyska Tertsiya - Plyvne kacha
Lucas Vallim - Breathe
Jorge Palma - Monólogo de um cidadão frustrado

*The Gassy Troll would be a good name for a band.

Bites the bullet, could go another way on next listen, but in no particular order:
Giorgi Mikadze - "Moaning"
The Grassy Knoll - "Unbelievable Truth"
Pikkardiyska Tertsiya - "Plyvne kacha"

I usually wish that I could vote for more than three in these polls. All I'm glad to have heard. Thanks to all for their contributions.

1.       Logan:  Something in the deep vocals I found so convincing with this one, even though fairly simple, it won for me.  Michael Gira “Blind”  Begins with guitar and a choral sort of wash.  Deep voiced male vocal.  A song of looking back over one’s life and realizing how little one really knew, and indeed, how much one kept hidden from oneself.  A reflective self-discovery piece.

2.        Cristi:  Much more complex, I enjoyed this next for this reason, along with the lyrics.  Audioplastik “Distant Skies”  Synths I think are creating the strings and harp-ish sounds.  There is a full orchestral sound swell, then an impassioned vocal.  Sort of a heavy prog sound with lots of electric guitar during the chorus.  Tasty lead guitar as the tension in the piece builds and goes to mostly drums and guitar washes.  Goes back into chorus and comes to a fade, similar to the way the piece started.

3.        Mila:  This I liked for it’s haunting quality.  Pikkardiyska Tertsiya “Plyvne kacha”  Very beautiful choral piece, quite fitting for the theme.

Special Mentions:

dr wu23:  You’ve picked three winning songs this time, although I’m sticking with my personal rule.  I think you probably hit the most on a combination of feelings that I am experiencing now, however, so special recognition for that.

tigerfeet:  Lucas Vallim “Breathe”  Faithful cover of this moving song.  Makes me want to listen to more of this artist.     Special mention

Bubbling Under:

Kees:  Lluís Llach  “Campanades a morts”

Catcher 10Funkadelic “Maggot Brain”

George:  Cloud Nothings “Wasted Days”
