I never had a lot of vinyl...but I did have a sh*t-ton of cassette and VHS tapes. Some of them are worth some money now, especially the Varèse Sarabande soundtracks, many of which I upgraded to CD, but still... The '90s were all about buying CDs by the bazillion new prog bands crawling out of the woodwork in North & South America, Europe and Japan.

I have a 3 year old and I’ve scaled it down a bit for how much new music I buy. It is an expense, but I still keep everything available for a listen. I can’t live without my music. For raising a family I need all my sanity! :) |

I have a ton of cassettes, both albums and mix tapes I made. All the mix tapes are on chrome II or metal type IV but they are in boxes in storage and I really need to find them. All of them are in cassette cases so I am hoping they are in good shape still, but as you know tape can stick together after so many years, I don't think you can bake them like you can reel to reel tapes due to the plastic cases.... When I find them all and if in good shape I may have to buy a cassette deck again.....

@Catcher. You had to bring up chrome and metal cassettes again. Some of the best memories of my life are from my teen years and recording vinyl to cassette. Bands like Rush were a huge influence on my artistic personality. I miss those days. What I would give to go back in a time machine. I can see the scenery as I go back in time riding my bike to the hi fi store. Also the Maxell tapes turning in the Onkyo recording Lakeside Park. A virtual time machine.
I was big into recording from vinyl to cassette as a teenager. I do remember riding my bike to the hifi store to buy my hifi equipment as a kid. I was 13 and 14 years old. Had two paper routes, cut lawns and worked at the community pool. I would save my money for vinyl and buy vinyl, equipment and cassettes. My first cassette deck was a double deck Onkyo. I also took a ride to buy my equalizer a dual 12 band ADC. The rest of my system consisted of a Pioneer SX 680, Onkyo belt driven turntable with graphite arm and Pioneer HPM 60 speakers. The 70’s are unmatched for affordable hi fi equipment. Seems pretty much everything sold was mid to hifi quality. I loved buying the chrome and metal cassettes using the eq to fine tune as I copied my vinyl to cassette. Recording with the eq produced pretty much vinly quality cassettes. I believe I used the Dolby B though I had Dolby C also. May have used the C some. I liked the chrome better than the metal. The metal wasn’t as smooth. They were louder though. A bit more dynamic range. Super expensive though. I think the cassettes were sold in packages of 8 or 10. I would get the Maxell chrome cassettes. They had Memorex and TDK too. The Maxell were my favorite. Was a big Rush fan. I loved Caress of Steel, 2112, Hemispheres and the first album Rush. The rest of them too. I remember A Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres being released. What a time for music. The live release All the Worlds a Stage was a favorite too. Just got the 40 year editions of A Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres. It felt good buying Rush releases again even though I had the vinyl and first and second cd releases already. The quality of the new remasters is decent. The bonus live, eh. The music is timeless. What a group of original musicians. Talk about teamwork too. Rush isn’t Rush without any one member and Neil Pert is Sorely missed. Thanks again for the memories Catcher. |

Yes, great memories!! My first cassette deck was one of those top loading Superscope decks, bought at Pacific Stereo in So Cal around '75/76. I only had it for one summer as our house got broken into and all my stereo gear was stolen. Luckily the tapes were left alone.....The last deck I had was an Akai GX F31, that deck was amazing and I had it for about 20 years, it died on me about 10yrs ago. If I can find another one, I may buy it..... I had all of my Rush albums on cassette, each album as well as tons of "Rush Mix Jams", I'm sure I had 30 tapes of just Rush. I was not much into Maxell as I was into TDK and for metal IV it was Denon and Sony tapes, the Denon's were really good but kinda spendy. I think the Rush reissues from 2015 are very good, Sean Magee remastered them all at Abbey Road and are cut DMM, some people do not like DMM as they can be a bit thin in the bass. For example I always thought Presto lacked in the bass region and the reissue also shows that, but Sean kept to the original mix so can't complain. The only 2015 reissue I am missing is Test For Echo, it goes for $250+ on secondary market I keep my eye out for one but not holding my breath....It's out of print now. ^ I loved Maxell chrome tapes too. There was a brand over here, it must have been Chinese, called SMAT. I loved their black cases and their neat sound. I wasn't too much of an audiophile. Instead I had to focus on economy, and those SMAT cassettes were quite sturdy, and kept an acceptable quality even if recorded over and over again
And my first Rush albums were on original cassettes too, from 2112 onto Counterparts. Exit Stage Left and Archives were my only vinyls. My copy of A Show of Hands was not original, but I had the original VHS, although that one has a different setlist.

I still have one Memorex Metal tape (dubbed). Those were expensive back then! I usually bought TDK and Maxell high bias multi-packs. I still have a few left, including a sealed Maxell XL-II 90. Maybe I'll use it if/when I buy a new cassette deck.

Hey, is anyone else here a member of The Rush Forum (therushforum.com)?
Any idea why the site is still down after the scheduled maintenance was supposed to have finished?

Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

I am, but no idea. It's been down since first thing this morning for me (UK). Sad too to see TNMS has permanently gone offline.

I'm on there (new world man). I wasn't aware the site was down. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of prog fans on there though. Most Rush fans (on there at least) seem to be into heavy metal stuff or anything metal related.

Absolutely love this guy as well. His channel is awesome. Also Jose I love when he visits new music’s top 15 on Spotify. He has some pretty choice words to say about that auto tune garbage. |

Your not kidding on auto tune as well playing live in a recording studio, not something that happens today.....I think he is being kind sometimes when he listens to those Top streamed tunes. His interviews are very good also, I really enjoy the one he did with Sting about a month ago.

No joke, I was watching that on my TV the other night! I couldn't believe what it turned out to be. I thought it was going to be a more obvious choice. Beato has so many great videos. I do love his WMTSG? breakdown of Van Halen's "Jump."
