@I prophesy disaster says "The following three tracks are somewhat related to these three current disasters" but doesn't say how he's feeling. @Cristi posts a video but says nothing. I was expecting a little more. Am I wrong?

what do you want me to say? I had this song stuck in my head and i posted it. If it does not fit the theme, I'm gonna delete it then, maybe come up with another song, maybe sit this theme out. Better? Ouch

Thanks, it’s much appreciated. I’ve wanted to join in past ones, and really wanted to do my own poll before, but circumstances meant that I couldn’t confidently and comfortably commit to even the bare minimum of the expected participative process. — certainly not in a timely manner.

Wasn't trying to be too critical, just trying to understand.

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

I'm generally in favour of a generous interpretation of thread themes, in this one in particular. The general situation is worrying enough (which led me to ditching my original idea for this thread), so let's have peace among us at least, and let's listen to the music that everyone is contributing, for which I am very grateful!

@JD: I appreciate your thinking and interpretation of the theme, but please let it influence your choices (which I suppose are it has alreadyThumbs Up) rather than questioning others.

Regarding my mention of Radiohead's "Daydreaming", I said "No matter how known, this song best reflects my feelings now" which doesn't explain how it reflects my feelings and I didn't want to state the feelings. That said, it reflects certain feelings of alienation, loss, guilt, moving through life. and a certain futility when trying to serve, and that somehow it all feels illusory, unreal, like a daydream. Things do feel dreamlike now, like a rather subdued melancholic and fuzzy not quite reality. It's like I'm sleepwalking. Sleepwalking through life, sleepwalking in the moment....

Right now, I'm feeling this (The Rocky Horror Picture Show - I'm Going Home)

I wish I were going home to stay, but home feels like a memory to me -- a bittersweet memory. Feeling nostalgic.

I don't like to consciously analyse music often, or why it resonates with me. Reviewing, for instance, can kill the resonance and the deeper meaning, which is really ineffable. And if one tries to explain it to another, it's not like another can understand the way you do, or feel quite the way you do no matter how empathetic the person is and no matter how understanding the compassionate person tries to be. SO ultimately trying to explain can feel like a quite superficial and futile masterbatory exercise. Music resonates very deeply within me, but trying to explain it, the emotional states, is deeply unsatisfying most of the time and often embarrassing.

I don’t think JD was questioning whether or not the song fits the theme, so much as wondering how. I have songs stuck in my head all the time, but that doesn’t mean they are necessarily a reflection of how I’m feeling.

I think the only thing JD was wondering was why you posted a song with absolutely no detail about why. I definitely had no issue with the videos posted by I prophesy disaster, because I thought the feelings were rather obvious, based upon his choices, and his words.

I have no particularly issue with your choice either, but the feelings are certainly not at all obvious, and particularly when you offered no explanation.

But ultimately, this IP seems to be about appreciating whatever music we are feeling at the moment, and I don’t think words are necessary. I like the idea of simply listening to whatever is offered, without prejudice, or without expecting elucidation. There is no need for you to delete your song, nor choose another, nor sit this theme out. Unless, of course, that is what you prefer.

Exactly - explaining is by no means necessary.

Agreed, music can speak for itself, if one doesn't care to elaborate.  It's one of it's special charms.

Sure, but it also speaks differently to different individuals as our brains interpret the sounds differently, bring different personalities, emotions, experiences and associations, psychological and physiological differences. I agree there should be no expectation to try to explain, and in trying to explain, that doesn’t mean the person will be able to feel the music as you do or even understand your feelings on a deep level. Hard to even translate those feelings often, and it becomes a quite superficial exercise.

Well-expressed as usual, a very thoughtful post, and that appeals to me too.

One that resonates with my feelings now, I will keep some air of mystery by not explsing now, and sorry that I have mentioned this in polls of mine. Christian knows this, not sure how many here do.

Out of competition.

Unfortunately I'm quite busy atm. This is a rather complex topic and I dont't have time to do much research. But this is what crossed my mind when I read the theme description. So those of you who are interested and got a little time may listen to this masterpiece by the grande dame of contemporary classical music, Sofia Gubaidulina. "In tempus praesens" is here performed by Anne-Sophie Mutter and the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Velery Gergiev.

I think the music speaks for itself, but I will try to add a few details if I can.

I should say that I was one of the lucky ones. Although the weather station a few kilometres from where I live recorded 634mm (just over 2 feet) over three days, 275mm (just under 11 inches) on the first day, there was no flooding at my home. And I was able to drive to the supermarket without encountering flooded roads. Thus it would appear that the suburb where I live is quite well drained. But other people were not so lucky. Some places received much higher rainfall, or they were close to rivers that broke their banks. At least ten people lost their lives.

Very busy week for me, but have listened once now, to all of page one.  Here ya go:

Christian:  The Grassy Knoll “Unbelievable Truth”  Wailing saxophone after the initial steady drum beat and washy background sound set the stage.  Feels like mass confustion is happening inside someone’s mind, to me, of hearing something almost unbelievable, but realizing it is indeed true.

Lorenzo:  Piccola Orchestra Avion Travel “Sentimento”  Sounds very pleasant to begin, has a sense of melancholy, nonetheless, or perhaps a wish to return to the time in the singer’s mind.  Paolo Conte “Novecento”  Not visible to me, so found this one on YT, 3:36 time and with a 900 front cover.  This one has a circus-y beginning, kind of light fluty sounds and a lilting beat.  Horns with a sort of announcement feel to them.  Delivered with a bit of a laugh in the voice here and there.  Perhaps a bit of irony in the tune?

Özgür:  Falconer “The Clarion Call”  Metal guitars start the tune (metal kinda goes with war themes, no?).  A sad commentary that is still true today, perhaps even more so, lyrically.  A driving metal song, musically.

Nick:  Nordic Giants “Dark Clouds Mean War”  Just found this band, I think, thanks to you, Nick.  Purchased their latest.  This video shows their live performance, which they are acclaimed for, from what I’ve read about them.  Prog really does justice to feelings of despair and anxiety, doesn’t it? Those minor chord washes are so emotional, and the bleak piano by itself with the voiceover, as well.  Giorgi Mikadze “Moaning, from the Georgian Microjamz”  This begins very jarringly and very electric (after listening to Kees’ selection).  And fitting for the piece, as it is obviously a very jarring time in the composer’s time, a quiet keening.  The electric piano and guitar are very discordant and erratic (especially the guitar), with irregular drumbeats crashing in.  Fades to just the piano and a synth, with drums in the next section.  The vocalist returns to the fray as the instruments continue with the dirge and the piece comes to an end, almost unresolved, to my ear.  Which is perhaps true, as the grief will never really end.

Kees:  Lluís Llach  “Campanades a morts” After the intro and the chant from the audience, strings begin and a solemn bell tolls, leading to drumbeats and soft horns in a march, to die down and allow the singer/pianist his spotlight, soft orchestral touches accompanying his impassioned vocals.  In the second movement, a choir joins in on, with more soft orchestration, which comes to a crescendo, then back to just the piano and vocal. Woodwinds and strings continue with the melody.  Next, Lluís stands and sings, forgoing piano and chorus joins in again and concludes, with the piece ending in sad triumph and the bells once again.  There is so much grief in this piece, so very moving.

Firstly, thank you Nickie. As for your question in parantheses, I infer that you got the "war" vibe mostly because of the double-bass drums. This is too typical in power metal. I guess, you might be right. Jut look at the name of the genre: power metal. Hahah. But I tend to see it more like a power metal cliché. They always do that in this type of music, even when talking about the unicorns wandering peacefully. WinkLOL

Oh, wasn't commenting on if for that, just metal and weaponry have a long history.  :)
