Sorry, Catcher, but I have the impression that you could be more open for discussions,
or maybe just keep away if they don't interest you. My experience with you is not very long,
so sorry and please tell if this impression of mine is wrong. Smile

Can anybody remember the 'contemporary rock' label in the early 70s?  That was a kind of code for 'prog' but really 'prog' did not enter common parlance until the prog 'revival' of the early 80s, at least in the UK (by then, prog rock had become rather reactionary...)

I don't recall seeing it myself, but many say that the term progressive rock first came into media print sometime in 80s.

It's nice you vouch for Jose but it would be better if Jose responded himself.

David thanks for vouching for me. Much appreciated.

And thanks to all who had something worthwhile to add to this topic.

See my earlier post about the NME book from 1978 - it refers to progressive rock but not for the bands you might expect. Yes and ELP are called "techno-rock".

^ Ah OK, interesting.  I have also seen ELP described variously as heavy rock and heavy metal back in the day.  It was all rock back then - my formative tastes came from listening to Alan Freeman's Radio 1 rock show, and he played a very wide variety of 'rock'!

Chopper - "Techno-rock", really? Do you still own this book?
Can you please confirm this excerpt about Family, from the same book?

In 1968, the band moved [from Leicester] to London to record Music In A Doll's House the album, produced by Jimmy Miller and Dave Mason. Except for one song by Mason, the album was fullfilled with compositions by the band members and it was a surprisingly successful start - what established themselfs as one of half a dozen of leading bands at the British progressive rock scene in the beginning.
Then Family were joined the London underground scene (the contemporaries are the bands like Nice and Pink Floyd) where frantic aggressiveness of Chapman's performances increased their reputation as a concert attraction. Their former way of life was the subject of the novel "Groupie" by Jenny Fabian. (...)"

This is what I meant but the conflation of "progressive artists" with "progressive rock". It's not quite clear at this point in the 70s, especially since there was no definition of the genre..

I have the 1978 new edition - it says pretty much that about Family - "immediately establishing them as one of the half dozen most original bands on Britain's embryonic "progressive" (their quotes) rock scene.

For Yes, it says they and ELP are exponents of "flash" or "techno-rock", and then go on to call it "generally overblown and pretentious" but this is NME we're talking about.

Just to avoid confusion, "Progressive" in the title does NOT refer to music style/music genre.
All you need to do is google "Progressive talk radio in the United States". There is a whole article about it in Wiki.

I guessed that, it's due to our discussion here of the meaning of word "progressive", and thanks.

Thank you so much Chopper. I've never owned or read this book. It is very interesting.
Believe it or not "pretentious" was very often used to describe progressive rock music. I have a "Rock Encyclopedia" written in late 1980s by Polish music critic. The book was published in 1991. All most important British prog-rock bands are included in it, couple of them called "pretentious". Gentle Giant was one of them.

I can quite believe that the word "pretentious" was very often used to describe progressive rock music, and probably still is. Around this time NME was heavily into punk and new wave, Melody Maker was more of a prog music paper, I remember Yes, ELP, Genesis and their members used to regularly win the best band and musician polls in MM.

Oh wow, a blast from the past. Yes, I remember annual Melody Maker polls. They were published in Polish music magazine called Non-Stop. My older brother and I were always waiting for the MM polls with great anticipation.
ELP, Yes, Genesis together with LZ were on the top of MM polls in early 70s.
