I've been a fan of Tom Waits' for a long time. Rain Dogs is a Top 10 album for me. Probably Top 3 actually. 

In this poll there are his albums from 1983 Swordfishtrombones onwards. That's because I don't know his early albums well and, to be honest, I don't like the little I've heard of them. I'll probably try them again at some point but not today. If you have recommendations, I'd be grateful to hear them. 

Another big favourite of mine is Bone Machine. I sometimes think I might like it more than Rain Dogs, but I heard the 'Dogs first at a right time in my life. Then again there's also Marc Ribot's delicious guitar playing on it, so it might've become my favourite in any case. 

Starting with Mule Variations, I don't like his last albums that much. There are some absolute gems on each of them, but I get the feeling Tom's repeating himself. In any case, I'll always respect him immensely. 

Let us know your favourite album. Any discussion is welcome.

Swordfishtrombones is a good one. I think I'll give it a listen tonight.

I’ve only heard about half of these, but BoneMachine was my first exposure to his stuff - a friend got it when it was new, and I was surprised how modern and avant-edgy it sounded, as I’d always heard he was a piano-playing troubadour type (i.e. the early stuff). It’s still my favorite for that reason. I don’t listen to him that much, but those few I have do fulfill a certain mood/occasion (usually drunkenness, haha).

Bone Machine for me, just ahead of Rain Dogs and Swordfishtrombones. I like most of those albums, although I am less keen on Alice and Blood Money. Mule Variations and Real Gone could both have done with some editing - cut down to 10-12 tracks and a 40-50 minutes playing time both could have been up there with his best.

If you're not familiar with it, the 3 CD Orphans collection is well worth investigating.

Haven't listened to many of these (I prefer the 70's albums), but I'm glad to vote for Rain Dogs which was my introduction to Waits, and which would probably still be the winner if I listened to all the albums listed above.

I agree about Mule Variations and Dead Gone. Traditional album length (around 40 minutes) is the best almost without exceptions. 

I've heard Orphans but it didn't make a huge impression on me. Will have to listen to it again.
