This one was super hard for me, but finally went this way.  On a different day, it has a lot of potential for being different. Thanks to Mila for both the poll and the playlist and always, thank you to Lorenzo!  

Well done, everyone!  

1.  Mila: Late to the party, but this one was a bit mesmerizing for me.  Not familiar with the composer, btw (that I know of).  Despite it being live, I loved the piece without the visuals just as much (see my special mention to George, below).  John Zorn, Sofia Rei “Besos de Sangre”  Live performance here, beginning with acoustic guitar.  Superb female singer, the melody is sensual and haunting, melancholic. Vibes, then piano to the fore during the first bridge, adding to the eerie, wistful sound.  Excellent piece, very understated, almost missed it!

2.  Christian: Trilok Gurtu “Vignola”  I usually prefer Middle Eastern to Indian music, but I loved how this worked.  Indian fusion sort of sound, from the opening.  Chanting, steady beat and some whistles come in, very hypnotic, with also some bowed instruments.  Very, very pretty indeed.

3.  Anders:  Loved these (especially the 2nd one) for the visions they gave me of the sunny North.  Ryttarpolskan efter Erik Ljung "Kusen" Here is upbeat and complex fiddles starting off in unison.  You can just see the glaring white snows and feel your face getting red from the cold!  Polska från Enviken efter Röjås Jonas  Here is another in similar vein, but darker in tone.  Maybe they are getting close to a deep forest in the snow.  This one I prefer over the first, but both are lovely.

Of special mention is George's nomination, Ak Dan Gwang Chil “Yeong Jeong Geo RI."  It warred fiercely with me, in fact, I shared it on FB, since I found it super-engaging, however I loved it as much for the video as for the music, and tend to think of these polls as being strictly about the music, less visuals.

So far a very promising poll. First batch:

Lazuli: 9 Hands Around the Marimba
Interesting rhythmic patters and some great chords as well. There's a sudden abrupt change of mood and tempo around 3:00, but we're quickly back to where we started. It reminds me a bit of the mysterious Russian duo Dvar. Contender.

Indian music and rhythm are in general suitable for what is called "tribal house" and indeed, Gurtu even wrote a couple of dancable tracks, also in collaboration with Italian DJ and producer Robert Miles. Apart form that he's consiedered next to Zakir Hussain one of the best living tabla players and percussionists. In addition to his own work he collaborated with many jazz greats such as John McLaughlin, Charlie Mariano, Garbarek to name only a few.

I'm glad that you managed to listen to my last minute submission and to comment on it! It is a song that John Zorn wrote for a film. He appears in the video as a conductor. He's an extremely versatile musician. Is there any of his other work that particularly stood out for you ?

It's the first I've heard of him (that I knew of).  Turns out I've since seen his name 3 times today, in other places, lol.  That being said, his previous project of Electric Masada, I had heard of, now that I saw him mentioned elsewhere.  I've not looked into anything further than your submission.

Masada is a musical group with rotating personnel. Apart from Electric Masada there are other related projects, i.a. a string trio. Masada is also a songbook series written by Zorn. He is exploring his Jewish roots with the Masada songbook and groups in different ways. Zorn has had plenty of other musical projects in the past and present. He's an exceptional artist and there is much to discover beyond jazz.

Lazuli: 9 Hands Around the Marimba This is a very catchy and fun performance and obviously I like the sound of the marimba. However, from the point of view of the music in terms of composition I am less convinced. At some point the initial melody transitions to Gotye’s famous ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ which tells me that the show act, that is the multi-hand marimba playing is in the foreground here rather than the music itself. Yet I did realize that this is an outstanding band and I will for sure have a closer look at their discography.

Nicu Alifantis: Emotie de toamna A nostalgic, dreamy ballad in a style that I associate with East European singer-songwriter music traditions of the 1980s, early 90s. An elegant and harmonious composition and arrangement with a delicately selected instrumentation.

Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung: Werkende Mieren Now this is unique! An interesting and skilful amalgamation of various musical styles. With acoustic instruments such as violin, cello, clarinet, and accordion they add based on rock-driven patterns elements of klezmer and tango with a jazzy or even classical music undertone. An absolutely coherent and outstanding composition!

Trilok Gurtu: Vignola A soundscape full of magic created by one of the greatest modern day tabla players and percussionists. By weaving together subtle Indian rhythms and singing with modern jazz he creates a unique, almost spherical sound and atmosphere. Admittedly I know Gurtu mainly as a sideman of numerous jazz greats. Now it’s about time to take a closer listen to his own work!

Ak Dan Gwang Chil: Yeong Jeong Geo Ri Another very catchy act that I have discovered sometime ago. They bring together Korean traditional music and k-pop. It is a group consisting of three folk singers and a traditional ensemble of zithers, flutes, drums, and gongs. An immensely entertaining performance filled with positive energy! Not sure whether I would buy an album but I would certainly attend their concert if I ever get the chance.
