But as far as I can see, Grumpy, that doesn't tell much specific about the poles, and I already know that they are not to do without. Big smile

I guess I'm not understanding the issue. They are polls. You pick which album, song or band you like, the totals are summed up, and you mock the idiots who voted wrong.

I’m pretty sure they are about throwing tomatoes at 90125, which we fans of the 80s use to make a lovely tomato bisque.

I certainly don't, Grumpy. On the contrary, even not everything has been very fine between us, I somehow like you. Smile

Standard rules are it must be something you love that fits the category, usually you can offer up 3, sometimes lesser-known prog is allowed.  After listening, you can comment and discuss the selections (if you wish, and have time), then when notified, select which of your choices you want to subject to voting.

There's an Interactive Poll Team thread, where we handle whose turn it is, etc.

It's run differently than the "just vote for this or that," polls, and most just enjoy the sharing of music, as opposed for "winning."

When we have a prog poll to do in like manner, we put it up under "Prog Polls."

Thank you very much for this extensive explanation of the Interactive Polls, Snicolette, but I'm sorry to say that I'm used to listening to and having to do with albums, and not single songs. Anyway, best luck with it. Smile

My pleasure, David.  Sometimes people new to these polls think they're like the other ones in here, so was just differentiating between the two.

What is it about polls you don't understand? Are you being purposely obtuse or is this some sort of congenital comprehension issue? I know they have polls in Denmark. They are the same here. Except not in Danish. I'm sure there are even polls in English, Faroese, German and Greenlandic in Denmark.

After a brief Google search, I've learned that the Faroese term for poll is "spurnakanning". Would it make it easier for you if we referred to "polls" as "spurnakanning"? There is even a Facebook page devoted to spurnakanning. Not so surprisingly, the Facebook page is titled "Spurnakanning".

I think I'll call my next band Spurnakanning. And then make a poll here to see if the Faroese folk like the music. I really want to corner the Faroese market. First Faro, then Greenland. Yep, I'm going for North Atlantic domination.

Adapted from The American Historical Association

Quote What Types of Information Can Polls Find?

The polls can find out what people are thinking about important public questions, such as which is better, Yes or Genesis? According to their champions, the polls are fact-finding devices which help to keep the public well informed about topics of interest such as which is considered better, Yes or Genesis? The polls can keep the public in touch with important shifts in public opinion, such as if there has been a reversal in Genesis or Yes popularity when comparing those bands, and therefore in the shifts of forces which decide where the political and social power in this forum lies. And just as he who controls the spice controls the universe, he who can control the Yes vs. Genesis polls can control the forum.

Polls come in different forms, cover different topics, ask different questions and have different reasons for being. At this board we have polls on music and non-music. We have polls asking for favourites, asking for least favourites, asking for best, second best and more. It's a way of gauging opinions and collecting data. It's a record of opinion.

I have enjoyed making polls as a way of list making, sharing my favourites, as a kind of a creative exercise even if not that creative, a way of passing the time, and very often as an accessory to discussion. I usually haven't cared much about the results themselves. Often I have done it in the hopes of exposing people to music I like and in turn being exposed to music, and in the hopes of connecting with others who have similar appreciations (a communal exercise). I have done polls of contrast and similarities. Sometime I have covered music I don't much like for diversity sake and to hopefully bring different audience together in the same thread.

I like posting in people's polls as a way of sharing what I like, my thoughts, and hopefully to connect with others and gain new perspective. It is the conversation that goes with the poll that often is more interesting to me, but I do find seeing people's lists interesting and helps me to get a feel for others tastes and interests. Some people like the contest/ games types of polls most, but I don't treat mine as contests. I fid having a poll as an accessory to discussion can help to better focus a topic and add another element or layer to it. Not really sure what the issue is, or quite what you are looking for.

Hi,

Not to mention a lot of idiocies!

But they help folks remember things with one exception. They heard one album 10 times, and the next ten albums less than half of it, and then they can't possibly learn and appreciate these next ten choices.

If the polls are less "selective" about some content, like some of them intentionally leave out some bands and their work, because they have not been heard properly ... then I tend to not participate, since the idea is just to promote the better known and what I (sometimes) think might be better all around.

All in all, the polls are fine with me, although I do not like to look at my collection of 3k titles and think ... this one is better than that one ... EVER ... because if that were the case they would not be here ... PERIOD.

Favoritism, sometimes, has a tendency to downplay the music itself ... and to say that you prefer Mozart to Beethoven, in here on these polls is almost like saying ... they haven't heard Beethoven much anyway, beyond a couple of chords to start a piece or two! And that hurts the polls in my book, and I wish it was more "inclusive" rather than it being just a choice between 2 or 3 things that are ... not as good as many others, but I supposed that 60 years of music listening is a different experience to a newbie that has been at it for 20 and only discovered "progressive" 10 years ago!

It all differs ... and I wish I had a better way of saying!

The polls are fine, but most of them are not for me! I don't listen to music for "fun" ... I listen to it, because it colors my mind, my body and my soul ... and that has nothing to do with popularity, or polls or the preferences that are seen here.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
