Liking it is a specific criteria.

Cristi's right. The specific criteria is whether I like an album or not after the first listen. By the way, I've only ever given a dismal 1-star rating to just one absolutely dreadful album... 1970: Robert Wyatt - The End of an Ear It's the first and last time I've ever listened to Robert Wyatt.

But you might had becomed so trained with your evaluation so you instinctively can do it with high critic quality.

I've asked about it because I've been thinking lately about possibilities of somehow objective criteria for rating, and I'm thinking about starting a thread with this topic. Btw, according to my English dictionary, criteria is the plural form while criterion is the singular.

"very good critic quality"? Who cares? Do I need the approval of some critic to enjoy music? I don't think so. If I feel good listening to any kind of music, then that's that, I feel good. I don't get it...

I agree, Cristi, and I was just kidding. So, for me it's absolutely no problem how Paul rates the albums he lists - even I think it would be good if the readers were aware of it. But I still find it interesting how it is concerning the possibilities of somehow (of course only partly) objective rating.

Just for the record, I should have written "intuitively" in stead of "instinctively".

Btw, Cristi, do you write any reviews? Has PA written somewhere a detailed definition of rating grading? And Paul, I find it still interesting on what basis you rate albums, because you do it of course on some basis - it can't be otherwise. Edited by David_D - February 04 2022 at 03:47 |

Yes, i wrote some reviews in the past. Obviously there is a rating system, not perfect, but here it is: Essential: a masterpiece of progressive rock music
Excellent addition to any prog rock music collection Good, but non-essential Collectors/fans only Poor. Only for completionists |

I've seen this rating description, Cristi, and was thinking about a more detailed definition of the rating grades. About your reviews, can you tell me a bit about how you rated, on what basis? Edited by David_D - February 04 2022 at 05:15 |

on what basis? My own enjoyment of the music first of all. Then my thoughts on the songwriting and performance. That's all.

Yes, there's No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed for rating and reviewing albums. |

I didn't mean that, just that we're all subjective when rating and reviewing and that's fine.

I totally agree, Paul, as long everbody is aware of that then it's just very subjective rating, or just what due to some reasons one like or think. But another theoretical possibility is that rating can be done partly using some "objective" criteria, and I'm just interested in that kind of possibility - nothing else, don't get me wrong.

You've mentioned two, songwriting and performance, it might be "composition", "creativity", "originality", ability to reflect the Zeitgeist. I don't remember exactly, I just know that some Prog magazines when making reviews and ratings have used some criteria which can be said to give the rating to some degree character of objectivity. That is at least an opinion some people find to be true, and I'm interested in hearing some more about that opinion.
