They can even keep it up for live sets that are around 3 hours long and all of their incredible studio albums, never running out of brilliant ideas, experimental work, concepts and best of all, a huge range of the most incredible, original and challenging musician work ever!

Only Portnoy, Petrucci and Myung attended Berkley, and they all dropped out after a year since they were making it big elsewhere, but totally agree that they are well ahead of the field in terms of technical ability, but in their absence I voted for Yes (and I'm only 19)

A very wise decision Metropolis. My daughter's 17 totally into prog and has already seen lots of bands. The names you mentioned are very good musicians, but Yes are the masters of all and always have, and will be, even well into their 60's, but, great to see youth as you into the very best of music.

I chose Pink Floyd, because of

1. Rick Wright - was the most universal keyboardist
of all listed, while Wakeman, Banks and Emerson
where playing ditties with their electronics, Rick was
already creating atmospheres and soundscapes.

2. David Gilmore - his psychedelic licks deserved
center stage in the biggest progressive band of all
time.

3. Roger Waters - bass was more of a musical
barometer than squeezing out notes as well as a
vocalist that could write epics and concept albums.

4. Nick Mason - drummer with uncanny nack to pull it
all together.

a nod over ELP and Yes, with Gentle Giant the most
advanced with difficult time changes and bizarre
vocal arrangements.

I'm with richardw here: there has never been a band of better, more versatile and virtuosic - the word specifically used by the creator of this thread - musicians than Gentle Giant.  Does this mean Kerry Minnear is better than Rick Wakeman?  No, but it doesn't have to.  It simply means that Minnear is not only an excellent all-around, virtuoso keyboardist, but that his playing, style, etc. "fit" with GG as well as anything Wakeman did with Yes.  The same for all the other musicians in GG.  And let's not forget that each of them is a multi-instrumentalist, with Minnear playing keys, cello, vibes, recorder, glockenspeil, percussion - all at virtuoso level - and all the others playing at least five instruments at very high if not virtuosic levels.

Thus, my order would be:

Gentle Giant
Yes (Anderson, Bruford, Howe, Squire, Wakeman)
ELP
UK (w/Bruford, not Bozzio)
Genesis (circa Selling England and The Lamb)

I also notice that only english-speaking bands are represented.  Personally, I think the musicians in Deus ex Machina are easily equal to anyone represented in the poll.  Again, based on the word "virtuoso" used by the creator of the thread.

Peace.

LOL

Disco comes from the 70s. Punk too.

Lots of good music, sure -- but plenty of mindless, irritating radio crap, too.

Thermonuclear war threatened us all -- that felt more terrifying, or depressing, than amazing -- at least to me.

We weren't all (3F excepted) running off to San Francisco, naked but for the flowers in our hair, you know. We went to school. We worked. We got killed in Vietnam. Our parents were likely stricter than yours, too.

It mostly felt pretty normal and mundane at the time.Stern Smile

Now the 60s, on the other hand, were one big acid-dropping orgy/love in! All was bliss! Even cats and dogs used to get along....Wink

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

Why everybody forgets about Steve Hackett, by large the prog' guitarist with better and more solo works.

Hackett is by far more versatile than Howe, if you notice Howe has played Your Move and Clap as hsi solo pieces for more than 30 years in each and every concert without change, as if he hadn't anything more to impress the audience.

Hes an awesome player but  believe me neither of both tracks is really a challenging piece, both are in fact very simple, no comparison with Horizons and the two solo works Hackett plays in each cocert, because he hardly repeats a piece.

My two cents.

Iván

Surely you jest... First .. Keith was like a combination of Tony Kaye, Rick Wakeman & Patrick Moraz all in one.  He could handle a Hammond, any synth, and a grand piano... and even a grand piano spinning around in the air... never heard Tony or Rick do much decent piano work, and Patrick could do piano but wasn't all that great on a hammond... neither could Rick or Tony... so there is no way that any keyboardiest from Yes could compare talent wise to Keith Emerson...

Second - Greg Lake - played bass, lead guitar and acoustic... sometimes all in one song... and he sang all the vocals (like an angel, no less). He had the hardest working guitar roadie in the business.  Never saw Steve Howe play bass, or Chris Squire play lead or acousitc.. and both of them have no vocal talent... they just don't have the talent or the flexibility that Greg has.  Then Jon Anderson's vocals sound like he's on helium or at least wearing extremely tight underwear most the time.  So thats 3 guys in Yes that can't compare to Greg.

Then there's Carl.  Carl's just amazing... I think he's an alien, he has the fasted one handed drum roll I've ever seen... he's been classically trained on all percussion instruments including concert tympani, the glockenspiel, the xylophone, gongs, bells, etc, etc... He plays with more emotion than I've ever seen Alan or Bill play with.  I think thats one of the main things that I know... you feel him when he plays... its emotional.

So you guys can vote for your favorite bands... but I know that technically and emotionally... ELP will always be the best!!

And of course, the best looking group as well!!!!!!!!!!!!

several of Rick Wakemans keyboards, synthesizers
and samplers were built and demostrated by Larry
Fast of Nektar. Why is he not included as part of
Peter Gabriels band?

I went with the mass and chose Yes. They're all fantastic musicians. ELP came a VERY close second!
In a way, I was almost tempted to choose Asia because Steve Howe was an amazing guitarist, Carl Palmer THE great drummer, Geoff Downes was a more than adequate keyboardist (but no Wakeman or Emerson) and John Wetton was a brilliant bassist/singer, and I am a great admirer of what he did with UK, Roxy Music and King Crimson.
I went for Yes however, because even though Asia had a ton of talent it was most definitely never realised in a Prog sense (but I do like them as a melodic rock band...NOT Prog!)
And Jesus said unto John, "come forth and receive eternal life..."
Unfortunately, John came fifth and was stuck with a toaster.

It's all about opinions but DallasBryan - Richard Wright ?? - Wakeman could outplay him with his feet !!!!

Wright is effective but nothing he does with Floyd puts him on a par with virtually any other prog keyboardist (except perhaps Kaye).....

Everyone is entitled to an opinion.............but some people abuse that freedom.Wink

Alex Lifeson is just along for the ride?????????????????????????Ermm

This place gets more and more surreal every day!

LOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOL

Couldn't agree more!! Alex Lifeson is a very skilled musician, as skilled as the other two at what he does. He gets overshadowed by the other two not because he is not as good, but because not many bass players and drummers are as obviously brilliant as Lee and Peart.

In the absence of Rush I voted Yes, but considered voting ELP.

Neither Yes or ELP are among my favourite bands, but there is no disputing the immense talent of Wakeman and Emmerson.

first, i must say that my vote is for RUSH
as to your comment on Lifeson, I don't think its that he's along for the ride so much in terms of riding on the skill of Lee and Peart, Lifeson is an outstanding guitarist in his own right and the band definitely wouldn't be the band it was/is without him... despite that, I do agree with you in the sense that he doesn't contribute to the band creatively speaking. I think he's just one of those guys who wants to bust out a mad solo... whether he had been playing in Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, or Rush... I mean, he stands out among his band members. While his band members write and read deep philosophy, peart in particular, he's getting arrested for assaulting a cop in florida while drunk.

btw, i got geddy lee's solo album in the mail finally today... i'll make a post in the CD section later once i get through it.

Lifeson writes most of the music.............................doesn't contribute creatively?????

Something seriously wrong amongst the Rush "fans" around here!!!!!!

Confused

really? i thought lee did...

Are you for real or just trying to yank my chain ?

Lifeson writes most of the music in collaboration with Lee!Confused

How long did you say you's been a Rush fan?Dead

Well I know they write the music together, I was just under the impression from what I've read in the past that Lee wrote most of the music as opposed to Lifeson...

I first discovered the band this summer. Now I own Fly By Night, Caress, 2112, Farewell, Hemispheres, Waves, Pictures, Signals, GUP, Hold Your Fire, and Counterparts

Shocked

I first discovered Rush in Summer-the Summer of 1975.........Confused
