I’m really digging the Different Stages 3 CD RELEASE back from the early 2000’s.
I highly recommend this set. Covers a 20 year span of live performances. (1977-1997) People need to hear Neil Peart’s drum solo called The Rhythm method. https://youtu.be/Ies3DkRbe-Q |

I want to find some time for a Rush marathon, or at least a mini marathon.

I might just do the same honestly. Especially for some of the more underrated albums like Grace Under Pressure and Caress of Steel

I first saw the Rhythm Method on the Presto tour in Maryland 1990, that was my wife's first Rush concert....I think it was my 3rd. Different Stages is an excellent package.

These isolated drum videos are great, you hear such a different vibe. I hear some jazzy, fusion stuff going on. Edited by Catcher10 - January 30 2022 at 19:44 |

At first I liked it but thinking about it I don't really see the point of it. I mean they were going to play all those songs in their entirety anyway right?

It's about the creativity of how they started this tour, you can call it an overture if you like or a preview of what's to come. I am not 100% sure that they played all of the songs they previewed in the opening section.....but it flows so nicely into the start of Spirit of Radio. These three guys always pushed themselves to be different. Awesome....

Not a "twenty-year span": Different Stages (released in 1998) is taken mainly from the 1997 Test for Echo tour, with three songs from the 1994 Counterparts tour. The third (bonus) disc is their 1978 performance at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. P.S. I also recommend it. I've enjoyed it since, well, 1998!

Well, their presentation was certainly different and imo that's where they thought the most outside of the box (well much of Neil's lyrics too). How many bands were putting on costumes and doing little acting skits on a video screen for the fans to see before their concerts? None that I can think of. Or what about having washing machines on stage? Who else would even think of that? I don't think musicially they ever did much that wasn't done before but to be fair no one did it quite like Rush did that's for sure.

Didn't they have popcorn makers on stage with one tour? I seem to recall them making popcorn and giving it the fans near the front...but I could be misremembering.

With Neil you got the double whammy. Not only was he a great drummer but a great lyricist as well. The guy read a ton (presumably during downtime much of the time). He also travelled a lot (on his motorcyle, on bike or in a car). Just an amazing guy all around imo. The rest of Rush were great musicians too. I always thought it was interesting that Geddy is such a big baseball fan. I think he's a big wine collector too. Alex plays golf but not sure what else. Lol.

^ The eternal question is what their writing process was-- did Neil write lyrics after Lee & Lifeson composed music, did he write the words first and then the other two composed around them, or some mysterious combination?
