@Mila: I like your "multi-instrumentalist" idea and I'm already thinking of an artist that might fit the bill. I'm less inspired regarding the "acoustic songs" theme, but I can see the interest of it. I'm just not approaching/listening to music with a "acoustic/non-acoustic" dividing principle in my head, so it would need a bit more of thinking (which doesn't hurt, yet)...

Choosing songs where one musician plays almost all musical instruments narrows the choice too much. And choosing two songs where a musician from a band plays two different musical instruments makes the search even more difficult, a treasure hunt. The only solution is to choose one song where a musician plays at least two musical instruments. Already so you I have to do a good search.

^ The multi-instrumentalist idea made me think of songs from musicians that play several instruments on an album. Like for example Dan Swano that did the debut Nightingale album all by himself. Or Geddy Lee that played bass, Keyboards, pedals and sang, something like that...

^^ As I understand it, it is about choosing an artist (solo or in a band) and a couple of songs/pieces that illustrate his instrumental prowess... So that can be very wide ranging, actually.

Or a track in which somebody plays several instruments?

Ok, then let's do the 'acoustic music' theme. I'm not sure about whether or not PA listed bands should be excluded as well, given that there was such a poll in the prog section sometime ago. As for doing the polls based on videos I would suggest to find a different solution. The simplest way would be to post all links on the first page of the poll before the voting starts (bandcamp, soundcloud, spotify, a mp3 dropbox maybe, etc.). |

That's exactly what I meant! I don't think that this should be a problem. If someone has a song where an artist plays several instruments, as part of a band or solo, he/she could even introduce a second artist through the remaining two songs. Edited by Mila-13 - January 29 2022 at 05:19 |

What I meant, even youtube has its limits, when trying to find good quality videos, let's not forget that. (It's not like we listen and post here obvious famous mainstream music.) I do not use spotify. I also have never used mp3 dropbox, I don't know what that is.

I know what you are talking about, that's why I suggested a couple of different solutions. Posting the links of the nominated songs on the front page of the poll whatever their source may be, would be the simplest solution imo. Edited by Mila-13 - January 29 2022 at 05:27 |

You misunderstood. It's not that I don't know how to post, resources become limited if anyone tries to post a less famous artist. There were for instance a couple of Romanian bands/musicians I was looking for on youtube, and unfortunately there were either no videos or some not so good quality. That kind of situation.

I see, but it is still more likely to find less-known artist if you are not limited to just one source (youtube). Mp3 is another option but that would work only if you have it on cd. I could also upload the mp3 to youtube for you by the way.

Upload videos to youtube?! I'll have to make a second youtube channel for that, need to learn how to to do it and so on. Not gonna complicate myself with that now. Yeah, maybe bandcamp would be a second resource (if necessary), but other than that, whatever I find youtube will do.

It seems to me that we are discussing so many possibilities, which makes it all rather tiring.
I think it's worth deciding if you want the poll on acoustic songs or on multi-instrumentalists. In the first case, it's really easy to find songs for everyone. Do we want to choose that one? Or do we want to choose the one on the multi-instrumentalists? In the second case, the situation is more complex. Do you want to choose a song where a musician plays two or three or more instruments? Or do you want to choose two songs? If you choose two songs, as has happened in some poll, you have to spend a lot of time listening, especially if prog songs or songs without time limits are allowed (I am always in favor of time limits because it is difficult to vote for songs of 3 minutes togethet to others of 12 minutes). Then you should choose the limits in the widest possible way because it doesn't seem so easy to me to find two songs where, for example, the same artist who wrote the piece plays only the guitar in one and only the piano in another. I should think about it. Mila gives me the example of Branduardi, a violinist present here on Pa: it is not easy to know when he plays the guitar in a song without a violin. Usually other guitarists who collaborate with him play it. Springsteen on two of his albums plays guitars, piano and keyboards, bass and harmonica. But he does it on almost every song, which pair of songs should I choose? I should choose one without harmonica and one with harmonica, I suppose. In my opinion it would be easier to choose a single song where a musician (it doesn't matter if the author of the song or one of his collaborators or a session man) plays two or three instruments. Anyway, I don't want to set limits, I just say to Mila that now it's time to make a choice and if you want a poll with two songs please specify precisely the terms. |

I don't think that such a detailed description is really necessary tbh. Most people did understand my idea. I'm quite busy atm so for now I'll better stick with the 'acoustic music' theme and leave the other topic for next time. I'll start the poll later this evening if possible, otherwise tomorrow morning. The voting in the other poll has only just begun, anyway.

Hello folks:
Mila has asked for final selections to be made by tomorrow morning, so I've contacted Logan to see if he's available to host the next round. If he is not, Özgür (Shadowyzard) is up next, also subject to availability. I will keep everyone posted.

Shadowyzard/Archisorcerus hasn't participated in a very long time, send him a PM and ask him if he wants to participate.
