Fat Les - Vindaloo Vindaloo was a #2 UK single in 1998 and was written as a parody of football anthems, but has since been adopted as a popular anthem of its own. The video is fun and noteworthy as a parody of the Verve's video of their massive hit Bitter Sweet Symphony. Same here. And the first songs I thought of for food were mostly humorous or laced with innuendo (as my choices represent). Drinking can be more 'serious' as a framework for a song.

I have three that I really enjoy. I was going to include King Crimson's "Cat Food", but that is very prog. So here we go....
The first is The Beatles "Savoy Truffle", George Harrison's paean to Eric Clapton's inveterate sweet tooth at the time of the recording. Harrison basically reads off the different flavors of a chocolate box that Eric was snacking on. One of the most underrated and endearing tunes on The White Album. Next, Led Zeppelin's "Custard Pie". Ostensibly about a slice of a dessert confection; however, I'm quite sure Plant and Page were in the realm of double entendre with the reference.  In any case, Plant's underrated ability on the blues harp is showcased.And since I'm on about underrated music, here's one from Sting -- "Soul Cake", from the enjoyable Christmas/Winter-themed album If On A Winter's Night... (and thus a nod to one of my favorite novels, Italo Calvini's If on a winter's night a traveler). Traditionally, "soul cakes" are small round cakes made to commemorate the dead, and are given to children and the poor who go door to door on Hallowtide, singing and saying prayers for the souls of the dear departed. |

Such a funny lyric of someone leaving the cake out in the rain. Really pretty delightful for it’s incongruity. Yusuf/Cat Stevens “Was Dog A Doughnut? (ft
Chick Corea)” Here we have Cat Stevens
going a bit electronica. Dog bark enters
intermittently with staccato keys and whirly, jazzy keys. The Presidents of the United States of
America “Peaches” Alt/punk/grunge outfit
bring slightly tongue-in-cheek song. In
the video, the country is full of ninjas, oh no! Somehow this song reminds me of early
Grateful Dead in a way, when they had shorter songs, that is. Lots of fun stuff here, JD, thanks for the
poll and your selections!
Easy Money: James Brown “Mother Popcorn Pt. 1 & 2” Here we have the Godfather of Soul with a punchy, funky piece. Lots of horns a’poppin’ and quite the groove with James signature style written all over it. Plenty of his “uh’s,” and “good God’s.” Snappy bass and steady drums keep it all in one place. Punchy sax solo, with James scatting on top all throughout. Millie Small “My Boy Lollipop” This one I remember from the time! Right when music was really changing and the British Invasion was coming. I can see my older sisters ratting their hair and dancing in the living room to this and others like it. Fun to hear it again. Lorenzo: The Mission “The Grapes of Wrath” And now for something completely different. A moving ballad essentially telling the tale of migrant workers in the US. I have lived in the area that so many of these people came to and about which Steinbeck wrote his classic novel. Beautifully done. (Out of Competition) The Beatles “Savoy Truffle” was the first song that popped into my mind, a gem of a track from The White Album. George wrote some great, inventive stuff. Christian: Mary Coughlan “Ice Cream Man” Another more serious piece, bluesy and soulful, even a sense of pop to it. Bluesy guitar lead punctuates the piece about halfway in. Full vocal chorus chimes in on the chorus. There is a sense of theatre in this to me, too, in the production. Really an intriguing piece, Christian. Spliff “Carbonara” Ska/Reggae type beat at the beginning. Sort of stilted vocal in the period of the time, not understanding the words, I’m thinking a sense of the absurd, possibly. I can get some of the gist with words without a translation. Ah, yes a bit of a lark, as it turns out. I am noticing how many funny songs there are re food with this poll never thought of it before. Kees: Yes, I wish I felt able one I’ve brought before, Cheryl Wheeler’s “Potato.” However, here we are. Pé Daalemmer & Rooie Rinus “Worst” Live recording here, another funny one, actually reminds me of “Potato,” as they are going through a list of things to go with sausages. Funny they want pretty healthy sides with a probably not-so-healthy choice for a meal. Novelty song, these usually do go well with live audiences, and this proves to do so as well. I like the guitar solo 2/3rds in. |

First thoughts on Page Two Entries and some additional courses.
George: The Tubes “Sushi Girl” The Tubes
were quite the rage when I lived in Santa Cruz the first time, hailing from San
Francisco. I can’t say I remember this
piece, though. Super production on this,
of course a tongue-in-cheek one, as per their usual. Has that forward-sounding
80’s sound, as I recall sushi was the new thing back then. Fat Les “Vindaloo” I’m expecting something spicy here. Here is a sort of arena-style chorus going
on, with a spoken vocal set to a march beat.
Kids join in on the chorus. Heavy
bass line as more people join in on the pep rally/march to the stadium. Descendents “I Like Food” LOL
Punky/thrashy commentary, gets right to the point! 😊 Weird
Al “Eat It” Love Weird Al! And remember this very clever sendup of Michael
Jackson’s huge hit. Greg: The Beatles “Savoy Truffle” Very familiar with this one, it was the first one that came to mind for me, as noted in Lorenzo’s non-competition sharing on Page One. George was my favourite Beatle and he really did push a lot of boundaries with them, some wonderful huge hits, bringing world music to the band and also some very creative tunes such as this one. Led Zeppelin “Custard Pie” This one I also remember, it’s in the vein of some of their earlier forays, with a deep bow to the bluesy roots of the band. Sting “Soul Cake” New one to me and love the history, before I even hear it. Really enjoy this, the choral vocals arising are beautiful and the swift pastoral feel of the tune is very charming. Also like soft horns as they use them with the traditional Noels insertions. The embellishments of the fiddle(s) is/are delicious, brought back again in the small reel at the end. Thank you! rushfan4: Jimmy Buffett “Cheeseburger In Paradise” Definitely know this one, was played frequently in Santa Cruz fern bars back in the day. Really suited the small beachside community. Pretty funny guy! David Lee Roth “Hotdog and a Shake” Wastes no time in letting Vai shine. That Dave was also a pretty funny guy, I always felt he was great at poking fun at himself, in the bargain. Vai does a great job here, quite a fun romp. dr wu23: Tony Joe White “Poke Salad Annie” This was a huge hit growing up, one of those songs that was played all across the board. A classic! Lots of fun to hear it again, it is quite an earworm, no wonder it was a hit. Chomp chomp! :D Cristi: Editors “Sugar” Here we get some heaviness, I always like those kind of whangy guitars and what a great voice! Dark, yet sultry. Has a sense of despair in it. Sort of an almost Middle Easter vibe to the synths and guitars during the bridge. Well produced. I like this one a lot, Cristi. JD: The
Archies “Sugar, Sugar” I was a little
too old to enjoy this as a cartoon when it came out, but it had a lot of appeal
for young teens of the time. I did read
Archie and Jughead comics, we always got them when taking a plane
somewhere. I do remember the song
getting plenty of airplay on LA stations like KHJ and the like. The song that you find in the dictionary when
you look up “Bubblegum Music.” 😊 Lorenzo: Pino Daniele “Fatte 'Na Pizza” Fun kind
of funk song with lots of barre chords, sung in a passionate, yet almost
sarcastic manner, I was surprised by the lyrics in English when I looked them
up, actually some seriousness to the piece.
Kind of a rap near the end. The Italians often surprise me! I actually caught the next video, which was a
lovely guitar cover of a song of his, “ Appocundria,” afterwards. |
