Interactive Poll - What’s Cookin' ?

Easy Money:  James Brown “Mother Popcorn Pt. 1 & 2”  Here we have the Godfather of Soul with a punchy, funky  piece.  Lots of horns a’poppin’ and quite the groove with James signature style written all over it.  Plenty of his “uh’s,” and “good God’s.”  Snappy bass and steady drums keep it all in one place.  Punchy sax solo, with James scatting on top all throughout.  Millie Small “My Boy Lollipop”  This one I remember from the time!  Right when music was really changing and the British Invasion was coming.  I can see my older sisters ratting their hair and dancing in the living room to this and others like it.  Fun to hear it again. 

Lorenzo:  The Mission “The Grapes of Wrath”  And now for something completely different.  A moving ballad essentially telling the tale of migrant workers in the US.  I have lived in the area that so many of these people came to and about which Steinbeck wrote his classic novel.  Beautifully done.  (Out of Competition) The Beatles “Savoy Truffle” was the first song that popped into my mind, a gem of a track from The White Album.  George wrote some great, inventive stuff. 

Christian:  Mary Coughlan “Ice Cream Man”  Another more serious piece, bluesy and soulful, even a sense of pop to it.  Bluesy guitar lead punctuates the piece about halfway in.  Full vocal chorus chimes in on the chorus.  There is a sense of theatre in this to me, too, in the production.  Really an intriguing piece, Christian.  Spliff “Carbonara” Ska/Reggae type beat at the beginning.  Sort of stilted vocal in the period of the time, not understanding the words, I’m thinking a sense of the absurd, possibly.  I can get some of the gist with words without a translation. Ah, yes a bit of a lark, as it turns out.  I am noticing how many funny songs there are re food with this poll never thought of it before. 

Kees:  Yes, I wish I felt able one I’ve brought before, Cheryl Wheeler’s “Potato.”  However, here we are.  Pé Daalemmer & Rooie Rinus “Worst” Live recording here, another funny one, actually reminds me of “Potato,” as they are going through a list of things to go with sausages.  Funny they want pretty healthy sides with a probably not-so-healthy choice for a meal.  Novelty song, these usually do go well with live audiences, and this proves to do so as well.  I like the guitar solo 2/3rds in.
