Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head with regards to why I never quite warmed to Gentle Giant in spite of their incredible musicianship.

And I think you might be right as to why I didn't get into prog until the latter part of my teenage years.

Tribute acts? I wouldn't use this word even for bands that are cloning other bands. Very belittling.
Also I don't hear much Maiden in DT music, but in their early days there was a US Power influence, especially Fates Warning.

Dream Theater. I have never made it all the way through one of their albums.
Spock's Beard, Glass Hammer and The Flower Kings all leave me cold, but I find them forgettable rather than objectionable.
Closer to my own preferred genres, I have never got into Cardiacs although they tick plenty of boxes for me.

Sorry to appear a bit dim, but why are you buying albums that you don't like?

The same here. I can also say that about Captain Beefheart - I just don't get either of them.

I’ll flip the premise. I didn’t think I would enjoy early Pink Floyd. I thought it would be too dated and pretentious for my taste.

Instead, I found both Piper and Saucerful to be highly imaginative and listenable.

It reminded me that there is a certain beauty to the analog world that is difficult to capture in the digital age.

^Has to be Coheed and Cambria for me as well; Of course, I am having some very hard times appreciating anything by Magma and Ayreon, too, if I were to mention more notable and important acts.

Frost* :- Although Frost* are very technically proficient, I just couldn't warm  to them, despite listening to all six albums today. Confused

Hi,

FZ is very tough, if you are not "open" to different music, and different interpretations of things. A healthy disrespect for all things of the socialist design of the corporate world, would help too, and probably be even more appreciated today than it was understood or given the time of day then, although FZ was one of the first to really put out the finger/s and the forks ... and said come and get me. And many people STILL don't understand or can appreciate the massive fights against a Constitutional right that some folks, including the FCC were trying so hard to take away from you!

If you had heard "Money" cut up and with the 4 letter words erased, you might sit here and go ... wow. But, sadly, all that is lost and no one really describes the music other than the I like or don't like ideas, and its value is diminished to the point where folks learning how to appreciate it, gets lost in the translation.

It reminds me, a lot, of the history of classical music, and how many well known folks, were booed at the start, like Debussy, Satie, Stravinsky and so many other modern folks ... we just can't seem to find a way to relate to these "different" folks and ideas, and automatically assign them to the dust bin.

I may not like something with fervor BUT I WILL not state that it has no value whatsoever, or that it is not interesting. As an example, I am not a "fan" of Gentle Giant, but their musicianship and creativity is over the top and I have 7 or 8 of their albums from the start! The quality of the music design is fearless and crazy at the same time.

Frank belongs in that area. Not to mention that he blew everyone's mind with a video film (200 Motels) that to this day, so few folks can relate to, and it is by very far, a most with it piece altogether! A total and complete FY to everything/anything with a commercial idea and thought. If you don't believe me just listen to the choir do 200 Motels live (the ending piece) to realize the incredible idea and design and how FZ really felt about so many of these "famous" and "fat" folks controlling music! And that choir did it live (before Gayle passed away) in one of the most amazing things I have ever heard! You couldn't even conceive of anything like that to show up so much "classical" bsmusic!

I AM very open to different music.
I never would have got into artists such as Current 93 if that was the case.
I've recently discovered The Legendary Pi k Dots and I'm currently ploughing through their back catalogue. You can't get more different than TLPD.

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
