Nobody (2021) Directed by Ilya Naishuller

Starts promisingly enough and carries faint echoes of Joel Schumacher's Falling Down from 1993 but soon degenerates thereafter into a very pale albeit stylish imitation of the John Wick franchise (cat lover's edition) Bob Odenkirk is likeable as the ex FBI assassin 'Hutch' who has retired to a life of suburban domesticity to be disrespected and unloved by his family and bored in a dead end job he hates (a.k.a. 'reality' for the rest of we 'nobodies') A bungled robbery at his home however, where he is judged not to have acted bravely in the face of danger soon coaxes him back into the saddle to take out the entire Russian mafia in less than 60 blood spattered, head imploding, knife wielding, gun toting, bone shattering minutes. The violence is as visceral and ludicrous as any wannabe Tarantino could possibly devise but this is state of the art pushback fantasy for emasculated bank clerks the world over. It's very well made and unfailingly professional throughout but so was the Transporter Trilogy. Dumb, derivative and double dipping by writer Derek Kolstad who somehow managed to sell his John Wick story to two different studios. Director Ilya Naishuller is a founder member of Russian indie Rock band Biting Elbows. There is overwhelming evidence that Rock stars cannot act so why should they be any better at directing?

The Matrix 4 Resurrections
It started out interestingly enough. By the time it was just past the half way mark it started to get a little 'wonkie' as we say. At times it felt like it was trying to be two different kinds of movies at once. I won't give away anything for those haven't seen it yet.
I'd give it a 6/10 or maybe 7/10.

Don't Look Up 2021
(satire/farce)
8/10

The Matrix Resurrections - Unfairly bashed in reviews in my opinion. I quite liked it but I can't rave about it either. Some good moments here and there and the story was an acceptable inclusion in the series. Keanu Reeves mumbled his way through without breaking sweat, but some of the other actors were very good - notably Neil Patrick Harris and some other familiar faces from Wachowski TV shows (e.g. Sense 8). 6.5/10

Recently finished watching three movies from the Benson/Moorhead team:
Resolution (2012) - 7.5/10
Spring (2014) - 8/10
The Endless (2017) - 9/10

Resolution needs to be watched before The Endless because the latter is a partial sequel to the former. I've really enjoyed what this duo has come out with, a bizarre mixture of science fiction and horror where "weird" is probably the best description to give these, especially The Endless. I'd like to see a follow-up on the world they've created with these two movies. In the meantime, I've ordered Synchronic on Blu-Ray and expect it to be on par with these based on reviews I've read of it.

Look Away (2018 - US/Canada): Superfluous duration for such a movie with a simple and bad screenplay. The first 3 quarters of the movie was flawless though; flawless but nothing spectacular. Anyhow, the leading actress was superb. Wonderful acting. 6/10

Rewind This! (2013 - US): Ah, the aching feeling of nostalgia... The VHS cassettes... A good and detailed documentary on home videos, mostly about VHS tapes. The interplay of some cool interviews and interesting scenes from the movies was worth seeing. One who bought/rented video tapes back then -you know when- (and perhaps also those who still do it) wouldn't be disappointed to watch this, methinks. 8/10

Don't Look Up on Netflix 2021......6/10
Good cast but heavy handed comedy satire that was so obvious I groaned at times. Could have been funny and clever if done in a more subtle manner.

Summer of 84 (2018 - Canada): This was stranger than Stranger Things whilst not being fantastical. An out of the ordinary horror flick. The typical teen thingy unfolded into some bizarre terror. Excellent! 8.5/10

The Green Knight (2021 - Ireland/Canada/US): This was a bit like The Shape of Water by Guillermo Del Toro, in that, they both lacked the touch of a magic wand. I cannot negatively criticise either movie, but they are not special and alluring for me. I love the classic story from which this movie was adapted, and I didn't regret watching this. 7/10

The Gaelic King (2017 - UK): A low-budget, albeit not "cheap", fantasy movie. A fine contribution to the genre. Good acting, decent visual effects, fitting utilization of music... 7/10

Nightmare Alley (1947) with Tyrone Power and Joan Blondell etc.....original version of the one Del Toro just released. Since I haven't see the new one I can't compare them but the old B&W one was decent film noir.
Carnival 'mind reader' goes high society spiritualist to con people with help of a lady psychologist....he ends up falling down back to his roots.

The Man Who Wasn't There - enjoyable and entertaining although quite typical Coen brothers film where the protagonist is an ordinary man who gets mixed up in something he shouldn't and things get more and more out of hand.

I made it maybe a third through The Black Dahlia until I couldn't take it anymore. Everything felt forced and half-a$$ed and I hated all the main characters and their actors (of whom Scarlett Johansson did a much better job on the Coen's film above.).

I See You (Netflix 2019)

One of those films that going into it, the less you know the better. The plot is quite twisty, and genre wise flirts with horror and thriller , but is mostly a mystery drama . Starring the ever reliable Helen Hunt, at about an hour and 40 minutes it doesn't outstay it's welcome while leading to a neat well thought out conclusion. 7/10

Island Zero (2018 - US): A decent movie built upon a good idea. The screenplay was so-so. The atmosphere was the standout element of the film. 6.5/10

Faster 2010
(Action/Revenge)
Dwayne Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton
6/10
I like Dwayne, and he brings enough to the screen to keep me watching for the 90 min. or so it takes to watch. There are just enough plot holes to keep this firmly in the B-Movie arena.
Sometimes, you just have to turn off your brain, and when that happens, these are the movies that flush the clog.

The Room (2019 - France/Belgium/Luxembourg): Began like an 8/10 movie, but ended in half. Where should I begin... Here's my take on the film with serious spoilers: The Van Gogh painting aged too swiftly, or the baby/kid aged too slowly outside the house... Or was the "wishmaster" merciful when dealing with the living beings? Also, the psycho-figment at the mental hospital mentioned "clothes" implying that his visitor wears what he "wishes". Shouldn't the protagonist get naked outside the house? Also, they eat and drink stuff that they "wish for". And they obviously don't lose their nutritional effect outside the house. So, why not wish for pills that would protect their kid outside? OK, it might not work, but it is better to try than not. Either be creative, or destructive. The couple was too "in-between". Anyway, a failed effort. 4/10

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

This old comic book would sit in flimsy rotating metal racks at corner liquor stores during the 1970s alongside Doctor Strange, Inhumans, Luke Cage, Black Panther, and the X-Men, tempting kids to spend that last quarter in their pocket after splurging on a green glass bottle of Coke.   It was far from Marvel's best, but on a sleepy summer day a poorly-rendered comic was better than daytime TV, that's for sure.   The movie version continues that tradition of mindless entertainment but raises the level of this gongfu hero to something creative, fun, and respectful of the Chinese myths the comic so clumsily handled.   Shang-Chi is no Kwai Chang Caine but then neither was David Carradine.
