A tough call here. Many excellent options.
Will go Present over SB and Opeth.

Dig me...But don't...Bury me
I'm running still, I shall until, one day, I hope that I'll arrive Warning: Listening to jazz excessively can cause a laxative effect. |

My favourite here is A Little Man And A House, although it's technically not the first Cardiacs album, just the first one to be professionally recorded and the first non-cassette release. It's a good thing it's there though, otherwise I wouldn't know whether to vote for Present or Thinking Plague...

There are a lot of great albums here. IO voted for The Flower Kings, but many albums here are as good, and deserve a vote too.

If the 80s are a part of "modern prog", what is 21st Century Prog called? And what are the releases from 1976-79 (i.e. post-"Classic Era" prog) called? I am confused!

I'm very fond of
Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear (1983) Anekdoten - Vemod (1993) Anglagard - Hybris (1992) Riverside - Out of Myself (2003) and find Pendragon - The Jewel (1985) quite okay
|
||||
quality over quantity, and all kind of PopcoRn almost beyond

Three truly outstanding albums in the list:
For All We Shared - contains some of MA's best songs (Heroes Never Die, The Night Sky, Out of the Inn) Out of Myself - superb dark, moody prog from start to finish Tales From The Lush Attic - any album with The Last Human Gateway, Awake and Nervous and The Enemy Smacks has got to be great. And The Sentinel is also very good. I can't pick from these.

Yeah I don't know about albums released in the 1980's being labeled as "modern." Why not just call it "post-70s prog?"
|
||||
Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)
