From best to worst:

1) Love Over Gold
2) Brothers in Arms
3) Making Movies
4) On Every Street
5) Dire Straits
6) Communique

This thread was inspired by a recent re-listening to Love Over Gold for the first time in a long time. Some have suggested (due to the long instrumental passages) that this album is secretly prog, but it's still too close to the Dylan/Springsteen school to be considered as such. Nevertheless, it's far and away their best, and unquestionably a masterpiece! None of these albums are bad: even the first two, where the band was finding their way, include some great music.

Love Over Gold

Debut & Brothers IA (the flipside is awesome, making up for the crappy A-side), Alchemy

Communiqué, Movies

Every Street
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

Not only do I consider "Love Over Gold" their best album, I consider the title track to be their best song.

In choosing their best song ever, I would be really torn between the epic sweep of "Telegraph Road" and the casually ethereal "Love Over Gold". The Mike Mainieri vibraphone solo at the end is one of the most beautiful moments in the history of recorded music! I bought Mainieri's album Wanderlust based solely upon hearing this solo, which went a long way toward making me the jazz fan I am today.

Love Over Gold
Dire Straits
Brothers in Arms
Making Movies
Communique
On Every Street

All six are good but this is my rough ranking. Only sure about the top 2. Private Investigations is my favorite individual song.

Their release order, with On Every Street & Brothers in Arms sharing the last spot.
