Here is a larger definition of "field recording," so some may not feel so scared off by the term. Up to Nick and Lorenzo.
Field recording is the term used for an audio recording produced outside a recording studio, and the term applies to recordings of both natural and human-produced sounds. It also applies to sound recordings like electromagnetic fields or vibrations using different microphones like a passive magnetic antenna for electromagnetic recordings or contact microphones. For underwater field recordings, a field recordist uses hydrophones to capture the sounds and/or movements of whales, or other aquatic organisms. These recordings are very useful for sound designers. Field recording of natural sounds, also called phonography (a term chosen to illustrate its similarities to photography), was originally developed as a documentary adjunct to research work in the field, and foley work for film. With the introduction of high-quality, portable recording equipment, it has subsequently become an evocative artform in itself. In the 1970s, both processed and natural phonographic recordings, (pioneered by Irv Teibel's Environments series), became popular. "Field recordings" may also refer to simple monaural or stereo recordings taken of musicians in familiar and casual surroundings, such as the ethnomusicology recordings pioneered by John Lomax, Nonesuch Records, and Vanguard Records. |

My first thought was Pink Floyd's "Final Cut" album that includes various sound effects. Field recordings have been integrated into the music by using the holophonics audio processing technique to make sound effects appear more three-dimensional to the listener which was quite groundbreaking at the time. Meanwhile field recordings and various sound effects are frequently used in electronic music such as ambient and beyond. There are also various multidisciplinary artists who use field recordings in their work. And let's not forget about film, video games (sound design), etc. I know one or two Swiss sound artists who do research in this area and create new and exciting soundscapes, one of them has recieved attention even beyond national borders. However, experimentation with various kinds of sounds and noise goes much further back, in fact since sound recording devices exist.- I'm sure that Greg and Anders could tell us a lot on this subject! The theme concept of interactive polls is great and keeps things going but the longer the more difficult it will get to find new themes I guess. Edited by Mila-13 - December 28 2021 at 00:04 |

I'm also active in a local football (soccer) forum, where they have a series of theme-based song contests. They're at no. 137 now and nowhere near running out of themes. Many of those are driven by the lyrics, you can then really come up with all kinds of stuff, be it parts of the body, "energy", houses & homes, nations, whatever. I'm not much of a lyrics listener, so this isn't quite perfect for me (occasionally they have other themes such as cover versions as well), but the message here is, the pool of possible themes is pretty much unlimited, with a bit of creativity. Obviously we can't expect to have something to nominate all the time that fits the theme and is (a) reasonably unknown, (b) we really love, (c) is not by artists that already had come up before. There need to be limits to perfectionism.

Well said, Christian. The idea is to have fun sharing what we love, it's not really about the "contest," or making it really difficult. There are some themes that even might stand revisiting, as well, sometimes I've had to narrow down what to bring forth, rather than post more than 3 (the typical amount of initial entries), sometimes I've really had to dig to come up with something.

The funny thing here, for me, is that I honestly thought this poll would be easier, and require less “research” than many other interactive polls I have seen or participated in. I also thought it would be one that would be easier for those without not “such a wide and varied musical knowledge”. That said, I’ve always found that the interactive polls (long before I first participated in one) are a an exercise in “musical research”. When I’ve participated, there has very rarely been something that immediately comes to mind, and normally I do have to think long and hard and do the research. Even after I think I’ve found a song, I have to trawl YT (a site I’ve never liked, and hardly ever use) to see if a video even exists for the song I want to use - and if it doesn’t, it is straight back to square one, But, that research is, for me, one of the greatest parts of the fun of the interactive poll. There is no way that every poll suggestion is going to be as easy for every participant, but I do think a “field recordings” topic is a lot easier than you think. I’d be very surprised if there is any forum member on PA who doesn’t own at least one album that includes field recordings. I don’t want to post a poll that no one is going to enjoy, though. So I can come up with something else, if field recordings is going to be a chore. |

Many, many bands and artists have used field recordings in their music, so I don't think this would be a difficult theme. A couple that spring to mind immediately are prog though (almost every Pink Floyd album, Nightingales and Bombers by Manfred Mann's EB (though the actual recording is just a snippet on the track...) Kate Bush, Marillion...), but I guess that once I look at my collection it won't be difficult to find examples outside of prog. And I like this idea! Regarding the "research", everyone is of course participating in the way she or he wants, but for me the fun of these polls is in the sharing, as Lorenzo says, which means that the music I put forward is music I know - I will not "research" the theme and put forward music that I hadn't heard before (I can not "share" something that I don't "own" in my music experience - either in my collection or in my recollection...). Again, the theme of field recordings offers many many possibilities and seems to me wide enough for each and everyone to find his/her samples... EDIT: ...and several non-prog examples are already popping up in my head... Edited by suitkees - December 28 2021 at 03:20 |

I am in complete agree, ent with you, Kees. The fun for me is sharing, and I would not share anything I haven’t heard before, or that I don’t have in my collection. (If I were not clear, when I said I had to think long and hard (“research”) for a song to fit a poll’s topic, I meant from within my own collection. It is not often, for me, that something is immediately apparent. And I find it a bit of a chore to find (“research”) the YT video. But the research involved in finding something from my collection to share is as fun for me as the sharing.) |

I think I misunderstood your proposal, Nick.
I thought you were referring to music played outside the recording studios, that is, outdoors, which included the sounds of the surrounding "nature" like the singing of birds or the noise of trains. This idea seemed very specific to me. ( It is also very fascinating, I would be curious to listen to music like this.) Then I asked if it was enough that there was outdoor music, for example on a lawn (basically a concert, or a live recording without an audience), without the sounds of nature. In that case it was easier to find a song. I understand that instead you are talking about music recorded in the studio which includes sounds or noises recorded outside the studio. Like the songs from The Final Cut or Back in the USSR by the Beatles. Did I get it right? Edited by jamesbaldwin - December 28 2021 at 08:30 |

Yes, I also "research," but within my own collection and memory, if sometimes, I've not purchased an entire recording, but do remember a piece of music I enjoyed.

Yes, that’s right. I did originally toy with making it a requirement that the field recordings were more than just ornamental, but rather were integral to the music and concept of the piece. But I decided that might have been too specific, which is why I decided to just leave it as a piece that features field recordings. As another example from my collection, Ruby Solly last year created a tribute to the city and surroundings where she now lives (though I believe she has the same hometown as me), and used field recordings of the places she created musical numbers for to great effect. The combination of her playing of cello and taonga pūoro, accompanied by the field recordings, gives a real sense of place. The music would still work without the field recordings, but it would probably be neither as effective, nor affective. Henika’s album this year, with its innovative use of bird song, is similar in the way the field recordings are both effective and affective, and elevate the album in a way the songs would not, and could not, work without them. |

Also, FYI, we have sometimes posted non-YT links, such as to a bandcamp page (referring to your mention of YT, Nick). If this is the theme, I'm actually going to link to a 3 min radio spot for one of my choices, as there is no YT for the recording.

Yes, I’ve posted Bandcamp links myself. But I’ve always assumed that YT videos are the preference as well as the norm for the polls, so I’ve always still searched for them on YT. When I’ve posted a Bandcamp link, it’s only after having not found a video on YT. I admit searching for the YT videos is my least favourite part of the interactive polls, but I don’t think it would be appreciated if every time I participated, I posted only non-YT links! 😄 |

I think the YT thing was to avoid any conflicts with rights to materials? Also, the playlists you can make there are helpful to people.
And, yes, I follow the same protocol, try to find a YT first, then move on, if one's not available. I think I even used a dropbox link once. For me, the hassle is using a different browser, as Chrome links don't work in here, I go through Firefox, which is very tedious to get started up, robbing me of an extra 60 seconds or so of my life, lol. |

For personal and health reasons, I don't know how long I will be able to connect here in Pa in the next few weeks. I hope the IPs will continue according to schedule, with the help of Nickie (and Christian, if he can)

Hello All:
Lorenzo had asked me to keep an eye on the Interactive Polls while he's busy with moving. I am thinking that Nick could potentially officially open the Field Recordings Poll for voting today. Hopefully we'll hear soon. I know his plate is full as well of late. ~Nickie

Voting is open for the Field Recordings Poll.
JD is next up, I suggest opening the poll this Friday 21 January, make final selections by Friday, 28 January. This gives a full weekend for listening to all, and another full weekend to relisten/make voting decisions. That tends to give everyone time to ruminate and also comment a bit, for those who are able to do that. Will message JD to see if that is suitable.
