Hi,
“There is no reality except the one contained within us. That is why so many people live such an unreal life. They take the images outside of them for reality and never allow the world within to assert itself.” (Steppenwolf)

“I have a foreboding of an America in my children’s or grandchildren’s time — when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and whats true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness. The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less), the lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance." Carl Sagan 1995

“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.”
― Issac Asimov |

![]() This has gotta be true in the past. But today it seems like some newspapers exist that are not biased. I don't read newspapers much, but some people that I trust say that there are such newspapers. Though I would be surprised if more than 1k people buy them in my country. A friend of mine was reading one and I first heard that there's such a newspaper in my country from that person. Edited by Shadowyzard - November 22 2021 at 02:34 |

![]() I fundamentally agree, but we can/do use some words/phrases that the world use to "define" us for practical purposes. Sometimes explaining our "unique" aspects is exhausting, annoying, pointless etc. It even can result in conflicts. |

Hi, This is (probably) more of an American thing than otherwise ... and I think that Mr. T would agree with the honorable Mr. T of the old days and quotes. In my old days, of the fascist government in Portugal, the newspaper was not about "information" ... because it didn't have any! You read the "underground" stuff to find out what was going on, but these days in America the commercialization has destroyed the ability of the "underground" to publish anything, thus we only know the skin, or some Cliff Notes version of the real thing. This is, btw, what the whole thing is about these days (here in the USA) when everyone thinks that "the truth" is an opinion, not a reality that the Supreme Court even can not define or believe!

A few words from Percy Bysshe Shelley:
Ozymandias I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.” |

"I, for example, am characterised by preferring to remember bad deeds, and so I could almost say that 'every past time was worse', were it not for the fact that the present seems to me as horrible as the past. I remember so many calamities, so many cynical and cruel faces, so many evil deeds, that memory is to me like the fearful light that illuminates a sordid museum of shame".
Ernesto Sábato.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times."
From Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. Possibly the best openening line to a novel ever, although "Call me Ishmeal" must be up there.

Here's another English writer:
“But I don’t want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat: "we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad." "How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice. "You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.” |

Churchill's admonition:
Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never--in nothing, great or small, large or petty--never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.
