Yeah, Chris Botti plays trumpet, but some of David Torns stuff is Fripp on steroids and some of King Crimson best stuff is reconstrukcted on this disc. Bruford and Levin lay down some incredible bottoms for the solo flights of Torn and Botti. There are many more progressive moments here than on any Earthworks recordings.

Earthworks is much more jazz and electro oriented than prog ! About Upper extremities, I wonder if it's not a follow-up to Torn's "Cloud of mercury", as the line-up is quite the same (except for the trumpet where Botti replaces Isham). But the music here is much more aggressive and darker, in the style of King Crimson as you pointed out. Bruford proved once more on this record that he belongs to the greats .

Yes, it is MUCH better the Clouds About Mercury. Not as ambient and totally muscular. Bruford hasn't played that "FREE" in years. Breath taking. I haven't heard the Live version, BLUE Nights, any good?

It surely would appeal to Philippe  as there are plenty of improvisations, but as far as I'm concerned these improvisations don't grab me as the KC's improvs on "Thrakattak". If you like improvised music, you will be very pleased, otherwise forget it.
