Totally agree with you on this one. Rather bizarre and definitely a fun one to watch.

Vivarium was excellent. It still resonates with me even now and I think of it often.

No Time to Die. Loved it really as did my wife, except maybe for the last 10-15 minutes which just seemed a bit rushed. The Cuba action with Ana De Armas was the highlight. But all in all a fitting end to DCs run of movies.

The Genius Club (2006 - US): The antagonist acted magnificently, and the man with the highest IQ score was a cool guy. Other than these, the acting was good, but the dialogues were natural yet too uninteresting. All in all, the movie has a plausible plot, but it is far from being a work of "genius". 6/10
El Metodo (2005 - Argentina/Spain/Italy): Good cast, good acting... The rest was utterly bland. 5/10 Extracted (2012 - US): Very good movie! An indie delight. I loved the ending too. Recommended. 8/10 |

The Shawshank Redemption. Absolutely 10/10. I would say 11. The meaning of freedom has probably never been better demonstrated in a movie. Freeman's performance is glorious and unbeatable.

2 Philip K. Dick adaptations:
A Scanner Darkly (2006- US): It brought yawny tears to my eyes. 3/10 Radio Free Albemuth (2010 - US): An obscure precious gem. I supported neither side politically, but the message conveyed was powerful. Probably my favourite PKD adaptation. Flawless victory! 10/10 |

Fortress (1992 - US): Pretty good '90s American sci-fi/adventure movie. 7/10
Fortress 2 (2000 - US): A decent sequel. 6/10 Out of Time (2021 - US): Fun to watch, but nothing special. (If we don't count the "special" aliens.) It would be better as a TV-series. 6/10 |

Anglo-Horror!
Lord of Tears (2013 - UK): An overwhelming and tragic childhood trauma, and how the protagonist faces/revisits it. Quite atmospheric. The type of British horror that I like. This one was extremely good. 9/10 The Unkindness of Ravens (2016 - UK): Some devastating war traumas, and their gritty and psychotic reflections. This was an "intense" cinematic experience. I'm quite surprised about how obscure this movie is on IMDb. I believe this movie is of top quality. I enjoyed it, but not as much as the one above, which was fantastically magical. This one was more of a psychological horror movie tinged by/mixed with some delusional visuals. Huge spoiler: The ravens and eyes symbolism made me remember a news I had read long ago. In the USA, those who claimed to have been abducted by aliens -I mean, a vast majority of them, at least- turned out to be Vietnam veterans. The slanted eyes of the Vietnamese, and the slanted huge eyes of the aliens. In this movie, I presume the ravens and eyes give way to at least 3 different kinds of interpretations: 1-) The reality, and how it results is some psychotic attacks. 2-) The ravens are opportunists (mentioned in the movie) and are still haunting the protagonist after the war. Which means they are the ultimate antagonists who/which will try to do him what befell to his comrade. 3-) The protagonist would wish never to have seen those scenes in the war. And his subconscious is creating raven-like creatures to symbolically pluck his eyes out. Furthermore, the eye symbolism in Oedipus Rex also comes to mind. Anyhow: 8.5/10 |

El hoyo (2019 - Spain): Engaging and intriguing, in the first half. And then fell apart. Like a politician beginning a great speech, going on being persuasive for some time, and then losing focus, and concluding with horrible messages for the dumb crowds. 3/10

Communion (1989 - US/UK): A strange movie. Sort of like a bizarre but not disturbing dream. I think the horror aspect of the movie comes from Christopher Walken, not the aliens.

Duel - I last saw this as a kid at least 30 years ago. I liked it a lot back then and every now and then thought I should see it again. It was on tv now and I was a bit worried it'd feel less impressive to the adult me. What the heck, it turned out even better than I remembered!
Lights in the Dusk - less known and appreciated Kaurismäki film I think. It's darker and more miserable than many of them. Maniac Cop - stupid and fun.

^ Duel is TV cinema at its best, though a bit dated. I'd be surprised if Spielberg hasn't considered remaking it. |

I remember seeing that as a kid. Dennis Weaver was the car driver I think. Classic tension thriller.

^ the '80s flick with Michael Douglass? Yeah it's decent, very stuck in its time but had a good style. Edited by Atavachron - December 22 2021 at 22:52 |

Yes, that one. It just couldn't get any more 80's! I love the ending.
