I hadn't really considered Rainbow but they were probably an important 'link' band between old and new in the seventies. Its much clearer to me that something like Rising is more heavy metal compared to say In Rock or Led Zep II. Also Thin Lizzy with that twin guitar thing of Gary Moore and Scott Goram was another very important band for the genre. Can only do 12 'proper' metal albums, 3 at the bottom are clearly not but do have a strong metal influence.

Led Zep - II
Deep Purple - In Rock
Rainbow - Rising
Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Opeth - Pale Communion
Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Haken - Vector
Animals As Leaders - S/t
Exivious - Exivious
Katatonia - City Burials
Meshuggah - The Violent Sleep Of Reason
Rush - 2112
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Tool - Lateralus

If you haven't seen it, I've regretted the term "the proper Metal" (after Cristi's critism), as I now find it too subjective and condescending towards the earlier Metal.
Edit:
I think your point about Rainbow and Thin Lizzy is quite interesting.

How do some you distinguish between heavy metal and hard rock? I really don't have one.

Anyway, 15 off the top of my head (1 album per artist). I am sure I have left off other favorites.

1. Metallica - Master of Puppets
2. Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
3. Corrosion of Conformity - Blind
4. Prong - Prove You Wrong
5. Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
6. Motorhead - Orgasmatron
7. Anthrax - Sound of White Noise
8. AC/DC - Highway to Hell
9. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
10. Tool - Lateralus
11. Cynic - Traced in Air
12. Warrior Soul - God, Drugs and the New Republic
13. Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance
14. Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction
15. Dream Theater - Images and Words

don't start with another what's prog and what's not, you'll be killing your own thread.

it goes at the top of the general music page every time someone posts.

But discussions like what's prog and what's not are thread killers and derail the whole initial conversation. Best be avoided in my humble opinion.

Agree, so even I find these discussions very constructive for Prog at the time being, it has to be in an appropriate quantity.

But then, even more heartly welcome to you with that, as well, and it's very interesting to see some of your favourites! Smile

One by each artist, otherwise it would be dominated by Black Sabbath, Riverside, and Dream Theater.
Ran with 19...Too difficult to separate the last eight.

1) Black Sabbath - Paranoid
2) Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Turbulence
3) Riverside- "Anno Domini High Definition"
4) UneXpecT- "Fables Of The Sleepless Empire"
5) Deep Purple- "Deep Purple In Rock"
6) Diablo Swing Orchestra- "Pacifisticuffs"
7) Tool - "Fear Inoculum"
8) Queensryche - "Operation: Mindcrime"
9) Behold...The Arctopus- "Skullgrid"
10) Ayreon- "The Human Equation"
11) Opeth- "Pale Communion"
12) Pain of Salvation- "The Perfect Element-Part 1"
13)  Katatonia- "Last Fair Deal Gone Down"
14) Sleepytime Gorilla Museum- "Of Natural History"
15)  Judas Priest - "Sad Wings of Destiny"
16) Therion- "Theli"
17) Caligula's Horse- "The Tide, The Thief, & The River's End"
18) Sigh- "Imaginary Sonicscape"
19)Devin Townsend Project- "Deconstruction"

Would like to see two lists (70's metal, that folks in the1970's called metal, but people now name "hard rock")  Bands like ACDC, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple.
The other list?  Metal that started when Fates Warning, Metallica, and Queensryche hit the ground running.
I think of Rainbow- Rising as the bridge album between 1970's hard rock metal and early 80's metal and beyond.

^ Therion - Theli - now that's a great, groundbreaking album, shame on me I didn't think about it when i made my list. I listened to it when it came out, still listen to it every once in a while, never got old.
