I won't call it "genre", either, but it has been used as a label, and yes, it has some specific, stylistic characteristics. Edit: Anyway, good point.

Not taking early heavy rock or heavy prog bands into consideration (Black Sabbath counts though). Because although I acknowledge they are an essential part of metal history, I don’t think of them as metal. Something like this perhaps:
Sadus- Illusions Аспид [Aspid] - Кровоизлияние Slayer - South of Heaven Carcass - Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal Black Sabbath - Master of Reality Mercyful Fate - Don't Break the Oath Vektor - Black Future Atvm - Famine, Putrid and f**king Endless Death - Leprosy Metallica - Master of Puppets Blood Incantation - Hidden History of the Human Race Manowar - Hail to England Sepultura - Beneath the Remains Morbid Angel - Covenant |

I think, NWOBHM can be said to be a transition phase between "the early Metal" and "the proper Metal".

About that, I can tell that Ozzy Osbourne has once said in an interview that Paranoid was ment as a Prog album, and even that interview was done many years after 70's, I think that is very probable.

There is no such thing as "proper metal". It's still heavy metal.

What do you mean by "proper metal", I've never seen it before. Early metal was still heavy metal, a first wave of bands if it's easy to point out. NWOBHM was a continuation of that, with new influences, artists trying to come up with something new and it worked. It inspired and influenced new genres, such as speed metal, thrash, US Power and in the case of Venom even early black metal or what metalheads call the first wave of black metal (not an expert in that, but I've tried a few bands, read and watched a few things at least to understand what was going on).

Okay, I agree that "proper Metal" is a subjective characteristic of the qualitative changes that happend in Metal beginning with the 80's. Further more, witch is not good, it's condescending towards earlier Metal. So, if I want a term to describe those qualitative changes in the 80's, it's better not to be condescending. And I agree, it's just a genre which is changing all the time. Thank you for your correction.

Yes, as Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage are maybe by not so few today considered as even the begining of Prog Metal - but the interview was about Paranoid, and I think that in 1973 BS had an image as a Metal band. About Paranoid, well, the year was 1970, and the Prog genre was just began to form so, what was and what not was Prog, was absolutely not clear. So, in fact, in my opinion, Paranoid viewing from historical perspective maybe surely can be considered as Prog.

Not a huge metal fan so picking 15 won't be doable. However I can pick a few but some of these probably aren't considered metal. Whatever.
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast Iron Maiden - Powerslave Alice In Chains - Dirt Rush - Caress of Steel Kings X - Dogman (listen to it. it's effin' metal) Porcupine Tree - Deadwing Captain Beyond - Captain Beyond |
