Yes! That said, I have not listened to many of the albums people have listed here, so still lot's of 1971 prog to discover (though I'm not sure everyone is sticking to prog).

I haven't see that list, but if you include RYM's rating in your consideration, it might not be that obvious. So, I would prefer to look at the top 160 list, I've made - at least to begin with.

Something else, dr wu23, I think the whole question is difficult to answer on some objective terms, as it's pretty subjective from the very beginning - so in short, nothing's obvious here, my friend, at least the way I see it.

Well, richardh, I won't say I agree with you on that (see my list), and I'm not familiar with your taste but

Not that interesting a year once you get past the releases of the top bands (named several times on the thread already) . I think the gap between the big Six etc and the rest was massive at the time. Prog expanded very quickly though and got more broader and interesting over the next few years IMO.

Hi,

FAMILY is a long project for listening, in that they change so much that most folks can not handle it. They kept on experimenting and coming up with some far out stuff, and by the time they got to "It's Only a Movie" or "Fearless", if you don't have those albums, you are not a progressive music listener at all!

The band then changed to Chapman and Whitney and right after into Streetwalkers. The band Streetwalkers had a lot more rhythm and blues (I have no idea if those are the right terms for it), but their live material was bombastic and special, and it was quite like "Good News/Bad News" that kinda put them on the map, and mostly for Roger Chapman's (Chappo) vocals. It was indeed strong and then some!

But one thing to remember, and it continued in Chappo's solo albums ... the guitar player is fabulous and does some of the prettiest stuff with effects you ever heard, and makes sure they are a part of the song. Just as good, if not better than Toni McPhee with Groundhogs!

A very special bunch of folks, and Roger is still up, although I imagine that these days he's probably singing in his loo and bed a lot more than a stage! But he was, just like Joe Cocker, one of the best of the tough voiced singers ... most folks hated him for it, but man ... can that guy ever sing and bring it home!

Clap

A great song from the Streetwalkers:

Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

Possibly Fearless' masterpiece

I agree with:

Many regard 1971 to be the first real year of prog (i'm not one of them) but even if you disagree with this analysis, there's no doubt that 1971 was the year that prog really took off and countless bands started created some of the all time classics.

What are your favorites from this year? Prog only please!

Amon Duul II - Tanz Der Lemminge
Can - Tago Mago
Comus - First Utterance

Faust - Faust
Gentle Giant - Acquiring The Taste

Jethro Tull - Aqualung

Nektar - Journey To The Centre Of The Eye
Egg

Osanna - L'Uomo
Samla Mammas Manna - Samla Mammas Manna

Supersister - To The Highest Bidder

Van Der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts

I know that Meddle, Nursery Cryme [and PARTIALLY In The Land Of Grey And Pink] are popular but none really rock my world.

(I dont know some album of your list)

I add:

- Family - Fearless

- Traffic - The Low Spark

- King Crimson - Islands

- Le Orme - Collage

- The Trip - Caronte

- Cladio Rocchi - Volo Magico

Podium:

1) Pawn Hearts

2) First Utterance

3) Aqualung
