Well, I've got this idea for a thread about our favourite Metal albums, and my own list is presented in a unranked but chronological order. 
In my opinion,  this list can be considered as not less than a very little but yet, quite a lot telling document on Metal history, as the bands 
represent several, different sub-genres, and most of them have been very popular and influential. 
About LedZepps, however you might want to classify them, I surely consider them to be a part of Metal history, and not to do without.
Best with only one album for each band and I'll hope you'll enjoy it!

In terms of what I think 'Metal' is then I struggle to get far past Iron Maiden. Their 80's albums are virtually unimpeachable for me.

I don't really consider a lot of the bands named to be Metal ( I might be well wrong but were Sabbath ever described at this?). I tend to think it started with the likes of Judas Priest, Saxon and Maiden in the late seventies and then Metallica took it on and made it even more popular. Wiki though does reference Zep, Sabbath and Purple as the pioneers although it does credit Judas Priest with the genre's evolution by discarding the blues influence. 

I do quite like the technical metal stuff of Exivious and Animals As Leaders as well at later Opeth. Mastodon are also a cool band. I also like the Meshuggah album I own.

I could try and put a list together especially if we are counting Deep Purple , Led Zep!

To begin with, I must say, I had been thinking very much in the same way - it was only beginning with the 80's, the music sounded to me as true Metal.

Nevertherless, that is very much so according to the sources, I've seen, of which I can mention:
Sound of the Beast. The Complete Headbanging History of Heavy Metal (2003) by Ian Christe
Heavy Metal. The Music and it's Culture (2000) by Deena Weinstein
Mean Deviation. Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal (2010) by Jeff Wagner

Edit:
The existence of "Heavy Metal" in the 70's can be easyly seen by the name of the sub-genre NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) which appeared in the late 70's (and included, say Saxon).
- And today, I can only say, those like Sad Wings of Destiny (1976) and Black Sabbat's Vol. 4 (1972) sound like Metal to me - even only as "early Metal".
So, maybe I'll distinguish (now) between "the early Metal" and "the proper Metal".

P.S. I'm very glad of this discussion, richardh, it clarified further my view on "Metal", thank you.

As far as I've seen, it's quite widely agreed on today that Black Sabbath is the most important band in inventing the style while, in Jeff Wagner's and Ian Christe's opinion (similar to Wiki), Judas Priest must be seen as the most most important band in founding the genre.
- But concerning the invention of the style, I think, Wiki is very much right in it's point of view.

The metal categories cast such a wide span. I remember as a kid in the late 60s, early 70s, hearing bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult, Judas Priest, Nazareth, and AC/DC referred to as "Heavy Metal" bands. Often their music was too aggressive/abrasive to get AM radio play (except for their ballads), but was receiving attention from the newly forming FM stations that were using album music formats.

Other than perhaps giving AC/DC a little more credit, I agree with OP that it seemed as if Iron Maiden was the leader in really escalating this music into an art form with it's own separate following--separating itself from the dreary/depressing goth or decrepit blues-rock bands and music. Then Metallica and the rest is history!

I also would reinforce the idea that the tech/extreme metal and all of their offshoot sub-categories almost deserve a separate consideration/thread. Where does one place albums by bands like Atheist, Enchant, Enslaved, Voivod, Exivious, Death, Cynic, Gorguts, Gojira, and Meshuggah?

NWOBHM is not a metal genre, it's exactly what it says in its name, a wave of heavy metal bands , a lot of them influenced by what came before - Purple, Heep, Priest, Budgie, Sabbath and add the likes of punk, Motorhead. 

If hard rock and heavy metal walked hand in hand in the past, with the NWOBHM, heavy metal went ahead and left hard rock behind. Big smile

Well, might agree, as they are not in line with my taste (Melissa being difficult enough), and unfortunately not at all represented in my OP - but there's still very good possibility to mention them here. So, this thread may be a good investigation of that idea.

- Many of those bands are very popular in general, but I don't really know how much on PA.

15 albums of 2021 maybe not, but favorite 15 albums in general, I agree, very hard.
