A tense Whodunit starring Nicole Kidman, Huge Grant and Donald Sutherland.
A wealthy family is front and centre as an unfaithful husband's lover is brutally murdered.
This one will keep you guessing right to the end.

Very entertaining although I wanted to be more surprised by the ending. Can't say much more as it would be a spoiler.
Agreed, and I may have given a higher rating with a little better outcome at the end.

I haven't finished it yet, but I'm working on a new Chinese tv show called The Rebel Princess (aka Monarch Industry), starring Zhang Ziyi (of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). It's visually ravishing; every scene is stunning. It starts off a bit slow and wasn't sure I'd be able to get through it, but the more I stuck with it the more gripping it became. It's online at Viki.com (http://www.viki.com/tv/36360c-the-rebel-princess), which is a fantastic source for Asian shows, including Korean dramas. Be forewarned, though: there's 68 episodes, which seems a bit mad! LOL

I presume a very expensive Apple sci-fi series that barely managed to get off the ground. I love Lee Pace as an actor, suitably very arrogant as 'Empire' the clone dynasty , and this made it watchable as much as anything. Overall not bad and certainly visually spectacular but not as engaging as, say, The Expanse drama wise. Has the potential to get better (Season 2) has been commissioned. 7/10

I stupidly didn't check but Episode 8 was not the finale. Oops Embarrassed. It's 10 episodes , the last one of S1 is coming this Friday.

Finished Alice in Borderland tonight. 8 episodes and certainly more to come with future series. It's based on a graphic novel so it depends on how that pans out I suppose. Was it as good as Squid Game? No it's not, but definitely worthy of a watch. I can't say too much about it without giving anything away, but it involves enforced games and lots of death. 8/10

Maid - (Netflix) This was only intended to be a 10 episode mini series with no intention of there being other seasons.  And I hope there aren't any more.  Because that would ruin this almost perfect drama that it would do many people a lot of good to watch and think about.  Very heartfelt performances by everyone.  This one will make you laugh, cry and just get angry because it is all real.  It's all based on memoirs of the person represented by the main character.  My wife lived most of her life in a similar situation and, though it was a bit triggering for her in a few places (never over the top however, thank goodness), she loved it and commented several times at how it hits the nail right on the head.  Amazing series!  10/10

American Rust - (Showtime) This is a very slow moving drama that is based around a murder and Jeff Daniels plays an intriguing character that gets way too involved in trying to protect the accused.  There are a lot of scenes that are devoted to character building, but in this case, it's way too much.  The same story could have been told a lot better in 5 episodes making everything a lot tighter.  Yes there are some scenes that remain with you for a long time, some effective, others you would rather forget.  It's dark, depressing and hard to watch, but something keeps you there once you start watching.  It might be the hope that things will happen, and some things do, but a lot of time passes between any sort of payoffs, good or bad.  The show tries to be pensive and provoke thought about the state that lower-class Americans are in, but a lot of the acting is lacking in emotion.  At times I found myself wishing scenes would hurry and get over, and that's not a good thing in this case.  There is good and bad here, but it's mostly pretty blah.  And, there is no real "who-done-it" here because you know fairly early on what happened and who did it.  There are very few bright spots to this real downer of a series.  5/10

We recently watched the first movie in the third season of the French crime TV-series "Les Rivières pourpres" ("The Purple Rivers"); we watched it in the original French.

In this episode a bacteriologist creates a mutation of the pest bacillus that only he has an antidote against and uses it to kill certain cops, and the investigators have to find out who is behind this and why he kills them. The series is pretty dark and a French equivalent to Nordic Noir. 7/10.

The Crown S1&2
I put these together as Matt Smith and Claire Floy play the younger versions of the Duke of Edinburgh and the Queen respectively. Matt Smith is incredibly underrated as an actor and really captured the young Duke perfectly for me. However Clair Foy overdoes the posh accent to the point of parody and that grates a bit. Never boring even though if at times stretching credulity with imagined conversations. 7/10

Midnight Mass - Very religious and a few too many monologues, but a gripping watch nonetheless with a loose thread that could lead to further seasons. 9/10

Sad to see this series finish . Billy Bob Thornton brings his considerable acting clout to always engaging storylines. He is the 'David', a retired lawyer hired to take on massive corporations trying to cover up their evil doings. 9/10.

Mr Corman S1
Something different , written by John Gordon-Levitt who also takes the lead role of a 30 something school teacher with anxiety issues. I found it engaging although the lead character is not that lovable or always that nice. However the very varied and interesting supporting cast helps elevate it. Maybe not one of Apple TV's best efforts but not a flop necessarily. 6/10
Joseph Gordon-Levitt not John.

I know what you mean about the main character, but that changes quickly as we learn more about him. I re-watched it with my wife and realized how funny he was, especially in those early episodes - the gambling bits, accidentally giving a gun to his child for a birthday, asking for another loan from the collection thugs who just beat him... LOL Also, the episodes are quite short compared to most K-dramas, which are often movie-length. (One of the Squid Game episodes is only about 30 minutes long.)

Nine Perfect Strangers 2021
(8 Episodes)
7.5/10

A Psychological drama featuring an 'A' list cast including Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy Michael Shannon, Luke Evans and Asher Keddie just to name a few.
Great characters in a little bit of a disjointed story about self discovery and the journey to healing.
Strong recommendation.

Finished Season 2 of the French Sci-fi Missions. A bit of a slow start but picked up when they got back into space. More to come I guess. 7/10

Well we finally finished all 10 seasons (and the after movie).
MI-5 (Spooks) 2002-2011
As I stated in an earlier post this is a great spy show with twists and turns where no cast member is safe.
Very highly recommended. Overall series gets an 8.5/10 from us.

Dr Death 2021 (8 episodes)

not a really bad 1950's B movie but a very interesting dramatisation of actual events that happened in hospitals in the USA between 2012-2017. A rogue doctor (played extremely well by Joshua Jackson) is pursued by a couple of surgeons (played by Christian Slater and Alec Baldwin). Just about the most addictive thing I've watched for a while. 9.5/10.

Enjoyed Terra Nova and would have liked a second season.

I would argue that The Get Down was not a flop at all. It covered in great detail an important part of music history as well as history in general and didn't need a second season imo.

The rest pretty much never got to the UK. Thankfully we do have some 'quality control'!

^ Manimal and Terra Nova. One could see where the money went on Terra Nova, and it wasn't the script.
