"Let's agree in disagree" and "this is a subjective matter" are the biggest tools of self-righteous fools. — Shadowyzard Twieljocht
Note: I use these too, but not as "tools". So, not everyone using these phrases is a fool. I, as an atheist, use lots of "divine" words too. Myriad of vocabulary is cool. ![]() |

Let's agree to disagree on that one. I think this is a very subjective matter.

I was deliberately provocative there. "Objectively", I think it depends on what type of a "character" says such things. BTW, your reaction here was tinged by a bit of humour I think. German humour is not my thing, but you're my man! ![]() |

"We may define "faith" as a firm belief in something for which there is no evidence. Where there is evidence, no one speaks of “faith.” We do not speak of faith that two and two are four or that the earth is round. We only speak of faith when we wish to substitute emotion for evidence. The substitution of emotion for evidence is apt to lead to strife, since different groups substitute different emotions. Christians have faith in the Resurrection, communists have faith in Marx’s Theory of Value. Neither faith can be defended rationally, and each therefore is defended by propaganda and, if necessary, by war. The two are equal in this respect. If you think it immensely important that people should believe something which cannot be rationally defended, it makes no difference what the something is. Where you control the government, you teach the something to the immature minds of children and you burn or prohibit books which teach the contrary. Where you do not control the government, you will, if you are strong enough, build up armed forces with a view to conquest. All this is an inevitable consequence of any strongly held faith unless, like the Quakers, you are content to remain forever a tiny minority" (Bertrand Russell, Human Society in Ethics and Politics, 1954). ^ Very nice quote, Greg.
I always think of the quote below with my anarchy ideal; it is the ideal anarchy for me, in other words. Ideal people could form and sustain ideal anarchy. Admittedly, I don't see it coming in the next few centuries. Even this seems like an overly optimistic view to me, hahah. ""Wise people, even though all laws were abolished, would still lead the same life." - Aristophanes |

Hi, (Sorry, a bit late on this) Theater and film, specially, make use of IMPROVISATIONS ... and if there is one thing that ruins improvisations it is the use of the "mind", trying to make excuses for doing something. One exercise that I went through, just to give you an idea, was a 3 hour lab portion of a very advanced acting class. We were all in a room (20 actors and 3 directors) and we were all kids around 10! End of story. Lower the lights ... we're on! Here's the problem with "mind" ... after an hour you lose your "tricks", and "ideas" ... and start searching for something to do which makes the exercise really crazy and nuts at that hour. By the end of the 2nd hour, folks are starting to settle on a physical character, and are not concerned with words (no words in the exercise for us!) but with movements and actions. At that point, NOTHING is about your "mind" or "mental process" because in essence, it has been obliterated since none of it makes any sense! Now you are ready to try some real work, and learn how to do very difficult theater like Beckett, or Pinter, and some film materials that really show a mastery of these kinds of work like most RSC and NT folks in London, or the folks at the AF in Paris. Improvisation is about finding your CENTER ... and that can not be a mental process, since a lot of it was there and created way before your mental process and you are assuming that a mental process has control over every second of your life from the first breath! Memories maybe, but that's hardly a "mental process".

Take your fake sorry ass to somewhere else, far away from me. I'll not read the rest. If this is not nonsense, I beg somebody informs me about that. You don't have to "use" your brain consciously, for your brain/mind to function. As I said, I'll not read the rest. Edited by Shadowyzard - November 12 2021 at 13:27 |

This was from a Victorian magazine. Tit-Bits or Mirror of Life (I guess, the latter). It could be from Answers too. Late 1800s, or circa 1900.

"Perhaps you should scurry off, run to the corner store and buy yourself a clue!" - I think this is some permutation of a line written by Kevin Smith. Probably from "Chasing Amy".
