Earlier in the year I bought the entire Twilight Zone on dvd and have been having a blast with it. I am planning on getting the entire original Star Trek also (saw most if not all when I was younger). So which series do you prefer? Yes, I know they were different but I do see some overlap.

Star Trek for me...I love both but find the relentless pessimism of Twilight Zone a bit much at times.

Both are classic shows but TOS is clearly the superior show here.

I'm an old Trek fan but I give it to the Zone, a more consistently well-written and innovative show... and eight years before ST:TOS .

Equal...they both paved the way for similar shows in the future.

The thing about Trek, as I continue auditing the old series even now after almost fifty years, is that the number of mediocre to poor episodes is high, I'd say about 40%, (especially in the third season).   An argument could be made that it had run its course and NBC was right to cancel it.   Whereas the Zone has fewer bad ones and also holds up a little better as an old TV show with its stark, silvery B&W vs. Trek's technicolor papier-mâché and rushed storytelling.

That's a tough one. Love both shows. I went with Star Trek here but you could make a case for either.

Star Trek TOS remains one of the greatest TV shows ever made, in spite of its weak and mediocre episodes. It was a true collaborative effort that was just SO far ahead of and SO much better than everything else made at the time.

The Twilight Zone can definitely be called the first GREAT TV show, but from beginning to end, it revolved around just one man: Rod Serling. Starting with the 3rd season, Rod became far too busy to oversee the day-to-day operations, and the quality of the show dropped precipitously. While there were still good episodes made right up to the end, the show eventually became a shadow of its former self.

^ Perhaps, but I'd hardly call Richard Matheson, Earl Hamner, and Chuck Beaumont low quality.   The show's emphasis was on the writing itself in a dramaturgic, almost literary way, whereas ST not so much.   As far as revolving around one person, Trek was ruthlessly controlled by Gene Roddenberry with an iron first, we know that now beyond doubt.

yeah so many of the best TOS episodes were in season 1.  Certainly in that season there were few mediocre episodes - "Alternative Factor" comes to mind as one of the worst of the whole series.  It seems to me Season 2 had a generally high quality level but without the consistent magic of season 1.  Season 3 the show appeared indeed to have run its course.

Now, Gilligan's Island's season 3 was as good as 1 and 2....it should NOT have been cancelled  -Tongue
